The Wedge got SLAMMED by this swell. Got up at 4AM got to the beach and waited for enough light to start filming. Some Giant waves rolled through. About 9AM the wind got on it but it was INSANE waves while it lasted.
The Wedge is located in Newport Beach California. This wave is easily my favorite wave as it doubles in size on these south swells. This video was taken on May 17 2023. Will this cause some flooding?
Hope you Enjoy.

I went to College in Santa Barbara. We were out at Sands almost every morning for 2 years. I couldn't do a short board. I had an 8 foot Yater. But The Wedge scared the crap out of me. I was down there every other weekend boogie boarding with friends. Crazy how it breaks so close to the beach. 8-10 feet max but it breaks so hard and fast. And the under town was insane. Like someone grabbing your ankles and pulling you back under. I didn't argue with all the tans and skimpy bikinis. Orange Julius was awesome too.

Me and only 1 other went out on a day like this. The waves were 30 ft. My two friends that came with me didn't paddle out no crowd no life guards. You could've fit a school bus in the barrel!

In a geezervoice (okay I'm in my 50s) Interesting to see everybody in full suits. Back in my day we had to wait until mid July until the Big Souths started running. I only used to wear a short-sleeve springsuit. I considered it like riding Leathers for a motorcycle rider to protect my skin from abrasion.

@pringlized
@pringlized Жыл бұрын
Haha.. Thats a crazy day.. I would never go out there with those breaks. It should be 4-8 feet on a regular day only because of how shallow the ground is when wave comes in. The undertow is what scares me when it dumps you on the beach. Notice how everyone bails out back into the surf. Trust me. I got plenty of experience. It's an awesome day but you gotta pick your weather. Super fun and be smart and safe. The wedge is no joke. Ohh. And keep in mind. The ocean actually splits when i comes in. I think it comes in to the right ( from the ocean) but becuase of the jetty, it then breaks and comes back in from the right against itself. So there is a central area where the waves smash against each other. You don't want to be there until you've dropped into the tube 😅

@@rubberducky9925 Its an extremely fast breaking wave that breaks in 2-3 feet of water, sometimes less, with other dangers like backwash and the face of the wave completely mutilating and turning you into a projectile. Multiple people have broken bones and died.

But how was Newport Point doing on this day????? Grew up there in the 60's thru 80's, the Wedge was never surfed back then, some knee boarders, I used a red kick board and duck feet there. But when it was really on, 19th Street was THE wave.

@jarredtremain4644
@jarredtremain4644 Жыл бұрын
Just saw on another sites where they say surfers don't wear leashes at wedge because it makes you get dragged over falls when wiping out. That's ridiculous as wedge is almost always going to smash you. More dangerous to have board hit others than you getting dragged over, plus you come up without board and get smashed heaps more getting to beach to get board. If you can't handle the beating you shouldn't be out there.
@enthusiasticshark4904
@enthusiasticshark4904 Жыл бұрын
From what I heard, people don't use leashes as you'll just break it straight away plus the shorebreak will wash the board up for you anyway. I get what you mean though. Bodyboards should be fine but surfboards are a different story

@@BrentWeldon As a Floridian who's accustomed to yellow lifeguard flag if there's any waves at all, the plain yellow flags at the Wedge on vigorous days have come across as belonging to a different world, Then again, the shorebreak at Wabasso, Fla. was adequate training for Brad Domke. Video-watching (I tried to be at the Wedge with camera this week) is no substitute for the real thing, but I think a survey of Surfline before and after blackball would show bodyboarders catching lots more waves and doing more stuff than bodysurfers. Not to diss the incredible bodysurfers, some of the best anywhere.
