How does the British Army attack the village of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915 and what does this tell us about the state of combined arms at the time?
Frontlines in the maps are approximate, I also borked the audio so it's... not great.
This is part of the War Room series looking at the tactical developments leading up to the creation of modern warfare in World War One.

The sheer hell of this war and the butchers bill interests me greatly and I have really enjoyed your commentary. Reading Haigs diaries and the pressure our generals were under to relieve the French who had taken unimaginable casualties , even though we weren’t trained , ready or had tactics capable of sustaining any initial success . The western front associations lectures are an invaluable resource on understanding the difficulties we faced at this time .

2nd vote for book recommendation video. I will say, i do really appreciate your combat mission stuff and with the fact that you and only a very small handful of people do AAR style editied videos of CM, you'd never burn out the audience by a constant stream of them. Covering obscure ww1 battles is never a wrong-foot though, great video mate.

This was fantastic. WW1 battle tactics are fascinating, and much more sophisticated and thought out than the 'Blackadder' version that has taken a grip in popular culture. It is interesting to see even in early 1915 the British are already approaching battles with a high level of thought. Looking forward to the next video!

@@usuallyhapless9481 I love it too, but the way it buys into the WW1 myths annoys me more and more the older I get, though it is probably unfair of me to expect a comedy to give accurate details on early 20th century platoon tactics.

The Great War is my absolute favourite piece of military history to learn about. This was an incredible overview of this battle! May I ask though, where did you find these illustrations? They are gorgeous and as an artist myself, is massively inspirational and I have the urge to study them

This is very late, but have a search for an artist called Fortunio Matania. He was an illustrator for the British papers during WW1 and did a lot of images like those in the videos. I got a book of his images recently called 1914-1918 Through the Eyes of Fortunino Matania. He was drawing for one nation's newspapers, so the images are quite "heroic", but fantastic to look at all the same.

I've been to some of the battleifields in France where the Champagne offensives were fought. It's amazing; there's a slight rise on one end of the field and it took the French years and tens of thousands of lives to capture some of these place.

This is an amazing video! I always look forward to seeing a new episode of The War Room. You are very adept at both explaining and solving tactical problems in your own CM videos, so it's always interesting to see how you evaluate real-life scenarios as well. There's certainly a lot of intelligence to gather here :) I know you said you 'borked' the audio on this one, so don't take this as a specific complaint about this video. It's just that in general my only real criticism of your content is the microphone quality. Again, I know you have an excuse for this video, but in my view your microphone sometimes sounds overall low-quality, sometimes sounds too "tinny", and sometimes sounds like you're too far away/too quiet. I'm not an audiophile so I don't mind it that much, nor do I really have any suggestions on how to fix this-- but since your commentary, gameplay, and editing are all top-notch, unfortunately it makes audio issues stand out (at least for me, especially since I listen at 2x speed and have it piped into my headphones twice as quickly as usual). In the past you've said you don't have a Patreon, but I'd love to contribute to getting you some better audio gear if you ever set something like that up. I don't know how you usually record audio for your videos, but maybe you could establish a standard recording distance from the microphone? In lieu of being able to provide legitimately helpful audio advice, I'd be happy to put my money where my ears are and support the channel :P

Wonderful as always Hapless! Question/suggestion for future topic: if the artillery has not developed their combined arms capabilities, or "firing from a map" as you mentioned, what have they been doing? They seem like such obvious paths of technological improvements that it's hard to imagine that artillery officers would not jump on the idea. So what has their focus been on instead? Developing ways to crack fortresses or something? Many thanks!

Really good explanation of an early WW1 set piece battle. Would love to see later battles for comparison- what lessons were learned? How much of a "butcher" were entente generals like Haig? Perhaps looking at some battles from the 100 days offensive, or the German 1917 offensive?

What always puzzles me in situations when some random unsuppressed by artillery machine gun nests stopped entire rifle companies is why certain platoon/company commanders didn't try to suppress them with concentrated platoon rifle fire. Platoon fire concentrated on a single target must be roughly equivalent to a single machine gun fire. Perhaps it still wasn't efficient enough to neutralize MG nest? I also wonder what weapon system was crucial for infantry organic firepower later in the war. Perhaps mortars?
@usuallyhapless9481
@usuallyhapless9481 2 жыл бұрын
Obviously circumstances vary and it's complex, but I'd say it has a lot to do with the immense difficulty of doing anything whilst under effective fire.
@Strakh1992
@Strakh1992 2 жыл бұрын
@@usuallyhapless9481 Yeah, perhaps. My guess is that rifle grenades and mortars were invented primarily to effectively engage enemy positions behind the defilade from some concealed temporary positions in no man's land, like a shellhole. Hapless, could you say please when the Stokes mortar became a whidespread weapon in British army?
