A surprisingly modern siege in the early stages of the Peninsular War, a Napoleonic Stalingrad on the Ebro.

Such a great video! Your war room series is simply one of my favorite contents on KZfaq! You present the subject in very detailed and interesting way that's pleasing to watch and it is always rich on information. Your editing with maps and draws without the exaggerations that other content creators usually use, also add a lot to the quality of the video. Congratulations for the great work!!!

I love discussions of this period of warfare. A neat in between of 1776 and 1914

It's fascinating to see that determined urban defense can hold up a professional army with a smaller and less trained force and yet it's a rare occurrence in 19th century warfare.

It happens from time to time. The British attack on Buenos Aires in 1807 is another example.

Bravissimo, Hapless! A most interesting and educational video, made all the more enjoyable by my recent holiday in Spain and Portugal. Needless to say, none of my tour guides did any justice to my personal interest in the Peninsula War, although I did get to see some of the paintings you used. That was an impressive collection that you assembled, by the way.

Thanks very much! There's so much really good art from that period- very jealous you got to see some of it in person.

Great video, and excellent use of graphical aids to drive the narration. I really liked the several strategic-level abstractions. Only one thing struck me as odd: the lack of mentioning the siege of Girona (or Gerona), another Spanish city with a similar contemporary siege(s). Regarding Spanish historiography, it is usual to talk about them together.

I was originally going to go with the Peloponnesian War for this one, but it needs so much context to make sense. Definitely on the list.

Oh man, I can't wait. Hope you cover the Sicilian Expedition part of it too. But one thing after another. I think covering history beyond the 20th century is for sure going to gain you a far larger audience.

@@usuallyhapless9481 Late to this party, but Thucydides mentions mouseholing during the failed Theban attempt to seize Plataea by surprise in 431BC, so yeah, I'd say you're right about that.

25:35 If I were to be pedantic, that's not true. There was a divisional battle at Madia, in Naples, in 1806, where the British won. Though I will readily concede that it's very pedantic and Bailen is the first French defeat in a sense that it truly strategic implications.

It's Oman's History of the Peninsular War. It's definitely on Amazon, but the final volume was published back in 1930 so it's out of copyright (at least in the UK) so they're all here: www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/39035
