If I ever start a microbrand I'm gonna come out with a skin diver at 36mm just as a statement. I think smaller watches are sooo elegant the way they make the strap curve up to the top of your wrist and how it sits there like it was made for you and you only.

@@NAMICA.Watches Same as mine. I have a beautiful little 50's wittnauer that would probably suit you perfectly. It's 34mm with a 40mm lug to lug on 18mm straps. I swear you'll change your mind. Wearing a 34mm makes me want to go even smaller now. Like a 32 or 31mm. Also being a relatively slim dude, smaller watches make your forearms look big. Don't get me wrong I like my 38's. I have a seiko snkl23 that's perfect and an 42mm skx 009. But then again seiko case designs are really good with fitting different size wrists.

I don't think that the font is too "modern", I consider it to be period correct, kind of resembling the jugenstil/Vienna secession styles of the early teens of the 20. century. This is the first micro brand watch featured on this channel that I might actually end up buying. Still got some war time memorabilia handed down by my grandfather. Wouldn't want to show this on camera, though... Great video as always, mate!

Here's my take on the brand font. I think most vintage inspired micro brands are trying to make their watches look old when if you think about it, Old brands try to make their products look futuristic (Or at least their idea of what a futuristic thing is) So I think the font is consistent with that.

Hand wind only and closed case back, as well as a retro Vario font would make this nearly perfect. Also a true Kitchener Strap, and possibly a “shrapnel guard”, would be the cherry on top. It looks like like really good value for the money.

@@VARIOeveryday oh gosh I didn’t think the actual brand would reply to me! How cool! I spent about two hours after writing that pouring over your website, I love what you’re doing and decided I will be getting the white on white dial of this model. I totally agree about keeping the design integrity and the water resistance, I appreciate open case backs but I don’t see myself buying a watch with one for daily wear with my job and lifestyle.. Good design choice I appreciate it and everything else you’re doing. I’d like to buy some of those bund straps separately as well and hope you’ll add it to your already diverse variety of straps available. Also: I love your brand name font! I don’t get what everyone’s problem is, it totally has a retro/vintage feel to me and I appreciate that, as a simple sans serif font with the older letter proportions, it seems to be quite versatile if you want it to be. I think it would look good on just about any watch going for a vintage look.. can’t say that about another brand off the top of my head. The V looks like watch hands and I love it. Very interested to see what you will be putting out in the future!!

@@ShacharHomaYona That's the beauty of microbrands. I think it works both ways. Brand owners are happy to chat about watches with enthusiasts.. at least I do. We send out surveys to customers during our design process to make sure we're making what customers want. However I did insist on the wired lugs when survey told me more wanted faux but I wanted to capture the spirit of the trench even closer and went against the wishes of the majority.

@@VARIOeveryday made my week tbh. I am so glad you went with the wired lugs!! It’s my favorite thing about the case and probably sold me on the watch, tbh. Sometimes designers know best! I think that it will serve to be a good choice both for durability/period integrity and certainly for defining your brand. I haven’t seen a modern trench watch either a homage type or inspired type of design that had wired lugs, I’ve only seen those on true old antique models. (I could be wrong and may have just not seen any)

I did a survey with a cursive font and the modern Vario font both getting equal votes and I felt as a vintage inspired watch, it would juxtapose quite well, since we moved the crown to 4pm, upgraded the water resistance...etc quite a few points that makes this watch more modern.

I’m coincidentally wearing an original 1912 trench watch right now. This Vario watch is very ok. It looks like a million other WW1 trench watches that were sold for about a dollar. I have a few with blued hands and others with radium hands. It looks fine. It’s far from an original, or new, design. During and after WW1 it wouldn’t have garnered a second glance but that’s probably the point. If so then it’s well done! The font is about right. That V isn’t far from some Art Moderne and Art Deco style fonts. It’s not perfect but it’s OK. It’s definitely not ultra modern but I’m not sure the designers were to interested in that as the V is seemingly made from two interred watch hands. More of a logo really. It’s a big step above my period pieces in terms of technology. That’s nice. The price? That’s a big step up too, probably a fair one. I was enjoying this quiet niche in the watch collecting world by the way. Just had to invite everyone to the party didn’t you Mr J? Anyway. If I wasn’t in the market for other things I’d probably start saving my pennies. The only problem with 100 year old watches is they tend to break and they’re not always easy to fix. Makes a person feel bad.

Thatd be cool to see that original watch, very cool. Yeah the font for the brand name was about a 50/50 split between that and a cursive font on a survey they did. I personally cant wait for preorders in November. Have another of their watches the Empire and for the price they make great pieces, and you are right, it can be a quiet niche.
@JasonBarnhart
@JasonBarnhart 3 жыл бұрын
@@cameronaitkens5317 The originals are understandably beat up for the most part unless you spend a lot and after a century most of the radium glow is gone. It was offered as a service anyway and I like now, I don’t think watches were being issued to soldiers. Just another thing to spend your walking around money on at the base exchange or cluster of shops outside every gate of every military installation ever. The Vario is a good watch. I’m sure a soldier of the era would have preferred it over most options. The 4:00 crown is interesting. I’ve never seen an original trench watch like that. There are however, many with missing crowns! The font is probably more appropriate than cursive. It’s just the V watch hand logo that’s throwing people off. Vario did a good job and I’m sure the mainstream will discover the style again at some point. Hopefully they won’t be interested in beat up old watches with no water resistance and questionable reliability. They’ve made a well thought out watch that’s technically superior to most of the watches it looks like. It’s a fair price too. It’ll be on my “one of these days list.”

I just bought a CYMA WWI trench watch, and it looks very similar to this Vario watch. However, mine is a bit smaller at 33mm and the lug width for holding the strap is 11mm, but it looks bigger when put on a bund strap. Mine also has a brass shrapnel guard, and I think Vario is really missing an opportunity for not including this as an option. I'd love having the same style as my vintage piece but in a bigger, automatic, and hacking version.

Firstly, there needs to be a hand winding model. Secondly, a "shrapnel guard" would be nice.

@@VARIOeveryday I'm surprised. I actually just bought a vintage WWI watch with the shrapnel guard, and I bought it specifically because it had the guard. You can also do a search on ebay for watch with and without the guard and see that the ones with the guard sell for significantly more. Lastly, lrfantiquewatches.com specializes in selling restored pieces, and I've noticed he gets quite a bit more for the ones that have shrapnel guards. It's one of the things that sets the watch apart from other watches. Personally, I like the brass shrapnel guards, which is what I bought. It's a really cool watch. There's also nothing stopping you from selling the guard as an option.

I love this watch. I wore a hand wind chronometer in the Army and quickly realized a digital quartz was more durable, I could illuminate the time, and I could lose it without guilt. But I still have that chronometer, a LeJour.

That's a really well done watch at a fair price for a change. I don't object to the font for their name. I like that the distinctive 'V' is also engraved on the crown (pretty deeply it looks like). The hands and dial are great. I love the sort of stained glass pattern on the hour and minute hands. I generally don't care that much about lume, but that is really nicely done. I even like the Bund strap. It looks to be of good quality and replacements in case you wanted more than one color (which you might), are very reasonably priced. Regarding the case back, It doesn't appear that a display back is an option on the production watches. Given the type of watch this is paying homage to, I can't fault that since I'm sure trench watches didn't have display back. It's a fairly plain movement anyway and trying to see it if you had the Bund strap would be difficult anyway.

It's a fine attempt at a 1920s watch IMHO. The maligned brand font looks good in my opinion. It's got the art deco / futurist style and doesn't look out of place at all. I have a couple of inherited wrist watches from the 20's with similar modernist fonts - it's how they really did design things in those days and is perfectly in character with the appearance of a watch of 100 years ago.

Jory not everyone is going to be looking at their watch through a macro lens and it's also a preproduction prototype and usually the small imperfections are addressed when the watch goes into full production. Overall I think that it's a really nice retro style watch harking back to the time attitudes were changing towards wrist watches, I will agree with you about the font for the company name, it would have been better if they didn't have a company name on the dial. I say this for a good reason, if you look back at the watches that were converted to a wrist watch and the ones produced from scratch as wrist watches during and around the time of the first World War you will see that a lot of the wrist watches from around that time, not many had the name of the watch company on the dial and it just makes for a cleaner asthetic. Also the enamel dial is really nice and an uncluttered dial would allow you to appreciate it more with a clear view.

You are right. Most trenches don't bear a maker's mark on the dial. It was a marketing decision on my part. When customers take a photo of their Vario trench and put it on IG, others would instantly see the logo and know what to google to find the watch.

When I started I had wanted a handwound to be period correct but Japanese don't offer small seconds handwound so either I go Swiss or Chinese but as a young microbrand, I prefer Japanese for a dependent cost effective movement.

Great looking watch, wish they would go Swiss though (maybe and STP2-12-12m?) but I guess you gotta save where you can. In terms of the logo, I agree it doesn't work on this watch so well. It was great on the brands first model as the whole thing was based around the bauhaus aesthetic, it just doesn't work here. It was also one of my hang ups on their last watch, the Empire.

Check out the Brussels Atomium sculpture - 1950s (compare to Vario logo). So I think Vario can be proud that their logo fits a general 20th century aesthetic, and especially the Empire Art Deco theme.

@The Time Teller - hey Jory ! I enjoyed the review. But if you'll please allow me. You did miss one thing about the watch, that has an important historical reference. On the back is the Date of the End of "the Great War" or "the World War" - "Armistice Day". We Americans celebrate that, as "Veteran's Day" - "On the Eleventh Hour, of the Eleventh Day, of the Eleventh Month ... " - '11 - 11 - 1918'. thank you.

Nice. But the automatic movement was not invented until the late 1920s and as a previous commenter said a hand winding watch would have been thinner.

Good replica of a ww1 watch and I love it. The brand name font is okay, similar to the Oris Siro which had the same sub second dial hand. The serif font on the numbers is identical. What would I change, perhaps the colour of the strap.

I quite like it, I think the price sounds pretty fair. Is it actually an enamel dial? At that price I would have thought it would be a lacquered dial. Actually I think I would enjoy a video on the differnce between enamel and lacquered dials and if the price differnce is worth it. Do love the content BTW.
