The Wangapeka track crosses Kahurangi National Park, from West Coast near Karamea to the Waimea Basin in the east.
It crosses two saddles, each of over 1,000 m, and travels through the beautiful beech-forested valleys of the Little Wanganui, Taipo, Karamea and Wangapeka rivers. There is little traffic from Helicopter Flat hut to the west coast where the track is graded as a route. There are warm modern ten bunk huts situated approx a day's walk apart and shelters strategically placed either side of the Little Wanganui Saddle.

Good to see the Wangapeka again. One of my favourite areas that I tramped and hunted while training at the nearby woody school in Golden Downs State Forest. In June 76 a group of us were tasked with cutting the track from Stag Flat back out to the Wangapeka Road. It rained every day for three weeks. We based ourselves at the original Trevor Carter hut which was in a good clearing on the true left near the Taipo/Karamea confluence. Our work trip was lead by Peter Bell who was the farmer/ranger at the end of the road. Cecil was in his camp on the way out. I see they have put the new one where the old Lunar Hut was. The hut facilities sure look a lot better than what we had. But the track west of Helicopter has become a bit of a mess. I went as far as Brough's tabernacle site in June 2016 for a tiki tour.

Thanks, always good to get a bit of history of what used to take place.

Well done Pete and ATC team! It was reminiscing for us. I don't want to do the western side of the Wangapeka track again ever. It was overgrown and difficult enough 5 years ago. It's good to know that the Belltown hut has been replaced though. It sure needed to be. It's track maintenance that's required in there now 😏

As I'm used to off track I didn't find it too bad for an infrequently used route. That said some others did.

Nice information and hike. Thank you for sharing. Not the best weather, but nice to see how the weather can be and not always the nice shiny weather 🙂Have a great day Like #47

Nicely curated, gosh how many times do you hear about those ponchos being more effective than raincoats!

Ponchos are well suited to tracked below the bushline travel. ln more open tracks I velcroed the front up for better ventilation to reduce condensation. Worked for me.

Wow! Thanks for sharing. That one's on my bucket list but definitely in a better forecast. Good call on the chopper. 👍

Epic trip and great video, thanks Pete. Seems ponchos ruled and being able to call helicpoter was a great option.

Having access to an Inreach and someone to organise things at the other end does provide much more options.

Thanks for the video, have been wondering about the track condition! Nice that the huts had firewood for you. Curious how you were able to call the chopper? A satellite phone? Will check out your other videos
