Today we have something rather interesting from Vario. Vario is known for making some great straps, but every once in a while they release their own watch. This time they have come out with a WWI Trench watch Homage. In a classicly sized 37mm case powered by an Automatic Miyota 82s5.

Is the bundstrap going to be longer when the watch is launched?

@@michaelbedford8017 unfortunately they are made already. The thing is I assumed most would not wear it with the bund after some time hence I didnt make the 2 piece strap longer. I might make the 40mm strap slightly longer with this experience.

Good review, Shane. I was glad you mentioned the size limitation of the strap. I saw this on another channel and went to Vario's site. They had a disclaimer of sorts, in regards to the size of wrist this watch would fit. In my opinion; as it is being marketed; it will ONLY fit a person of smaller wrist size. I have forgotten what Vario listed, but; they did have an exact figure as to whom it would fit. I think it would be prudent for anyone considering this watch to see if it will work for them as the strap is part of the aesthetic of this particular piece.

Nice! A friend of mine stated an interest in picking up a WWI trench watch, but I think he was thinking more vintage, but I think this (or the Timex Midget someone else mentioned) would be right up his alley! It would certainly go well with his Hotchkiss 1914 and Chauchat.

I have a Vario Trench 40mm diam. Silver-color with white, enamel dial and yellow indices. It shipped fast to Texas. I really love it. The only nick-pick I have is that I wish Ivan had a model with the crown at the 3, like the real Trench WWI 1918 watches used to be, which you can find on eBay for a good price (the ones that actually work, that is).

Great lume demonstration. There's another reviewer that shines a bright light on it, then covers it with hand, and says, "yep, lume works good". I wonder if Vario has improved the lume issue since then.

Great looking watch. Timex does do a trench watch, the Timex Midget. It's a remake of the original Ingersoll, with Indiglo! It's quartz though, so you get the look without the guts. Love mine though.

I mentioned it at the end just briefly. Although I'm not sure if they are making it anymore. Can't find it or the Welton on Timex's site. Yet found a few on Amazon still. Also not sure what the difference between the midget and the Welton is. They look about the same.

I think the Midget was Japan Limited Edition. It has the arched Timex logo above Midget. The Welton, I believe, is the subsequent US release. I bought the black dial version Midget. Welton is available at Timex.

The Timex Midget was a JDM only limited release. I have a couple WW1 era Ingersoll Midgets. They did a good job if you can find them. Many Ingersoll Midgets have no lume at all. Adding radium to the dial was a special service. Not sure if it was factory or aftermarket but it was not standard. One of mine has radium hands. I’m certain the radium is still plenty active with a half life of 1600 years but the phosphorescent zinc sulfide that does the glowing when exposed to radium has seen better days. The Timex would look great with a C3 lume job. You could in theory apply more zinc sulfide paint and it “should” glow again but short of some hard to get DOE rad nuc training or graduate level nuclear physics education you’d be better off leaving it be. The radium girl thing blew some of the danger out of proportion because they had ZERO safety protocols. Basic rules like, don’t put nuclear materials in your mouth and don’t paint your nails with radioactive paint, would have solved more than a few problems. The Timex Welton is nearly identical to the Timex Midget, is cheaper and an infrequent but not limited release. Some day I’ll save my pennies and find someone to add tritium to a trench watch! United States WW1 service trousers do have a watch pocket but it’s a hassle to use. The opening is parallel and next to the bottom edge of your belt and maybe six inches or so up under the hem of your tunic. So yes, plenty of fumbling!

I remember as a kid the Bund strap was very popular but they had a leather top / cover so you could protect the watch at all times. Very common with farmers and Graziers.

Damn Shane, i had to stop the video twice to realise where the f@ck this funky music was coming from...😎 Combined with this WW1 watch was really not making any sense in my mind... but groove is in the heart, right? And Vario hits straight in there, all products are at least unique, like'em or not, i'd say is true. Empire watch is top IMO, this'll be another home run for sure and you're right about the weird logo, still it's so ...alien looking ( the dots on V are amazing!), it makes sense at the end! Another good review mate. Btw knowing you a bit - and your ability to combine straps on weird looking watches - get the grey one. You will jump on it, won't ya???? lol

So, i just pledged a Trench watch White/Orange, because this watch is near perfect aesthetically. Love the ceramic white and radium color Lume (though I wish it had more lume). I'd love to see 2.0 have some functionality changes. A Swiss Movement (WWI was mostly Europe), a 45mm case without not changing the fantastic ratios, 30 ATM, a date option, and an opening lug. DON'T CHANGE THE ASTHETICS! It's Beautiful!

Hi Shane, this watch is a winner as far as I'm concerned for a field watch. Appropriate vintage design wthout the 40+mm sizing. 100m screwdown crown. The price is very attractive. A bundstrap is great. An added bonus is that I can use it with all my vintage 18mm watches that are 34/35mm plus crown that need a size boost. Do you know how much they are charging for the strap alone? Altogether a great alternative to going down the Rolex oyster clone route. Great review; everything I needed to know.

Unfortunately, I didn't get in on the kickstarter, but I'm still very excited to get this watch. I opted for the brass version so I'll develop a nice patina, for that extra vintage look.

By the way this is the only enamel dial watch at reasonable price in the market, afaik. Which is the main reason I'm really tempted, though I'm a bit scared it may look too vintage for everyday wear.

What a shame, but I'm passing on this piece, personally. Can't get over the 'V'. It absolutely disrupts the entire aesthetic, which is the only reason I'd be interested in a Trench Watch. I bought the Timex Welton, which is a nice Trench Watch inspired piece. Domed sapphire with indiglo. The text for Timex was clean sans serif, so it didn't take away much from the look. I did sell it eventually, as my collection became more "mechanical" centric.

It should be 40mm and the 4.15 crown is not a good idea. Also, I would have used an ETA 2895 movement in top grade - yes it would have increased the price by $200 but I would have paid it.

The Vario Empire was a gorgeous watch that seems to be very well made. I'm sure this one is also. However not being over keen on numerals on the dial, or small seconds, this one was never going to be on my list. But for those who do get it, I'm sure they will love it

It's very nice, but the red 12 and it being on Kickstarter is a little bit of a turn off Also, isn't white lume not the same as C3? I thought it would be C1 perhaps, and that's why is doesn't come close to the other watches in the lume test.

I would have liked them to have placed the crown at 12 o’clock position for authenticity’s sake, as the first trench watches were pocket watches with lugs added for a wrist strap. They were cockeyed on the wrist too, because of this.

I was thinking about that too. Although I wonder if there is a movement they could of used for that. When I looked up this movement I thought it was interesting as it was listed as a partially skeletonized version used in open-heart watches. miyotamovement.com/product/82S5/ Kind of an odd configuration with the open heart and the lower left and small seconds at the lower right. But I think they used it so they could rotate it just enough to get the small seconds at the 6 and keep the crown in the lower right.

I think it will be close... Actually just checked their site. Found this:" Please note bund is suitable for up to a 7.2 inch wrist (fits 7.5 inch for those who wear it tight) and up to 7.5 inch wrist without the bund. Folks with bigger wrist should choose the single pass leather straps which pairs well with the bund."

I like Vario as a company and they are doing something different than the usual one-trick dive watch. The watches them selves are nice, in keeping with the period they represent. You've probably picked the least attractive colour variant to my eye.

Do you mean the movement? I think they all are, but if it matters to you. It's best to contact Vario Directly and ask what they are currently doing. If I remember right, the watches come with a black closed case back, so you can't see it anyway. Unless you opt for the optional exhibition version. But again, best to ask them directly what the are currently doing.

It looks similar, but the specs on the Timex fall flat compared to this Vario big time. Still, for an occasional wear, the Timex is great.

Very cool design that harkens back to a time not often discussed in this hobby. I really enjoy the look and think it’s very well done and I’d even say that I’d like to own one. BUT I know that I would never wear it and it would just sit there in my box looking nice but collecting dust.

I'm definitely picking this watch up. I'm going with the grey dial. Your review fully sold me on it though :) would you say there are any advantages to an enamel dial, or is it just kind of neat?

Enamel dials are never seen on watches in this price point. The next cheapest one I can think of is the seiko presage enamel watches and those cost $1000, followed by AnOrdain ($1500). Other than that its only on HH watches (patek and the like). Even for chinese brands (seagull) enamel is for their luxury models ($2500~). Its a very pleasant surprise.

I like how Shane sometimes sneaks in random watches in cameo appearances. 11:03; the Orion Hellcat discretely finds its way on stage with nary a mention. How do you like the bracelet on it? The rest of the watch? Seems a little overpriced for what you get, but nice still.

I always like to throw some upcoming cameos in. Although I'm surprised no one has mentioned the other one near the beginning. Only had it a week, and waited just over a year to get it. Love the look and it's growing on me every day. You definitely aren't getting a massive bang for your buck with this one. Although the quality is probably on the level of Nodus and NTH, which all charge about the same for a watch with a 9015. So I think a lot of what you are paying for is the extra attention to details that Nick does with his designs and before he ships it out. As for the bracelet, it's a love/ hate relationship right now. Great quality, absolutely love the feel on the wrist and the design. Yet one of the hardest I've ever had to resize and can be a pain to put back on the watch. Pin and collar bracelets can always be a pain, but this was one of the worst. Also, if the end link and the first link of the bracelet aren't perfectly lined up the spring bar seems to get stuck on one side of the link and cant move freely. So you can't put it on the watch unless it's completely flat. Not sure that made sense, but the best way I can describe it.

Those are all great field watches. Can you think of any that have the Trench Watch style. Specifically with a small seconds? That's what I was having a hard time thinking of.

@@RelativeTime Steinhart 42 Military handwind is with small seconds. But not many. I would rather have regular seconds but with better movement. I think choosing that Miyota defined it was going to be with small seconds. www.steinhartwatches.de/en/weitere-modelle/military-42.html

@@pierresangeorg2286 I know folks liked Miyota 9 series but I had wanted to capture the trench with small seconds. It was either Miyota or Epson for Japanese.

@@VARIOeveryday You are the boss, decision is yours. I can speak from my perspective. When I'm buying a watch I decide between 10 watches that are my narrow selection and I'm going for best specs and design. For example, Venturo Field 2 has one of most beautiful cases and dials but for me to buy it it has to have something extra regarding the movement. And it doesn't, I already have bunch of NH35.

@@RelativeTime The Oris 1917 is the most direct comparison to this watch for me. Doesn’t have the small seconds but other than that, it’s practically identical.

The fact that the watch takes 18mm NATO straps, not 20 or 22's is a bit of a bummer...

22 would probably be too big for a watch of this size. Although I think the 40mm version will have 20mm lug width.

The SNZGs are great. I'm actually surprised they haven't gone up more in price. The SNKs used to be $60, but are now closer to $120 in some cases.

I think Vario deserves a lot of credit for not making another diver. Nothing wrong with divers, but the market is a bit saturated.

@tkowalczuk right I get that but just cause it was done before does not mean the design cannot be improved by correcting the flaws instead just being a true reproduction.

@@josephj7387 It's due to movement restrictions. If we get to our stretch goal, we will be making a 40mm brass version which I'll try to avoid cropping out the 6.
