The chief arbiter work is to handle these issues, u can't threaten someone doing his job with "i'll make an appeal" unless they did something really wrong and abused their power, also last time I checked twitter was not the official place to perform an appeal about FIDE tournament, going straight to the media skipping all the official process is 100% an emotional choice and not formal or to be more specific (unprofessional)

Alireza always struck me as a very emotional player with some ego problems. I remember During the previous candidate's after a defeat he spent several hours late into the night playing bullet games with Daniel Naroditsky so he could probably feel better about himself by beating a lower-ranked player (which ended up affecting his performance the following day). I know he is young, but other younger players like Pragg, Gukesh, or Abdusattorov never seen to have these sort of issues

One time when I was returning to my classroom, walking down the hall, as I entered one young girl said, "Mr (HeartlandLiberal), you walk like you stomping roaches." Alireza was clearly in the wrong, since a player had just complained about him, and he adjusted his stride, and walked quietly after the incident with arbiter.

The arbiter was right. Firouzja should know that stomping around with careless regard to other players is just not polite. Anyone who has been in a situation where quiet is called for, e.g. a library, knows that stomping or "stompish" noise from your shoes is something you should instinctively be aware of. That said, I really don't like this venue. There are posh hotels or other places in Toronto better suited for class events such as this.

Really, only people that have been under pressure to perform very well are qualified to answer that question. So there's something called the "flow state" that can be very hard to get into. Others will call this mental state "the zone". When in the zone, you are capable or doing monumental feats that you would normally not have been able to. You can be taken out the zone by the simplest actions though. That's why you see some teams calling time outs in competitive sports to try to disrupt the flow, or momentum, of a game. It's why some dealers at casinos will tell some craps players that get too hot to stop throwing the dice too high, or too low or just differently altogether. So when Alireza was asked to "stop walking so loud" or whatever it was, it didn't even have to be about his walking. It could of been a question or request about anything and that's all you need to take somebody out the flow state because now he's not completely focused on the game. Also, why couldn't that have waited after the game as well? Why during the game? Why not before the game? Delicate situations like these need to be handled appropriately and not in such a cretinous way.
@TyTimeIsAwesome
@TyTimeIsAwesome 3 ай бұрын
I agree, but I dont' think it could have waited until after the game. There was already a complaint by one of the players. Alireza might be right that the arbiter’s action distracted him, but the arbiter‘s action seems to be perfectly justified, because both he (the arbiter) and a player (Abusatov) were disturbed by the noise Alireza was making by walking indiscreetly, before he corrected the way he walked. He should make sure not to cause annoyance to other players and arbiter, which he accidentally failed to do, so it’s his responsibility, the arbiter did the right thing, it seems.

It's sad watching Alireza's shift into particular set of players including Niemann, Inarkiev and so on. One could think that what he did before the candidates to Wesley was because of sheer and more or less honest desire to play, but now everything's clear.

Arbiter should have just deflected - apologize for interrupting and say the venue is echoey so we are asking all players to please walk softly to minimize disruption. Suggesting new shoes was too much. Event should have a carpet put in if it continues to be an issue.

Yea, no one other than the organizers has control over creeky floors. It’s not the player’s responsibility, FIDE shifting the responsibility to players (especially people such as myself who walk heavier) is really unprofessional and unfair. FIDE should upgrade the venue full stop.

I had Anand's idea. Same reason. Matter fact, I assumed Alireza would do it and was wondering how he managed to lose (assuming he did -- i haven't reached the end of the video yet, but the thing with the shoes implies a complaint, which implies a loss). Maybe Alireza was looking too hard for a win and didn't see the possible activity on the Queenside? Nah -- if I can see it, he can see it. Game 10 of Carlsen -- Karjakin where I saw the "obvious" draw, flipped my computer off only to learn the next day that Carlsen had won ("how????") is not going to repeat itself. Maybe the shoe thing is true. Because the game after g6 is really not hard to calculate: Black is tied up, White's target is obvious, he's got all the time in the world to set it up perfectly, so it calculates more like an endgame position: you just move the pieces in your head to their eventual targets, and then look at what happens after the breakthrough on the queenside. Bad arbiter!

But then players would complain about smelly feet (which is what naturally happens when taking shoes off after having them on all day). FIDE knows that the building is old and has creeky floors, it should not be the player’s responsibility to solve this as they have no control over it. FIDE should have done some maintenance on the floors, maybe sound proofing it and eventually just reconstruction of the floor.

The chief arbiter was justified but should have held the suggestion about wearing softer shoes until after the game was over. It could not have been taken before the end of the game anyway and having your outfit choices fall into question is probably more stressful than being told to walk more softly or in another area.

In my opinion arbiter is right all he did was based on Codes , Alireza made a big mistake when he decided to exchange his night with Nepos bishop , now a days players don't play positional chess specially alireza , when there is a huge blocked by pawns knight is superior to bishop.

While I like Pragg and I am rooting for him and a few others, his playing with the chair can be a bit distracting for his opponents. Hopefully it does not become an issue. At this level something like squeaky shoes can upset the concentration of players and Arbiter is doing the right thing. I guess informing ahead of the game may be better but then players arrive just before the game which may not surface the issue.

I think the arbiter handled the situation very well. Received a complaint, observed and offered suggestions to solve the problem. What is interesting to me though is how nervous the arbiter seemed to be. Was it because he was being interviewed, feared some kind of reprisal from Alireza, or as he mentioned his posturing actually shook him?

The arbiter should had left the issue till end of the game. The arbiter only mentioned the issue since Abasov complained. An arbiter shouldn't react to such issue when it's raised by another player. Anyhow, this is my opinion.

A very interesting game indeed. As for the case with the footfalls and the chief arbiter, without any firsthand knowledge who could be in the wrong; in my opinion as a professional you should be prepared to take criticism impeded. Everyone involved in professional sports deals with criticism and most don´t let it affect their performance negatively.

That was an intelligent answer... He thought he was merely doing his job trying to resolve a player complaint. What made the situation complicated is that Alireza stated that the shoes were "approved". How can the arbiter verify that the shoes were approved? If the shoes were "approved" then the complaint should have been refuted by the arbiter using policy. Player, "Excuse me, those SHOES are loud!" Arbiter, "Those shoes have been approved...After the tournament you may file a complaint against policy..." If the shoes were not approved...well... The arbiter may return to the player that issued the complaint... Arbiter, "Yes. The shoes are unapproved...Do you want to press the issue? Yes or no?..." This^ way the arbiter shifts the "focus" off of himself to the "player" pressing policy against another player... If no, the Arbiter will conclude with, "...you still hold the right to file a complaint after the tournament is over." If yes, Alireza would be politely asked to remove his shoes...Compliments of said player... In a complicated situation, if there is a refusal to remove the shoes... Arbiter, "...are you sure? A policy infraction may result in a prize award reduction..." Infractions against policy may result in: - Prize award reduction penalty against the player - Filed policy infraction report ( ...not filed against the player; Filed against policy. ) - Possible Policy Adjustments ( ...to prevent complications like this from happening in the future... ) I believe this^ may cover it :) Thanks for reading! :D Maybe I might get a job now :)

Since he was walking in the refreshing area, it means that he wasn't over the chessboard thinking. So I think Alireza is overreacting. The arbiter did his job very well. He didn't distract him. Also he stopped making noise while walking afterwards, which means that the complaint was valid.

How hard is it to consider the type of flooring before the tournament and lay down carpet or a rug? Seems like an easy thing to anticipate if you know the players will want a quiet environment. Definitely an oversight by Fide or the venue organizers.

Abasov hot balls to complain, cudos to him. Firouzja acquired fency shoes, what if he was wearing leather trousers? And imagine women with creaky Gucci snd zlouis Vutton bags! And - if they all were eating chips, "Smoki" or "štapić Bobby gor your hobby"! I wonder if Nepi is slurping his dpping-juice?

The arbiters response was clear but also ridiculous, he even talks about extra carpeting at the end (an actual solution) after trying to justify distracting a player mid game despite there being creaky floors and despite Alirezas shoes being approved. You talk to the player about it AFTER the game or you disqualify them for making unnecessary noise/unsportsmanlike conduct. If the floor is too loud it is not because of the player it is because of a poor choice of venue/no carpeting. These things shouldve been solved before any of the games have started and to ask Alireza mid game to adjust the way he walks because of a complaint is unprofessional.

Completely arbiter's fault. Why don't they check these simple creaking issues in one playing hall. He should've used some gestures in the extreme. And the suggestion to change his shoes midgame is insane! It was even the rest area. Besides, when you're thinking, a minute's interruption with conversation can really distract your line of thought for more than 5. Alireza is already so frenetic.
