I have a 2023 5th gen and am perfectly satisfied with the 5-speed and the current power plant. My 4Runner is super spunky and responsive and I've never understood the criticism of either this transmission or the 4 liter. Okay. It's not a sports car but it has more than adequate power in my opinion and is very well behaved in almost every situation I run into. It's granted, not the best four-wheeler in the world, but it's a damned good one. That combined with decent road manners all around equals the best vehicle I've ever owned. I've really grown to love my 5th gen and have no plans on moving on to the new one.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the 6th Gen in person when the opportunity arises. Seeing the 4Runner evolve into the current times is exciting but I understand how special the 5th Gen is due to its old school character. After all, that’s why I have the 5th Gen 😁 Despite the vast improvements the 6th Gen has, it still has massive shoes to fill. My biggest praise is the fact that it’ll still be built in Tahara and will be built with “The Toyota Way” in mind. I’m confident that the 6th Gen will thrive effortlessly.

As a long time 4runner owner (2013 salsa pearl trail) and as everyone on here as well,, GAS mileage was not a concern. No complaints on the 4.0 or the 5 speed transmission, both highly reliable. The Tundra/Sequoia gas mileage didnt improve much with the v6 turbo. Just saw the Car Care Nut video on new hybrid turbos(for the trucks), these engines are not for efficiency but more for power. The Trail Hunter looks cool and has a lot of features(air compressor, old man EMU, that inverter, rock rails)that a lot of 4Runner owners add. I would miss the manual transfer case.

Thanks for the hard work in putting this out!!! I know how much anticipation the new gen 4Runner has generated. I currently own a 2023 4Runner TRD ORP and 2024 Rav 4 with the 4 cylinder motor of which I am a big fan. In regard to the new 6th Gen 4Runner the turbo and/or hybrid drivetrain IS a dealbreaker to me. I'd much rather it come with a 4 cyl non turbo model or the former 6 cyl but neither is available. I love the 4 cyl non turbo version in the RAV 4 that I own. YOU are an excellent and truthful videographer but in the background you do have a built in conflict of interest being that you are a Toyota employee so you can't help but be a bit biased-it's only natural. NO turbos for me though-period. Reliability will go down as turbos trash out.

KZfaqrs were not impressed when Korean manufacturers came out with turbo charged hybrids pared to a regular transmission. They had doubts about reliability, and concerns with added maintenance since it continued to use an alternator, starter, and 12 volt battery. But now has Toyota followed suit with the hybridmax. Also the 4Runner’s body has lots of creases, ridges, and folds giving it a super aggressive look. This also reminds me of Hyundai Tucson. But I’ll wait and see how it goes.

Totally agree about the sun roof. My wife hates slick seats and I wanted all the head room I could get. We purchased our 2023 “plain” Off Road non premium for those reasons. Our other car we’ve had for 20 years has a sunroof and I’ve used it maybe 5 times. I’m concerned about those tumble seats as well. I’m 6’2” and remove the seat bottoms pretty regularly to get max stretch out mattress length. I even switched out the bolts to Allen head bolts to make it more convenient.
@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage 2 ай бұрын
Yeah at 6’2” I wouldn’t bother with sunroof either. This new 6th Gen seems smaller inside, all the reviews don’t point it out, but when someone sits in the back seat you can clearly see how much room that sunroof is robbing in the ceiling. 👎🏻

So, something I have seen and heard about that cause me to think I made the right choice in getting the last of the 5th gen 4Runners ('23 Limited). I have heard and seen on KZfaq that some '22 Tacoma's are having spun bearing issues at less than 50k miles on this new engine. My thought on all of these new turbo 4bangers is this, Toyota engines have for the most part been over built and under stressed and I think that is why they have lasted so long. If you are pushing a 2.4L 4 cylinder to make as much or more power than a 4L V6 is not good for reliability. When people start treating this high performance engine like a normal low stressed big V6 with 10K oil changes using 0W-20 or 0W-16 oil, I believe that they will start dropping like flies around the 75 to 100k mile mark. So, no high strung turbo motor for me thanks. I don't care if it's a Toyota or not, they have made poor decisions on engine design in the past (low tension rings) that turned out to be a huge mess. Guess we'll see in few years.

I'm liking the new Trailhunter color and the 2-tone interior, wish they would think about doing that for say a SR5 Premium package.... Also, my understanding of the difference between a sun roof and a moon roof..... A sun roof is when there is just the panel that you can open at anytime, it's usually glass that is never blocked so you can always see through the glass. A moon roof slides into the roof or has 2 layers, so that the sun can be blocked by a shade. I'm not 100% but that's my understanding. 😁

We bought our 2022 T4R Offroad Premium in December of 2021. Paid MSRP of $46294. Just curious I did a build and price last night for a 2024 exactly the same options and accessories. $4995 more two years later. So going by that the new TRD Pro will probably cost mid sixties. It is kind of neat looking, but there are a few things I don't like. A sixty thousand vehicle with a prop rod for the hood! Really? Second and foremost the electric motor and the battery would be a deal breaker for us. We are completely happy with our antiquated V6 and 5speed. Rock solid reliability. Heck,, if our 2007 FJ Cruiser with 168000miles wouldn't have had the frame rust out and not pass Pa. State inspection we'd still be driving it today. In fact, rust or not we still got $11500.00 trade in for a fifteen year old vehicle!!! We undercoated the T4R with one and done Value Gard undercoating so that won't happen again. Learned about that right here. Thanks Viking Garage! Anyway, we'll just keep our dinosaur for the next fifteen years or more just like the FJ.

The Trailrunner has some great features, but I believe it only comes as a hybrid. I'd love some of the features (aux switches, built in air pump) but most of the rest aren't a big deal and even if they were you can completely keep that hybrid crap. The new look is great, they did a nice job with design. I too don't like the stupid sun/moon roof which my truck has, didn't have a lot of choice as it took months to get anything when I bought it and I was luck to get this one. Also not a fan of the black-outs. I like that people have that option with the Gen 5, many like it and should be able to black them out. But I like the chrome look, and want it on my 4Runner. Overall, it's a meh of a release. Something about the front end isn't quite balanced, not sure exactly what but it's off. The door handles do not align (rear door is higher) which breaks up the overall lines of the 4runner. Gas mileage isn't going to change much, probably a couple of miles difference at the most. The turbo 4 will work harder for towing. The seats not laying down flat becomes a big issue with car camping and hauling things. The angle wasn't small either from the looks of it which means it's going to be a PITA. The rear passenger room looks like it shrunk, less legroom overall. Of the things I would change with my 5th Gen, not going to run out to grab a 6th Gen.

With proper maintenance I would say at least 200k. But we don’t have any proof of this. Soon as I dig up more information, I’ll share it with the rest.

@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage 2 ай бұрын
Exactly, oil change will need to be religiously or $$$. Ask me how I know: Our dealership shares the shop with Mazda also. When a Mazda comes in a flat bad with a bad engine, 9 out of 10 times… it’s a turbo engine. 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@morfdqdon’t drive for short periods and shut the car off without it being properly warmed up, and conversely don’t race the car and immediately shut it off, or you’ll cook the oil in the turbo.

4 cylinder turbo sums it up. What a joke. Looking to “renew” my 2015 4Runner with a 2024 4Runner if I can get my hands on one.

@@VikingsGarage idk, the hybrid option it interesting on paper anyway. Biggest complaint on 5th gen is mpg's.... Well, and perhaps power output.... The new powertrain on paper makes significant improvements to both. However, livability? Added weight and space loss, plus additional maintenance/complexity questions arise. One of the best parts of 5th gen is just bullet proof reliability and really simplicity make it fun and easy to maintain.

The black or piano black flares are a no no. Grill has a lot of shine too. Honda Pilot like. The "not" flat flat cargo area makes me like my 2022 even more. Some cool colors on the new one. For the price, save another year and get a Land Cruiser!

Yeah, that Land Cruiser is also 4 inches taller. Seems like a much better buy and does look very nice. (The intrusion of that battery in the back is a huge NO NO ) 👎🏻

Does electric work in 4-wheel drive?

a hybrid’s electric motor can also provide benefits in off-road driving because of its ability to produce additional power, so the answer is YES!!

It will probably be reliable....for a turbo 4 banger. No way in hell it will be as long lasting as a 1GR. Of course we will still be without a manual transmission, which is lame, but what can ya do? People are lazy morons. The body style definitely looks.....current.... Other than the obnoxious infotainment center which so many idiots seem to love, the interior actually looks pretty cool. Ah, I feel better now.

@@VikingsGarage Right. Would it even be possible to swap a manual to a 5th gen from a FJ cruiser? I only ask because the engines are both 1GR-FEs. I totally understand if you think it's a dumb question, but I gotz to know!

Time will tell if the interior will hold up, be squeak free. From the videos I've seen, the cargo area doesn't look any better than gen5. The width of the wheel wells still look narrow, so more suspension work to fit fat tires. Roof rack still looks useless. Let's see if the front clip doesn't pop out (like gen5), and if they solved rubbing issues on the rear hatch bezel...rust. They probably still use water based paint, so scratches are annoyingly easy. Will it be easier to work on yourself.... I'm sure you'll let us know. Lots of woman drive 5th gen Limiteds where I am. This doesn't look like a truck a girl would drive, but we'll see. Maybe the design will grow on me, but for now it's a pass.
