I’m 56 and the reason they draw in people my age ,older rockers is this,their music reminds us of 80’s,grunge and punk and metal all in one .They are not like any other band ,they are still wholesome and touring with family etc.You are reminded of their youth on their down time but the ferocity they play with on stage is almost unmatched.Their music touches my soul and you realize this is a generational talent .Their story is amazing and finding them today is like finding zeppelin in 1970 ..

There's not one throw away line. Everything they say is decided between the 3 of them and I love hearing that the only time things get heated between them is in the writing of the lyrics. This shows how much they care about what they say and how they say it. In this world of Cancel culture you have to be thoughtful and tactful in making a commentary about ANYTHING. These young women know exactly how far to push to not alienate any fans. I've heard some takes on their lyrics that are 100% opposite of how I feel socially/politically and isn't that incredible?!

Lyrically the Warning are really mature songwriters for their age. They do follow a formula for their songwriting, in the sense that every song is an anthem or anthem-like. Their music is designed to be played in massive stadiums, so they’re similar to bands like the Foo Fighters and Queen. Like these bands, the Warning can keep the messages very personal, sometimes uncomfortably so. More is an outstanding song because it’s about the push-pull relationship they have with their fans. It’s rare that any band presents an honest view of that relationship, because it does court a backlash.

Well said ... completely agree with your analysis. They are well versed in today's issues in their approach to song writing. As you stated, they are warning us to make changes...for the better . The last three shows in their home country showed us they are READY to take on the world stage not as opening act , but the headline act ! The use of a string orchestra for Black Holes (my personal favorite) , and segway into Enter Sandman is yet another way of them evolving !!! HYCAD in my opinion is a heavy bass driven track . Puts the tempo of the song around Ale's performance. The way they unveiled SICK with the audience participation was just sheer genius 👏. One point well worth noting was when Dany had issues with her Manson on Z ... she handled it with great finesse... turned of the wireless, held the guitar to let right side to let Pau know there's a issue. And continued singing till Carlos brought out her backup . True professionals...all three of them . 👏 👏 👏

Their new one Hell You call a Dream is just pure magic lyrically. Breathe at the Pepsi Center made me cry. The End is my favorite rock ballad. Finally, Narcissita is the best rock F you song of all time. I’m 70 and I went to the concert in KC last year touring with Halestorm. I wasn’t supposed to be on my feet but I convinced the Doctor, and my wife, that after 2 years of not being able to walk around that I needed to do this for my mental health. Cane in hand and disabled parking right at the front of the venue helped. First rock concert I had attended in 30 yrs. What I love about The warning's lyrics is the concomitant presence of deep meaning and high literary register. Pau said in a recent interview that it is difficult fo them to compose lyrics in Spanish because how you say something they want to say in Spanish doesn't fit with the rhythm of the song. So, in effect, I think the issue is that they are comfortable with the iambic pentameter of normal English speech patterns because they have used it for composing the vast majority of their songs. When they wrote Narcisista, for example, they first wrote out their thoughts in English and then attempted to translate that into Spanish. But after consulting with their mother, they learned that it wasn't grammatically correct and she assisted them in making it into a viable song. I believe Martirio was composed in Spanish from the outset and you hear the cadence being rushed and compressed at the very beginning to express a complete thought in a grammatically correct way. It will be interesting to see if they include more Spanish language songs in their future albums. I've heard that the new album does not have a Spanish song, though.

@@elgonwilliams7624In earlier interviews they stated that the majority of music they listened to as a family was all in English. They feel English works best for rock music. They were educated in a full immersion English school so working in English goes well with how they were educated. Although there are Spanish rock songs, most of the moat well known songs (and the ones on the Rock Band game) are in English. Writing jn English was a smart idea in that it it massively widened their global appeal, since most of the world speaks some English. It is possible that if they kept to solely Spanish lyrics, they would have been as creative, just not as well known.

Thanks for coming back to The Warning. Yes, they have a way of reaching out to thier audience in a way I have not felt very many times in my life. I was there in Monterrey when Dany (and the rest of us) broke down during "When I'm Alone" I was also there in Mexico City when Pau did "Breathe". All 8000 of us were affected by her performance. Yeah, I was one of the many in tears. I agree about how they present the social commentary as well. I really like that their commentary is not a statement of what they believe, but more asking a question of us to reflect and think about what we think and feel. They are also very good at leaving interpretation up to us. I know that in discussions with many other The Warning fans, each of us draws different meaning and impact from the same lyrics. I think these make them quite exceptional writers. MORE is an interesting one for sure. I think that there is room for play in amongst the serious topics they cover in their lyrics. I think that sometimes fun can be missing in the world around us. The song makes me smile. Perhaps we could all take a little break from serious and smile a little more? Nothing wrong with that, and I think many would say that is an important part of mental health (another topic that they address regularly).

From "Money": "Rapacity will be the illness." That line made my head snap around the first time and I had to rewind it to be sure I heard it correctly. They sometimes stretch the meaning of words, or use an alternate meaning. Also they use words that the average native speaker might not even know. Obviously, they are well-educated and all three are capable of composing songs without any assistance, though most of their songs come from Pau instigating the effort and sharing what she creates with he others for collaboration and turning out a finished song. I believe Pau is the primary lyricist of the band, which seems to fit her personality. She is very direct with her interactions. Though she appears to be empathetic, she attempts to control her emotions, but they can overwhelm her as well because she is not reserved and is actually very passionate in expressing her feelings to others. Interesting contrast. In interviews she seems to be the most fluent speaker in both English and Spanish, despite Dany being the front person that does 75% or more of the direct communication to the audience in a concert. I believe Dany's thought processes skip past her ability to express things at times. That is something that happens a lot with creative people. I also think she is more comfortable letting her guitar speak for her. I also think Ale is a lot more comfortable speaking in Spanish than in English, though I doubt she has any problem communicating in either language. She also seems very content to let both her sisters do the talking. Maybe that is part of the sibling dynamic, but I also notice that whenever she does speak, the others shut up and listen. So it may be more that she only speaks when she has something important to say.
@psychologyofrock

I loved your video. I think that one thing that sets The Warning’s quality above many other bands is their open and honest communication with each other. If one of them doesn’t like something, they aren’t afraid to say it. They tend to develop their songs by committee, amongst themselves, and aren’t afraid to explore options- even if it means working on a song for years, to get it right. They are all highly intelligent and are some of the most gifted musicians that I have seen. They know what works for them and they perfect their craft, rather than trying to be something that they’re not. In the end, we end up with great songs and thought provoking lyrics. Also, I do have a favorite lyric which is from Choke. “but this where I’ll stay. Comfortably in pain.” I think that’s such an incredible look at how we are as humans. So often we wear our pain/sorrow like medals or as our identities. Martirio touches on that topic and just so happens to be my favorite song by The Warning. It’s a great reflection on our humanity which to me is way more entertaining than another song talking about a relationship. Art is a beautiful and vast experience. I don’t think it should ever get bogged down in redundancy. That being said I think The Warning will always bring us great music combined with great lyrics.

Yes! And I agree with your comment. It is human nature to often stick with familiar experiences, even when they bring pain, because we fear the unknown and we are used to what we know. Through awareness of this tendency, we can start to break free from these things and separate them from our identities. Many layers to that song indeed! :)

Following them from XXI Century Blood, I have been amazed at the depth of life's experiences contained within the lyrics from artists so young! 🤯 I hadn't really noticed this, but your statement of the majority of fans are older is interesting. As someone in their mid-60s, I really am amazed at the depth of the lyrics and the musical abilities of these 3 musicians. Which is why I, too, have a very special place in my heart for Rush and Tool; there is just depth and meaning to the lyrics and much ability. I know you didn't say as much, but I think that Dany, Pau and Ale definitely have the potential to make a big impact on the music world, but they have a might further to go to actually be in the Rush and Tool category, but I'm just happy watching the growth and development and having the ear candy to listen to. Right now, my favorite The Warning song is Hell You Call a Dream. It hit me like an Abrams tank from the 1st time I heard it. The power and control that Dany sang it with at Guadalajara just blows me away!

A very good analysis which spoke to me about one important reason ( the lyrics ) why I love this band and their music so much. The emotional reaction they can evoke with their music and lyrics is exceptional, all the more astonishing given their very young age when many of the songs were composed. The recent use of the string orchestra enhanced the experience and took it to an even higher level ( I hope we get a high quality rendition of the experience ). If they continue as they are, they will surely become one of the all time great composers whose music will stretch across the centuries to come!

“Get dressed in black and mourn again, fake funerals for all my friends cause I can’t let it go” from Animosity always makes me ponder. My interpretation is about falling into sadness over friends that aren’t your friends anymore, I think, I’m not sure. I heard (don’t quote me on this) that Dany wrote the song about a friend who was mad at her for spending too much time with the band. What are your thoughts on that lyric?

Thanks for your video !! great a s usual Few things about their songs. You could even have integrated Escape the Mind in the sense that most of the songs from XXI st century blood" were written at the same time Indeed some songs are their experiences When i'm alone written by Dany at Berklee when she had to write a song (1 and a half months at music school) and she was homesick or Black Holes written by Pau when she was 13 about the addiction of a loved one or Animosity lyrics from Pau's reaction about a (former 😉 )friend who told her to come and hang out with him that music wasn't important... and as you said what is very very interesting about their lyrics is that you can interpret them in several ways and that everyone can find a different meaning in them

I agree with everything you mentioned about the lyrics and their musianship, but also additional factors are that they are wholesome on stage and off. They are being themselves and letting the songs sell them, not dancing around trying to act provocative to get attention. That gives them the 'family appeal' that everyone gets from them. The fans create a bond with them and support and encourage them to keep evolving into a better and better band. We all have a small piece of their future and want the best for them.

I think the lyrics of "More" could be about a dysfuctional romantic relationship or the parasocial relationship between content creator & watcher/consumer. Always wanting more & never being truely satisfied as you might be irl. It is a new type of relationship & the video heavily features gifts from their fans, for instance. I agree they are one of the best rock bands of the last decade.

I'm a psychologist too. There is a lot to this band that really appeals to me from that point of view. Obviously, there was a lot of seemingly good supportive parenting going on. When they want to they speak English without an accent. I've seen them speak French. Education. I hope this isn't insulting but I don't think anyone understands social media and video like GenZ girls. They leveraged that from a very early age. Not just the songs seem very mature but the video they put out as kids and independents was way above anything you'd expect. They are truly pro. I saw one producer I think say that when they suggested something the 3 of them would turn to each other and start talking fast in Spanish and then... give them a verdict. That relationship where some young women would just be overwhelmed and comply... is extremely interesting from a psychological point of view. And then the fact they are known to be really nice people. There is a lot there.

Nena you got it 100% on point! Such a great assessment of the band’s best attributes! I’m 71 and have been watching them since 2014 when Enter Sandman came out and suddenly went viral, I had seen Paulina when she was younger beating her drums like they owed her money 😂! It wasn’t much further down the line that they started writing their own music, once this happened I had already formed an opinion that they were destined for greatness! Now they’re well on the way to becoming a top tier band, no doubt about it! Next year I think will be their biggest opportunity to prove themselves. I have been lucky enough to see them live, when they came to the UK earlier in the year I saw the at London and some friends of mine saw them with Muse at Huddersfield, they were seriously impressed with their performance and energy!

TW's secret sauce is in their songwriting talent. I can think of more talented bands instrumentally like Band Maid and Rush, but TW writes songs with melodic and musical phrases you can remember and repeat while you're on your own in the shower or while folding the laundry. Earworms or hooks, in other words. Combine that with relatability and they are almost unbeatable. Now, I'm a boomer and you'll see boomers in line to hear them in concert along with teens and everyone in between. Boomers were raised on rock and roll and can't relate to EDM or even hip hop very much. So when TW came along playinig good old fashion rock, we were relieved that our favorite kind of music was having a real serious renaissance in the hands of three girls worthy of our admiration in every possible way and that our children and grandchildren were loving it, too. Go, TW, go!!!

My first concert was Rush in the 80s. Seen The Warning last. I’m Gen-X also. I find in the U.S. they do seem to have an older crowd. My thinking is not a lot of rock fans in the younger ages. But south of the border they look like younger fans. I find that even though The Warning sings mostly in English they have a huge fan base in Mexico and Argentina. I still think they have a ways to go in the U.S.. I’m 58 as of 11/11 and my wife and I have seen them 3 times. They are my favorite band. Hi Nena, I've got to tell after seeing them live 4 the 1st time and hearing the new two songs I am now convinced The Warning DPA Goddesses will become one of the greatest bands ever. The many bands I experienced live through my 90s summer concerts and festivals only had at most three favorite or really good songs whereas The Warning"s every song are thought provoking or have wowing wonderderig how or what they meant by that? I don't understand why my favorite song by them is the one I'm listening depending on what mood I'm in. I don't think I'm being bias because I'm Mexican but one thing's for sure I can't get enough even more so that I've seen them live and THAT has NEVER happened to me before! Interesting that I have had many if the same thoughts about The Warning as time has gone by listening to their music since my first exposure to them in 2020. That they challenge us to think rather than telling us what to think rings true in the way they write their lyrics. Also, the question as to whether they sold out to the mainstream with the song "More" I had a similar response, that they haven't made a mistake or turned their backs on the fans. I just don't think it's in their nature to write drivel or fluff, or at least not entirely. True musicians will experiment in many ways (lyrically and sonically) and they are still young and have a wide spectrum ahead to do just that, experiment. Thanks for this analysis, Nina!

THE coolest thing about The Warning is that they have nearly universal appeal across all generations. A lot of us are Boomers! We grew up on hard rock in the '60s and '70s. So The Warning is a refreshing respite from all the crap we've had to wade through since. These ladies are prescient WAY beyond their years. They actually write about something other than sex, drugs, and rock and roll (musical themes which get a wee bit stale after you're about 25 and start settling down). When I heard their first cover of Enter Sandman, I thought, "Oh, cute. I hope they keep it up." When I heard 21st Century Blood and saw that video, I thought, "HOLY SH!T, BATMAN! They kept it up!" I knew then that this trio had potential. Their TED Talk in 2017 made me cry tears of joy. They're just awesome people. I hope I see them live before I die. On the bucket list...

One thing I do know about their very personal-seeming songs is that they use the process of writing the songs themselves as a way to work through things they're feeling or observing. They've said in a couple of interviews (where the interviewer was actually asking questions with depth) that the process lets them get outside of the feeling and see its shape, which helps them to understand its scope and see it for what it really is. Brilliant. I will also say, speaking as a poet myself, that it is rarely a good idea to assume that an author or an artist is literally talking about themselves, even if they've written something in the first person. I tend to think of it along the lines that writing in the first person seems to allow the reader or listener to experience the feelings or perspectives better for themselves. The human psyche seems to have the most empathy with things written in the first person. Back to the Warning, and their lyrics, though... One of the things I love most about their lyricism is that even in the works of theirs that feel the most personal to whichever of them penned the words, they always take care to leave room for the listener to have their own interpretations of the words, the feelings, the meanings. I've seen them surprised (and pleasantly so) several times in interviews by someone interpreting one of their songs in a new way. That's the hallmark of a stellar poet, and all three of them are that. i'm also a huge fan of Rush and Tool - in large part because of the sheer brilliance of their lyrics. Neil Peart is probably my favorite lyricist of all time, and I will hold the Villareal sisters right up there with him, in the highest esteem :)

Can we just take a moment to also acknowledge The Warning's artistic integrity? They were approached at a very young age by big studio execs who thought they were dumb kids who could be strong armed into questionable contracts and then dressed up in a corporate generated image. The girls basically told them to f*ck off with that jazz, and continued to write and play the music they wanted to, even if it meant a smaller audience, because it's not about the money for them. That iron spine, that commitment to being true to themselves, resonates with their fans, who have often been all too disappointed by our musical heroes selling out to trends and fads, and it's a key ingredient that will keep The Warning relevant far into the future.

Great video - my new favorite that you have done on The Warning! For favorite song, its Evolve mostly for the music but I do like "Dry my tears 'cause I'm a weapon; Weapons never weep; I'm not in danger; I'm the danger". For favorite lyrics, Animosity is my favorite, especially "If karma doesn't hit you then I will"!! And for pure intention, Narcisista is hands down the best!!

Exceptional analysis. Instant subscribe. I eagerly await your take on Queen of the Murder Scene. As I always say, The Warning isn’t just a band name, it is a mission statement. As for a favorite? Well, there’s about 50 of them. Favorite Dany performance of a Dany song? ‘Crimson Queen ‘at Lunario. Favorite Dany guitar solo in a Pau song? ‘Show Me the Light’. Or maybe ‘The End’? Favorite Pau performance of a QotMS song? ‘Dust to Dust’ at DiDi … or is it ‘The End’? Favorite Ale bass intro? ‘Z’ … or maybe ‘Disciple’? Well, let’s stick to the easy ones. Favorite Pau cover of a Radiohead song? ‘Creep’. Favorite Dany cover of a Halestorm song? ‘Break in’. 😊

This was a wonderful breakdown of what The Warning brings to us lyrically and musically. I would be very interested in your thoughts about their 10th-anniversary video. It is an emotional look into their journey from children to adults in the music business and I think you might have some interesting insights into it.

My favorite lyrics are "If karma doesn't hit you then I will" and "I'm not in danger, I'm the danger" - which I guess was said in Breaking Bad but I don't think the girls knew that when they wrote Evolve. Thanks for the interesting analysis

I thought to consider is that now they are part of a label and the label may have something to say about lyrical content. I loved More, especially live, and after hearing the next two songs live HYCAD and Sick it's obvious to me that the next album has a lyrical theme of toxic relationships. That could be within human relations or substance abuse. That's my uneducated opinion.

Not only about toxic relationships, but (also in my own uneducated opinion) maybe also how individuals get into a rut, and make the same terrible destructive personal decisions over and over, and never reflect or learn from past mistakes. Can be about relationships, addictions, or anything else where you make decisions that perpetuate and even rationalize the cycle ("chaos drives me wild like an animal") while at the same time acknowledging the situation ("hell you call a dream") as well as clamoring for a way out of it ("give me something to believe").

I think that if the Warning had been brought up with a deeper notion and appreciation of their own Mexican musical heritage, their songwriting and singing style would have been even more deeper and would be more enriched. There has always been incredible songwriting in Mexico and i think if the Warning start incorporating some of that interpretation and composing style from which they seem disconnected from then they would indeed be even greater

Wonderful analysis! There's one dimension of their personal narrative tracks that, for me, separates them from every other band I've heard, going back to Joni Mitchell. They evoke such a strong emotional response in their listeners, at least those who've gone a ways down the rabbit hole. Me cry? Yep. Over and over. Like you, I love how their social commentary tracks make me think but, unfortunately, I doubt this, in itself, reaches those who just want great head banging music. Yes, I'm one of the "older" fans. Favorite lyric? At the end of this phrase from Money, "I'll never ask for forgiveness. I come with God as my witness. I pray he'll wash my hands." "I pray he'll wash my hands!?!" Who comes up with something like this? True genius.

I completely agree about their lyrics being thought provoking and about them being concerned about how social media and technology are impacting our society, that's consistently been a theme throughout their catalog. My favorite song would have to be D2D cuz that song is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time and Narcisista is up there as well. I can't really pick one favorite lyric but like I commented previously, KOOL AID KIDS, is a very relatable song to me cuz I try to be an independent thinker and not just follow the masses. The title track on the ERROR album has some of the most brilliant and clever lyrics I've heard and XXI Century Blood, the title track especially, has very wise social commentary too. I kind of agree with you about More cuz it's not my favorite song of theirs either but not because of the lyrics since they are still not very surface level imo.

My first take on More, Sick and HYCAD was they were nowhere as lyrically complex as earlier TW songs. I was likely biased because they did collaborate on those songs and I thought they were a step back from their own originals lyrically at least. I then had to remember it took me awhile to grasp the lyrical brilliance of TW when I first discovered them and was learning their songs. After reflection for a couple of weeks now I still maintain those songs are slightly less lyrically complex but maybe slightly more dynamically interesting while still maintaining a significant lyrical aptitude. It doesn’t have be a binary equation.

I agree about the lyric shift. I haven't heard a good audio of Sick and reading lyrics of HYCAD the verses don't make sense with the chorus to me. More is odd. Their other albums seem better, although Error has great songs (Animosity) and odd ones (Z). Just my opinion.

I think it is interesting that they would want to collaborate on songs, only because their songwriting is such a huge strength of theirs and they certainly don't NEED help. Not sure the motive, but I'm still thankful for new Warning music! I agree that the songs are still dynamic and enjoyable!

@@psychologyofrock I did too so it is hard to say they are lyrically great when you can't understand most of what they are saying. I think More and the other two are designed as crowd sing alongs to connect with the crowd. It is harder for fans to sing along with songs like Copper Bullets vs More. Which may connect with fans but limits the message to obscure metaphors.
@joeloveland6283
@joeloveland6283 8 ай бұрын
To expand a bit, for a comparison listen to More, than listen to The One, Stalker or Sacrifice, or Copper Bullets and see which one is more lyrically and musically complex or coherent. The more complex musically and hard hitting songs you would expect more mature artist would write were written when they were younger (and 100% independent) and the stuff that younger artist write and play is written now.

Some think that all personal songs come from the songwriters own experience's Pau actually got the idea for the song Amour from a scene in the movie Ratatouille. Where the main character ( a french rat) was watching to young human lovers ask the question. How much do you love me. To each other.Funny what can inspire a good song. The Warning likes to write in a way that as you said, lets people write their own narrative . As for the song more. People just didn't get what they were trying to convey. The song is about dealing with sometimes overwhelming feels when you want more of anything so much it starts to consume you. I agree that it may have fallen short of that goal. But also feel that the changes in style in the song is what really threw people. Maybe to the point of not taking in the meaning. Just my take on things. Respect as always.

I have to agree. At the risk of being called an obsessive fanboy. I think The Warning could become a historically important band in Rock music. For their songwriting and overall talent and showmanship. But even more because of the story. The way they have opened their live up to the fans. And used social media to promote themselves .The intelligent way they have taken part in the business end of their career and been a equal part of it with their manager and parents. And maybe most of all the way they have grown up to be such great role models. If i sound like a fanboy well then I guess I am one. Its just that I am 68 and started listening to rock at age 6. I love to try any music that comes along. But in 62 years I haven't seen anything close to the journey and results that these three young woman have had. hmm maybe I am a fanboy. I just hope to live to see next 10 years. It going to be a great ride. @@psychologyofrock
