Serenity is the film version of the TV show Firefly, which had a cult following enough in the early aughts to get a movie made, but today might have been able to use Twitter to get the show picked up by another outlet.
Regardless, it's a fine movie. Entertaining for the most part, largely derivative of the show. Shrug.

To be fair Joss Whedon said Serenity's twofold purpose was to 1) tie up all the loose ends and essentially cram all of what would've been season 2 into one 2 hour movie, a difficult feat by any measure that I think he more than succeeded at accomplishing, and 2) hoped for a hail mary pass that if it miraculously did well it might generate enough new enthusiasm to restart the tv show, albeit minus a few characters (presumably to be replaced with new ones and new adventures). I for one appreciate that the movie studios at least green-lit the idea so we all could have some closure

I got lucky enough to stumble on the serenity comic con panel when the movie was being promoted. I think I was waiting around for a BSG panel after it and after I saw them being hillarious at their panel I went and bought the entire box set, tore through it, and then was that fan begging for the movie. I am really glad to hear that you saw it and then it prompted you to go and give the show some love

I don't see how a movie could both try and get a continuation of the show, and yet wrap up the show in one move. Tbh, Whedon should've just have made one much larger firefly episode as a movie, a single well made plot, continue on the subplots from the show but not resolve them, and leave it open ended so people want more.

@@calebwilliams7659 Interesting. Though I guess I was refering more to it's theatrical release. As in, how many actually paid to see the movie in theaters without knowing anything about the show. Catching it on cable I think is a different circumstance. There were shows that I stumbled across mid series as well that caught my interest and had me going back to the begining to understand basis of the show. To be fair, I should not have used an absolute in stating the movie was only made for the show's fans. More like it was made mainly for the dedicated fans in mind. (Else it would not have been made at all.)

Did Jeremy seriously sin the movie for having the Reavers "inserted" into the story? The whole point of the movie was about discovering how the Reavers were created through very inhumane and unwilling human behavioral experiments that went wrong and then releasing the information to the public to expose how corrupt the Alliance is and, in a sense, finally avenging the Brown Coats who fought the Alliance. He initially sinned the whole plot with that single sin

I think he said the introduction of the reavers was a bit clunky, and that the movie required a lot of knowledge of the show. Which got cancelled because not a lot of people watched it....
@musicsnob08
@musicsnob08 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisrautmann8936 It averaged about 5 million viewers per episode that aired. It was not that a lot of people did not watch it, it just was not enough for fox. On many other networks it would have been a top 5 show. On fox it was near the bottom of the list and in their worst time slot. Fridays at 8. Fox was expecting about twice that number of viewers but there was no show that had been on fox that did well in that time slot. Most went to that time slot to die. Sad that Firefly started there. Firefly was meant to be aimed at young adults. Most young adults are not home on a Friday night at 8PM. Fox had already cancelled 9 shows in that slot in the previous 10 years and in 16 years after firefly was cancelled another 31 shows were cancelled in that time slot. To be honest it never had a chance with the way fox aired and promoted it. I think it only got on Fox in the first place because Gail Berman was a huge Joss Whedon fan. To put things in perspective. Buffy the Vampire slayer had about 100 episodes made but never got 5 million viewers per episode that aired like Firefly did. Buffy, when looking at total number of times that episodes aired averaged about 4.5 Million viewers per episode. Firefly was about 4.7 million. It is actually Joss Whedon's most viewed per episode show to date.

Correct. For those wondering, the hidden cut is when Mal and Simon are going downstairs on their way from the engine room to the med bay. Mal is walking ahead of Simon as he starts heading down the stairwell. Mal makes a comment and the camera whips back to Simon for his response, but there is a hidden cut in that whip pan. There is a very slight overlap of set built in the upper deck and lower deck of Serenity. The stairwell was built on both sets, allowing for the cut to be virtually seamless.

Alright so you come after my favourite movie, the movie I use as my own personal ethos when I make films - so I'm gonna come right back at you 0:24: How dare you 'zzzzz' one of the best openings executed in film - the whole opening is a masterclass on how to do exposition - Whedon manages to catch anyone who has never seen Firefly up to speed with pretty much everything *without* alienating fans of the show. That's skill. You even call it ballsy later on but then count that as a sin rather than a removal??? 1:06 - Because Fox owned the rights to the 'Firefly' trademark. 1:50 - The subtitles would take away from the natural feel of the billingualness. It's part of the appeal, and you can tell what's being said by the context. If it matters so much the specifics - that's what IMDb and fan sites are for! 2:06 - It's both consistent with Wash's humour and Whdonisms that the ship crashing is yada-yada'd. Everyone was bantering about the ship crashing, did any of them actually seem concerned (Apart from Jayne). 2:16 How is it out of character for Jayne to defy Mal? It's pretty consistent in the show how much Jayne obeys Mal and is actually a bit wary of him. And the one time he did defy Mal Mal almost killed him in one of my favourite scenes. There's even a scene Jaynestown where Jayne tries to bring a weapon with him when Mal said no and Mal shuts him down pretty brutally and Jayne doesn't take the weapon. 5:29 - Idunno, River wandering into the bar after losing Simon that the crew are in seems entirely consistent with River 7:35 - Huh ... almost as if that is thematically relevant .. .boy if only the show actually picked up on that, say for example in the episode The Train Job ... 9:24 - ... Why is that a sin???? 9:26 - When is it said she skins them? 10:26 - River would 12:04 - Why wouldn't they be able to stay ahead? Maybe they're faster? Also come on that 'oh crap' moment from the Operative was delicious. Deffo should cancel out a sin if nothing else. 13:47 - Did you miss the part where she has a panic episode and refuses to do anything? Which I will agree is plot convenient but at least it's consistent with River. 14:12 - Because he's clever

Agreed! Movies with Tudyk get sins removed...but THE movie with him in a starring role doesn't? CinemaSins sin movies for not following their own rules, they should do the same. I think after doing maths that this movie would come out to 50-75 sins. But would blow up after the wooden spike. (Ironically another Joss staple....kinda odd)

You saying that, when they mention that. The point of complaining that the movie stuffs everything into the plots, including the Reaver's, is not answered by saying that the Reaver's are part of the plot. The idea is that they could have had a different plot, focused on the alliance and river, maybe done more with books backstory instead, had the reaver and Miranda plot as a second entire story. It is extremely well written, but only well plotted.

@@FFKonoko Joss was trying to finish the story he started telling in Firefly, so at the very least, if the movie didn't do well, the fans would still have some sort of closure. @stefansamoyloff3866 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think this is an abbreviation. I've always gotten the impression that"verse" seems to stand in for known or explored space, while universe would still be used for all of space. I mean … there is a guy in this movie named Mr. Universe, yet he's the type of media cyber dude that would absolutely use an edgy, cool abbreviation of that word instead if their was one. The expression would jump from "nothing in the world" to "nothing in the 'verse" because your suggesting you can overcome anything tangible that could conceivably interact with you to stop you. You say something like "nothing in heaven and earth" when it's more metaphor and you mean NOTHING can stop you because it's destiny or something. Mal is NOT suggesting blue mind giants from deep space couldn't stop him with their magic space dust and telepathy because he's "the one", he's suggesting that he's a completely bad ass that would kick all the ass if he cared enough, because someone just called him yellow.
