#LOST Season 5, episode 14 - "The Variable" NB: SPOILERS
"The Variable" explores Daniel Faraday's return to the Island and his demise. We're gonna look briefly into his journal, but also about a storyline that got cut and was supposed to be implemented into the later part of season 5.
00:00 Intro - Daniel’s journal
02:00 Episode breakdown
04:32 The storyline that got cut
11:33 Episode breakdown
There's no island like the Island from the hit TV show "Lost" (2004-2010), with its bizarre occurences, multiple treks and exciting locations. In this series I analyze every journey taken by the characters on the show. Episode by episode. Trying to connect the dots between all those impossible maps, confusing treks and mysterious locations.

Gotta love François Chau's dedication to the role. His performance in the Comic Con video ("I'm begging you!") might be his best work for LOST. The podcast clip you dug up ties in nicely with your previous video - "We don't consider what goes on in Comic Con 'canon'. We try to make it tie into the show, but the only thing that really is canon is the show for us"... The Orchid video is a really great way to show that they knew what they were doing way ahead of time, but the season 5 video really is the other side to that. It still ends up largely fitting with what ends up on TV, but it was perhaps too specific a concept to have as a landmark to work towards. And that's fine, even though I would have liked to have seen this play out. Mostly, it makes me curious about the behind-the-scenes reasons for Faraday's absence in the second half of season 5. If there were ever any off-screen troubles involving Jeremy Davies (other than mild annoyances about the volume of his dialogue 😛), they've managed to keep that hidden very well. It's odd - he's a fan favorite and starts out as a huge driving force of the story in episodes 5x01, 5x03 and 5x05, only to disappear for most of the rest of the season. As you point out, showing his time in Ann Arbor is a huge missed oppourtunity. We don't actually get an explanation for what he's doing there. Instead, he's completely gone for five episodes (not counting the very end of "Some Like It Hoth"), then returns with completely different motivations and is killed off. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. That being said... The concept of his death is awesome.

Agree. I remember Davis had an interview at the start of season 5 where he seemed hopeful of becoming a regular, and the thin design of his character ended up being a big problem because he ended up being the biggest straw man of science in the show. "I was so busy thinking of the constants I forgot to think of the variables" - Worst 'Scientist' Ever. Let's change our timeline by blowing up a bomb rather than with time capsules exploiting the known time loop to future me or Desmond.

Big fan of this episode, and Faraday's character in general. I personally am glad the Pierre Chang thing from the comic con never became canon, it felt a bit contrived (idk if thats the right word) to me. I think the way the story naturally progressed worked way better as a tight cohesive narrative. Though i do wish we got a flashback of faraday doing his thing in michigan 😸

I'd love it, and I think it could be a plausible jumping off point, if they were ever to try and tell another story within the Lost universe, not a reboot, but a sequel series say, if they used the ComicCon video appearing 50 years into the future, and kicking off a new era of the Dharma Initiative

1:57 Handwaving that time period practically is a plot hole given Daniel had too much time and resources to test or dope the time loop in the 2000's via contacting himself or Desmond.11:35 I think this is one of the reasons fans of adventure/mystery tv shows were hopeful for the Game of Thrones adaptation, though in that case the writer let the show down by not delivering within 5 years of his promised timeline.

Stuff like the Daniel/Pierre storyline getting cut makes me wish that the latter three seasons were closer in length to the first three. It seems as we get into the later seasons, running out of time seems to be a recurring problem that leaves a number of things on the cutting room floor that probably would have benefited the show (i.e. Ilana, Charlotte, etc).

It's not a popular opinion (to say the least) but to me Lost is one if the rare shows that has always worked better in the network 20+ episodes format. Mostly because Lost is such a dense show with so many characters, so many stories to tell and layer with such rich mythology. The more slow it was, the more smooth it gets if that makes any sense 😂

You say this, but season 6 still felt like so much wasted time with temple arc, back and forth trekking on the island, flashsideways storylines that bear no weight on the overall plot (I'm not complaining about the last one, they are my favourite part of season 6).

@@marty13612 Yeah I totally agree with you there. They did not make the most economic use of the episodes they had in Season 6. But at least from a centric episode perspective, I don't see where they could cut one of the existing episodes to fit in an Illana episode or a Claire episode. So my solution is still a longer season (plus also they just write it better 😇)
