As for major Welsh people who influenced America/Canada - incuding Welsh Americans are people such as.... George Henry Thomas Joshua Humphreys Meriweather Lewis Daniel Boone Jesse and Frank James JP Morgan Harold Lloyd Murray Humphreys Frank Lloyd Wright Ginger Rodgers Rita Heyworth Bob Hope Zachary Levi John Goodman Carey Price Leslie Nielson If you look into it - The Welsh have had a massive influence on America, but it all gets sidelined for the English/Irish connection.

Another forgotten Welsh legend

Mad really that we are never taught this, despite him being such a prominent figure. Great that films like this bring it to light. Brilliant work.

Great video! I had no idea Bettws was linked to one of the most recognisable buildings in Los Angeles because of this man. I wonder why Welsh locals were never aware of him.

It's called being Welsh - Welsh people, for the most part, are clueless about their entire Countries History. They even believe the English lies about conquest and annexation. Wales was joined to England in peace time, not conquest. As the conquest laws were annuled in 1400 by Owain Glyndwr.

We only knew about this man when we were reading the information at the Griffith Observatory on a visit to LA three years ago

I'm not sure why it's not more widely known in Wales, although it may be to do with his worded past. Thanks a lot!

Lol Well I learnt two things, one the obvious, two theirs more than one Bettws... the one I live 60 seconds from in Newport and the one 40 minutes away the other side of Cardiff. Great to know about this amazing Welsh link!

Thanks very much for this amazing video! I would never have known, even though I have driven past Bettws hundreds of times on my way to Bridgend.

Lived in Bettws for 5 years between "76-"81 (west view , bottom site) it was different then , great growing up as a kid :) Anyone there in juniors between sep. 77 - july 81 ????

It's a real shame to see how desolate West Side is at the moment. SDo much potential for that land but I expect it will remain like that for many years to come.

Wow, so pleased I stumbled upon this today. I used to live in Bettws as a child but escaped when I was 18. Phenomenal piece of information about this legend from Bettws. Thanks for sharing the video. There should be more information about this man because this is some story. How did you find this out Chris? Filled me with nostalgia today. Thanks for sharing this Chris xxx

Hiya! Thanks so much for watching this, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I stumbled across this info accidentally whilst researching something else. I know the guy wasn't the best of characters but it is surprising that I pretty much grew up in Bettws and knew nothing about it. Thanks again for watching! x

@@whatchrisdoes thanks for taking the time to reply. I've passed this around a few Welsh people and nobody knew the story and I find this astonishing. Hard to believe a man from Bettws did all that but he clearly wanted to get as far away from Bettws as he could lol. I live in Edinburgh now and have done for 31 years. It's a fabulous place, more especially when the Welsh are here for the rugby. I miss the Welsh humour. All the best to you Chris and thanks again for posting this. Very interesting. Margaret xxx

Thanks for doing this, Chris. I am from Betws, but only in the past few years learned about Griffiths. I spent a lot of time in LA, at one time flying there every couple of months or so, and even got close to living there. Wish I knew then what I know now. Strange that in Llangeinor we had Richard Price, whose writings influenced the Founding Fathers and who was made an Honorary citizen of the fledgeling United States, and in Betws we had Griffiths, differently iconic on the west coast.

Hi Andrew, thanks so much for watching this. Growing up in Betws myself, I was totally unaware of the incredibly significant history that was on our doorstep until many years after I left. It was a real pleasure to learn about this and share my findings with past and present residents of our little village. Diolch eto!

I care - Chris, are you still based in South Wales? CAn you come and see me at Valley and Vale Community Arts - we are in Bettws behind the Oddfellows pub. I have just been working in the Primary school and the other schools in the Garw exploring a famous circus family who came to Pontycymmer in the 1910's. Would love to talk to you more about this.

What a small world. How long did you live at number 23 for? I saw that it was fire damages, I hope no one was hurt.

needs more public knowledge of this, yes his crime was bad but if it wasnt for him there would be far less in LA than there is now
