Great to see you've recovered. Funny how the Elves read the small text, for the junk that the Door salesman [Sauron] tried to sell them, and Sauron threw up a tantrum. It's bit sad but Sauron reminds me of the tragic tale of Turin Turambar, Pride, thrice damned pride, all he had to do is take a boat go west and apologize, he sought perfection, and yet all that's left in his wake is naught but ruin.

Hello.. I was first introduced to Tolkien's seminal "LOTRs" by my art teacher, Adrienne, in secondary school in 1976. I was 14 and without explanation one day she put a huge tome on my desk (complete LOTR on one volume) and said.. Nick, I think you'll enjoy this.. How right she was. It started a love affair that has lasted to this day. Adrienne has since passed from this Earth, but I am forever grateful to her. Bless you for keeping these stories alive brother.

Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.. -Gandalf I love this particular quote by Gandalf. Though I replaced the first word Saruman by Some. Because not only Saruman thinks that. Powerful people think that I think..

I wonder how Sauron's army was so powerful during that war. He didn't have Nazguls, Uruk-hai, Olig-hai trolls and Oliphaunts. But did he have easterlings and haradrims fighting along side with his main orc army? Or was it simply he just used orcs but their numbers were so vast none of the elves could withstand them? I hope the Amazon series can sheed some light on this.

This was Sauron at full strength. Orcs were not simply battle fodder then. Imagine the God you worship being physically present, visible, and fighting alongside you. Sauron's deceptive arts and the sheer terror he brought to the battlefield likely made each of his troops more effective.

Tbh I just feel like these details were under-developed. Of course they served their purpose for Tolkiens back story but it really doesn't add up. Just an army of orcs against Noldor? Seems like he had to have had millions. Same thing with Arnor and Angmar, I don't get how the armies of evil were so much stronger compared to the one that attacked Minas Tirith

"Hundred's of thousands or millions" I think you vastly overestimate the amount of forces Sauron had. To put it in perspective, there was never a nation in the history of our planet that had an army of millions until the modern era. Even an army of 100 thousand was very rare, and usually the product of an empire at the peak of it's power. More reasonably, Sauron probably had an army in the 10's of thousands. Another way to look at it is with the battle of unnumbered tears. After the fall of Maehdros's army in the east, Morgoth sent his eastern forces to join his western ones and assault Fingon and Turgon. Even being generous, their army was 20k elves and maybe 5k humans or so at the begining of the battle. At the end of the battle it may have been only half that. So let's say 12k and they were outnumbered 3 to 1 after all of Morgoths forces arrived. So let's say 35k-40k. This is the scale of battle we are talking about here, 10's of thousands, not millions, or even 100's of thousands.
@andrewfanner2245
@andrewfanner2245 3 жыл бұрын
You can also look at the available military population as a % of the population, even if the rest are committed to nthing but the war effort was the concept of a Total War implies. If the Numenoreans sent 100,000 and are not doing anything more than sending the peacetime standing military then that would put that at 5-10% of the population, presuming that they pretty much all come from the homeland as might be inferred from the text. If Sauron's forces are very much on a war footing and 20% of the available population is available to fight then a million orcs gives a total Orc population that seems quite low. Having said tjhat, its a quasi mediaeval world, so population levels will be relatively low.
@Parents_of_Twins
@Parents_of_Twins 3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps a single attacking force of 100k was rare but there were nations with more than 100k troops available. The Romans, Persians, Chinese, Egyptians, and Greeks to name a few. Xerxes alone brought between 150-250k soldiers with him when attempting to defeat Greece in 480 BC. So Sauron could have had a force that would have number between 750-1000k in an attempt to wipe out all those who stood against him. After all he spent nearly 100 years mustering his forces and Xerxes spent less than 20 years and orcs don't require highly nutritional diets nor good quarters like human soldiers.
@terry7907
@terry7907 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, these numbers are ridiculous. The logistics would have been impossible, no matter how simple a diet they had. Modern military scholars generally express extreme doubt about the reported size of Xerxe’s army, as well as many others in the ancient world.
@hughgedney3393
@hughgedney3393 3 жыл бұрын
@IValentin T what about the War of Wrath, we are also overestimated of Morgoth's army, some people believe Morgoth's orcs numbered in the tens of millions, while I believe there are at least 3,500,000 orcs during the final years of the first age. And I notice as well during the first age that Morgoth's other creatures were not many as his orcs.

Well, why did they accept him as King's counselor and High Priest when he was captured and brought to Numenor? He is Sauron the Deceiver! Only after the Downfall of Numenor did Sauron lose the ability to take fair form and became a truly evil Dark Lord. By the time of this war, the Numenoreans were already becoming arrogant, and winning the war only drove them more power-hungry. There would have been certainly a couple Numenorean nobles that wanted more power by all means and weren't concerned about where it was coming from.

After delivering the palatir, the witch king said "my Lord I have delivered the palatir and we have located the new ring, it is with the spider." Then Sauron said "you have served me well. Minas Morgul is yours. Now bring me Celebrimbor's ring." But the Nazgul Lord asked "what of Shelob?" Sauron replied "send the Nazgul, all of them!" Now my question is why was Sauron so desperately in demand for Celebrimbor's ring?

If SAURON could sense the other ringbearers and influence them, thoughts fall to when Bilbo or Frodo wore the one ring near those with rings, and in the presence of those with their rings why they did or did not fall under the influence of Bilbo or Frodo at those times. Just was thinking about it today when they took theirs off but did not when Bilbo or Frodo was in possession or use of it, and how they could track Bilbo or Frodo through the ring on its journey.

Sauron 'learned of the location of the Seven', it doesn't say he ever got or distributed them. It is possible that Celebrimbor distributed them and gave Durin his, as written, without contradicting this. That Sauron would later go to GREAT efforts to collect the surviving Rings of the Seven later implies he never had them, and was tying up loose ends.

There is at least one issue with your video Yoystan. Yes, for the year 1700 (Second Age) Tolkien does write in LotR, Appendix B: "Tar-Minastir sends a great navy from Númenor to Lindon. Sauron is defeated. The issue is that Tar-Minastir's reign did not begin until S.A. 1731. In the year 1700, his aunt Tar-Telperiën reigned as the second Ruling Queen from 1556 to 1731. We must guess that Minastir somehow persuaded his aunt to allow him to send military aid under the command of the admiral Ciryatur to the Elves.

I`m guessing that the Woodland Elves of King Thranduil didn`t take part in these Second Age battles? Was that Realm not established yet? Also, what about Celeborn and Galadriel in Lothlorian? Was their Realm also involved, or established as yet?

This is purely a mental exercise. The Last Alliance has defeated Sauron, the cost of victory was terrible. But, what if Elrond managed to prevail upon Isidur to throw the One Ring into the fires that made it. Obviously, Mordor would be broken beyond repair. Important note here, Orcs were able to survive without Sauron's rule! Now, many surviving Noldorian Elves would make there way to the Grey Havens, even some Sindarian Elves from Lothlorien following Galadriel and Celebrimborn into the West. With the power of the One Ring gone, the Elven Rings were powerless, meaning Middle Earth would see the Elves diminish. So, Cirdan would remain in the Grey Havens, his job to aid any remaining Elves passage to the West. A small group of young Elves would remain in Rivendel. I think the bulk of remaining Elves would be under King Thranduil of Greenwood, but Lothlorien would have a token Elven presence. The surviving Orcs fleeing to dark places to hide and grow again in strength in the Grey Mountains, Gundabad and Misty Mountains.
