As of now, John Carpenter's final film is The Ward. If anyone else had directed this, it would be passably mediocre. As the final Carpenter film, it's depressingly dull and derivative.

There has been a rumor that has circulated about “The Ward” from crew members behind the scenes. The majority of the movie was really directed by the film’s writers, Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, with Carpenter spending more time in his trailer playing video games than actually “directing”.

The Ward (2010) is bland, obnoxious at many points visually with not great performances, and the manner in which it tackles traumatic responses and the harmful old school therapy methods is clumsy, ham fisted and uninspired. And the twist at the end is absolutely predictable. Kinda sad that this was John Carpenters last movie.

Yeah, one thing I noticed with a lot of directors is that they loose their style as they get older. I love it when their style evolves such with Martin Scorsese and George Miller, but a lot of other directors aren't as fortunate.

Cody, have you heard of the 90s anthology John Carpenter was a part of? It's called "Body Bags." Not only does he co-direct it with Tobe Hooper, produce it and do the music, he also starred in the wrap-around storyline as 'the coroner' and he's actually really funny in the role. It's a horror but has a tongue in cheek aspect to it. It's a bit like Creep Show.

I think one of the fundamental reasons it doesn't feel like a john carpenter movie is because it doesnt sound like a john carpenter movie. Some dude named Mark Killan wrote the music. With out carpenters music a lot of his films would lose a lot of the atmosphere. Its also probably a sign he wasnt very invested in the project that he didnt bother to write music for it.

It’s called Phantoms and Fairytales Candyman (4) Phantasm (5) Final Destination (5) Leprechaun (8) Terrifier (3) Wishmaster (3) Twisted Childhood Universe (3…assuming Peter Pan is out by the 31st) I know you probably don’t like comments unrelated to the current video, I get it, but I thought this was a great idea and didn’t know where else to post it because I’m not on any other social media. To make part of my comment relevant to the video, I’ll say that I did see The Ward and yeah…it’s not good. I can’t believe this was John Carpenter. I remember it being very amateurish. Keep rocking man!

I consider The Ward & Village of the Damned to be worse than Ghosts of Mars for the same reason I consider NOES (2010) to be worse than Freddy's Dead: Lifeless films with no personality are worse than spectacular failures. It felt like Carpenter wasn't even trying with this one.

Carpenter had a great run from the late seventies to the late eighties. He was the king of the low budget genre movie. However, he didn't progress much as a filmmaker once the nineties rolled around. Spielberg graduated from popcorn cinema to making stuff like Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, while at the same time, Tarantino and other big hitters of nineties cinema were making their mark. Unfortunately, Carpenter never adapted to the changing cinematic landscape and never had his Citizen Kane moment, never made that one movie which would have caused the critics to sit up and re-evaluate his prowess as a filmmaker. His niche was the low budget genre pic and in the eighties, no-one did it better. When all's said and done, if he's only remembered for The Thing and Halloween, that isnt a bad legacy. As for The Ward, I quite enjoyed it upon first viewing... until the ending. If I hadn't seen Identity first, my opinion may have been different. Great cast though, with some nice performances.
