60 years ago, on October 1st 1962, NBC Television Network presented the very first show of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He began his 30-year old journey as king of late night television until 1992 when he decided to retire. I wasn't born yet when he presented, but I have seen clips of him, and I admire his talent!!!! Ever since then, I always considered him as one of the greatest examples in the world of entertainment and the area of communication. Wherever you are, I want to praise you for your great contributions you made in the television industry. There are so many late night TV hosts that are extremely amazing, but none of them can ever match Johnny Carson. Johnny, I salute you!!!! #johnnycarson #thetonightshow #kingoflatenight #nbc 📺📽️🎙️

Steve Allen, Jack Paar and Johnny Carson were Late Night titans. We’ll never see the likes of them again.

Even with Tonight Shows of the 1960's being routinely junked, you'd think they might have bothered at least preserving Johnny's pilot episode!

Yes, very disappointing that it can't be watched. If you haven't, you should watch American Masters: Johnny Carson - The King of Late Night. It's a nearly two-hour look at Johnny's life and career. I recently watched it here on youtube. Really interesting.

Networks and movie studios have been notoriously oblivious to the artistic and cultural importance of the product they help create ...... (in addition to being just plain cheap). Preserving tapes, film, etc. costs money ... and most of the time these 'geniuses of business' could not imagine there was any value in saving such old shows. Sooooo much has been lost! All of Steve Allen's Tonight Show (he was first) were burned to make room in a warehouse ... and unfortunately Carson's first ten years are gone due to lack of foresight. Thank God for collectors the world over. Many more films and TV shows would be lost without them.

That is correct, it was the television network business at the time. They all did it. @@jfuzz9083

My parents never saw Johnny. It wasn't until I was in junior high in the late 60s and had a TV in my room that I tuned in to see what the Tonight Show was about. After that, many was the night I would stay up late, lying in bed, and muffling my laughter into my pillow. Thanks, Johnny.

You had a TV in your room in the 1960s while you were still in grade school?

@@partyguy101ify He said junior high, not grade school. At that time junior high was grades 7, 8 & 9.

Back then lots of shows that would be considered classic were routinely erased, no one envisioned a time of VCR or DVD or streaming online on a phone or laptop, there wasn't even any cable TV or satellite, they even erased the tonight show with Lennon and McCartney as guests. That's why you hardly see any tonight shows from when Johnny was young and still had dark hair. Most of the tonight archive starts with the 70s, when Johnny's hair already turned white. Much lost, but still lots that survived. Once in a while a new old gem is recovered. And its rediscovered on KZfaq. That's life...

Since Tony Bennett's recent passing, Mel Brooks is the only survivor from that first broadcast.

I'm fairly certain that the intro (specifically the audio) is a recreation. Possibly made in the 70s, around the time Johnny's contract was up, for use on his final episode.
