The Waltons had many recurring characters - The Baldwin Sisters were two of the most fun. They made "the recipe" and Miss Emily spoke frequently about her lost love Ashley Longworth. So it seemed only fitting to also share memories of working with Jonathan Frakes as Ashley Longworth Jr.
Helen Kleeb (Miss Mamie) and Mary Jackson (Miss Emily) were two of my favorite recurring actresses and watching their interaction with Will Geer, Ellen Corby, Michael Learned, Ralph Waite and Richard Thomas made for great television and memorable moments during filming.
I've been asked a lot about these two wonderful characters - hope you enjoy!

That is true Jim but I would take it a step farther and that all other characters on the show made it a community of wonderful citizens who cared about each other, looked out for each other and willing to help out when there was a need. Walton's Mountian was truly a great community!

She was always mean to him. It was always you old fool and a shove. I did not like grandmas character, she was an ugly wife who was never kind to Zeb. So judgemental about everyone and everything. Zeb would be in a good mood and she wouldn't like it at all. Even in the Season 7 opener where it's looking back at grandpas death, they show flashbacks of them and I'm not sure if they never had a tender moment, but the flashbacks were even of her being mean to Zeb and pushing him away when he grabbed her leg a few times and called him some mean words while he was trying to be romantic.

I once wrote on my Fb page that the funniest line I ever heard in a drama series came from Miss Mamie and Miss Emily. Hearing a creeping noise coming from the outside door to the recipe room and frightened, Miss Emily said, "Sister, do you think that could be Papa's spirit.?" Always the logical one, Miss Mamie replied, "Oh, no Sister. Papa always used the front door." Miss Emily and Miss Mamie came straight out of those Southern gothic short stories by William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, and Flannery O'Conner. I loved them. Still do.

In fall of 1979 my college roommate and I were working in a family restaurant and we' were informed by the manager that we needed to come in costume for Halloween. We didn't want to do ghosts or wizards or whatever so we were kind of stumped. Then we came up with dressing up as the Baldwin sisters. I am taller with black hair while my roommate was a short blond. We were recognized for what we hoped instantly. And the manager put us serving the drinks to every table instead of our assigned few. It was unbelievable how many people asked us for the "recipe". Fun times. And we won the costume contest by the way.

My brother and I not knowing what the recipe was because we were kids used to pretend we were drinking it. 😂 Our recipe was iced tea, and whenever one of us went to the fridge to get some iced tea we would say "Recipe Sista?" I have so many fond memories of the show, and my brother and I enjoyed reruns right up until he died of sudden heart failure. It speaks to the character and the professionalism of the actresses - Ms. Kleeb and Ms. Jackson in regards to how much rehearsing they did and back story on their own time and in their own manor. Pure time tested stagecraft no doubt learned over years in their profession so that when the cameras rolled they could relax in character and work on performance. Clearly by sharing your fond memories of these two jewels in the series' crown, the Baldwin sisters and their portrayers - were as much a gift to the cast as The Waltons was a gift to its audience. And remains so... The gift that keeps on giving...nearly 49 years later. Blessings to you Ms. Norton for sharing so much with us this year. I always have such a smile on my face hearing about your experiences.

The Waltons was one of my favorite television shows as a kid. Every Thursday night, sponsored by Tide laundry detergent, if I recall correctly. My mother also loved the show because it reminded her of her own childhood growing up in the 30's and 40's. I've recently become reacquainted with the show, thanks to the re-runs and while it was only a television show, I feel like all the characters were all part of my own family. I can relate to so many of them and especially The Baldwin Sisters. There's a fussy old lady I know who is still alive and is the walking, talking epitome of Miss Mamie. I'm pretty sure she has some Mason jars full of "recipe" in her basement. Thank you for posting your memories of the show. Please keep them coming.

One of the series' most poignant moments was when Miss Emily fessed(after getting shaken up seeing Erin and Ashley Longworth, Jr. smooching ) that she actually HAD known that Ashley Jr. was NOT his father (the beau of her youth) but had deliberately pretended that the son was the father because she knew that Ashley, Jr. was there to bring sad tidings about his father. In fact, the senior Mr. Longworth had died but had tasked his son to give the news to Miss Emily- along with a final letter for her eyes only. Of course, it was a good testament to the Baldwin Sisters' characters that the Recipe just made them giddier and goofier than when sober but NEVER mean or bitter (unlike with Corabeth). I know it's late on my part but thanks for this!

As "Little House" had Katherine McGregor as the fiesty, cantankerous and odd-centric Mrs. Oleson, "The Walton's" had the quiet, sophisticated eccentricity of the Baldwin sisters. Expertly portrayed by Mary and Helen, the sisters longed tor times past and continually searched for social advancement in a locale where there was none to be had. The "recipe" was the central element in their storyline, but I believe it was the versatility and professionalism of these two fine actresses that writers and directors dared to sidestory them - with immense success at that! Just as Michael Landon and Karen Grassle as Charles and Caroline - in onscreen "private moments" - enjoyed light gossip and a laugh at Mrs. Oleson's expense, I have to wonder if John and Olivia didn't experience a similar "in the dark" moment musing about the antics of the Baldwins! Great segment as always, Judy! Thank you!

Thanks Judy!!! I adored those characters....Ashley, he kissed her under the tree. Oh, poor Miss Emily!!! They were superb actors in their respective roles. I just love how they didn't know they were making moonshine, albeit high quality!!! One of my favourite episodes, two part is The Wedding. Yeah, hot and heavy with Curtis. He was the perfect guy for Mary-Ellen. David was too 'normal'. 'Young' Mary-Ellen was so fiery and opinionated and needed a guy like Curtis Willard to spark that electricity. Great casting and acting in that episode!! Any special memories of working with Tom Bower? " dear sweet gentle Mary-Ellen". "I wouldn't marry you Curtis Willard if you were the last man on earth! My Grandfather was in his 70's when he fathered his only two children, my mother and uncle. He was a doctor and my Grandmother still called him The Doctor until the day she passed on. She loved him so much and he wanted children terribly. She was in her very early 40's which was unheard of in those days. He passed when my mother was 9 and luckily my Grandmother taught the piano and made a living with that well into her late 70's. I had several Great, great Aunts and my sister and I had the most beautiful clothes to play dress-up with. The Baldwin Sisters wardrobe always reminded me of the clothes we played in and those hats they were wearing in this photo were just gorgeous! This one was really special for me. They all are!
