2 жыл бұрынThe White Trim Trail in Canyonlands National Park just outside Moab Utah is a bucket list trail for most overlanders. Scenic views, beautiful red rock country, and over 100 miles of remote desert travel are just a few of my favorite things about it. I was lucky enough to join my friend Brent Smith from Forgotten Waypoints for two days on the trail. This is part one of our trip from the Shafer Switchbacks up Murphys Hogback.

For someone who has lived all his life in cornfields, southern Utah is like going to the moon. Our one big family vacation was spent out there. It inspired my then 13-year-old son to put out a CD with 18 songs. Thanks for the Images makes me wish we were there again.

Every time I watch one of your videos I’m jealous that you live in such a scenic area with so much public land. I love that you get out there as much as you do. You would really enjoy having a refrigerator. I know people saying “it’s a game changer” is cliche, but it’s really true.

As always Jarod, a great video that took me down memory lane and wanting more. We've done White Rim twice now and it doesn't get old. Unfortunately living in Victoria BC we can only get down once a year and with Covid we haven't been able to get back down for 2 years now. The desert is calling. Hopefully our plan for Mojave Road and Death Valley end of March next year will be possible.

Did this trail in June 2021...Loved it but I would never go back in the summer. It was 111 during the day and about 93 all night. But the trail and the camping was great!

I want to go that direction next time. I’ve gone east to west twice now and think going the other direction would be a lot of fun and a beautiful way to change up the trip. I also like several of the campsites on that side a bit better.

Another great video Jared. I like that the folks you roll with don't have logos all over their rigs but seems like all but one is lacking some color. That red 4Runner shows up nicely in the videos.

Watching your vid has me so excited, one more week and I'll be headed out there from Ohio in my F250. Gonna be doing quite a few trails including White Rim. I'll be staying the night at one of the Potato bottom sites. And of course I've been watching the weather out there and it's been much cooler there this week, lower 80s and even high 70s. Just in time for my trip it's gonna be back into the high 90s, not good for a Northern Ohio boy lol, even though it's been hot and super humid here all summer. At least night time temps will be more comfortable.

@@BackroadExploration Well unfortunately White rim was a bust. The night I reserved Potato bottom, there were thunderstorms and flash flood warnings and ended up cancelling after I talked with the rangers. They highly recommended to cancel since that was my camp site. They ended up having many people cancel. She showed me photos from the last time they got heavy rains like that and the washouts were huge. Oh well just means I gotta go back lol. I would rather do it in good weather anyways so I can see the views. I did end up checking it out from above in the park though in the rain. At least that was the only crappy day.

Shoot! I’m glad you were able to at least check a few things out. Those washouts can be a big problem so it sounds like you made the right decision!

Nice. I did the rock entry section and learned rock is not smooth it beats the hell put of you. Drove a D6 11 miles over it when working BLM. AZ STRIP. 87 degrees no AC. Got out threw up. Ol Dan Melin thought it was funny. Send newbie over 11 miles of rock.

Nice views, great edits! Hey man, my truck is pretty stock, including tires. She’s rolling on Michelin Defender TLX tires… do you think I can do both trails with these tires? Truck has a 1-ish inch lift and is 4WD

Awesome video! I’ve got a trip booked in August and want to pull an OPUS OP4 trailer. Thoughts on the level of difficulty of towing an off-road trailer?

That’s a tough question. The trail is not hard so pulling a trailer would not be an issue. However there are several very steep narrow sections where if you ran into traffic coming the other way things would be dicey. Other than those sections it would be totally doable as long as it was not slick.

I am SO SAD that I can’t do this in my Outback Wilderness. I have a Jeep that is built, but even with the low 70k miles on it, my girl is a 2005 model and that just isn’t going to make the 2k+ miles trip to Moab (not to mention the other 3k miles to finish the trip). I have a month off in March/April and I REALLY wanted this one 😭 Like…it looks amazing. Unless I’m mistaken, I read AWD is not allowed.

It’s an incredible trip. You may consider renting a 4x4 and running it if you can get a permit.

Nice video ! I’m doing white rim at the end of June and I can’t wait. I have a few question. I am doing the loop clockwise. Starting at island in the sky visitor Center and finishing to mineral bottom. 1 : I already reserved a campsite at Murphys Hogback campsite A. How much time do I need to plan to get to the campsite? 2- I was thinking of taking an other campsite either Hardscrabble bottom or labyrinth. Is it worth it or it’s possible to do the rest of the loop in a day ? 3- I have a stock 2021 Toyota Tacoma off road with crawl control. Will i be fine with it or should I get a jeep rental ? Depending on how often you stop and for how long I suspect 5-8 hours. If you stop and do hikes perhaps more. I’ve ran it twice. This time time we stopped at the last campsite on the way out. We could have just kept going bit we were not in a rush. If you can get a permit for an extra night I recommend it. Just to have more time on the trail. You can easily do the rest of the loop if you can’t get a permit. Your Tacoma will be fine!

Great video! Very informative. I have a couple questions for you: 1. How far do you think we can get in one day out and back? We want to get to at least monument basin, plus lathrop canyon. We also want enough time to take in the views. Is this possible in one day out and back? 2. How technical is lathrop canyon? We have no experience with 4x4 roads of any kind. We have experience on gravel roads and unpaved roads, but not any rock crawling. Can we take a rental Jeep down there easy enough? 3. Can we swim in the Colorado river? How fast is the current? Thanks!

1. You can make it to Lathrope and back in a day for sure. Stop at the bottom have lunch then back out. 2. It’s not very technical. The first bit is steep and narrow with a few switch backs then the rest of the way is unless it’s wet you should have no trouble in a rental Jeep. 3. You can. I jumped in to cool off at the bottom of Lathrop canyon. I You can’t just float in place but it’s not fast enough there to be swept away.

Yes. But it will be a long day. A few years ago I did the trip and we stayed at White Crack Campground. We made it from Moab to White Crack with time to spare before dark. It was in February and we were filming. If you start early do lunch in Lathrop and the. Head to Monument Basin and back is doable in my opinion.

Nice. I only made it to Muscle Man Arch so not very far- still nice though. We did it after Shafer Trail- and still made it back to town in time for some Gilbertos! We would like to camp overnight there next time- possibly March. Is there a particularly good spot you recommend for camping- or just anywhere?

You can only camp at designated sites. Which require a permit and can be a little tough to get during the busy seasons. I have camped at White Crack, Candlestick and Labryinth. I have stopped to checkout most of the other sites. I think If I were doing 3 nights three days I would try to visit White Crack, Hardscrable, or Potato Bottom.

@@BackroadExploration Thanks. I assume it is all fully exposed. How long would it take to complete without staying over? Can it be done between sunrise and sunset all in one full day?

Most of the sites are completely exposed no shade at all. Potato Bottom and Hardscrabble are close to the river and have some trees. It is doable in one day. I’d account for at least 12-14 hours and that includes no stopping to take in the views and not hitting Any if the hikes or overlooks. I highly recommend breaking it out across 4 days 3 nights. That way you have time to really take it all in if possible.

The first time I did it was late February and it was great. Good weather almost no one on the trail. If you can get Whitecrack the campsite do! It’s well worth it.

@@BackroadExploration white crack was actually full already. I did it last year at the exact same time of year and camped at white crack and it was literally just me. Same exact dates just one year later. Full. Staying at Gooseberry. I go in on the mineral bottom side.

We spent around 10 hours on the trail. But took our time site seeing and filming. The whole trail can be driven in 12 hours. I’d plan for 3-5 hours of driving per day pending on how many you are staying.

Is this trail possible for a 2015 F-150 with a small lightweight truck camper? I really want to go on this trail and camp for the night. I have done black bear pass in my truck without the camper. Not new to off-roading at all. Trail looks pretty straightforward. Is there any tricky spots?

Yes. There are some tight switchbacks but nothing that can’t be done.

Any idea if there are any parts of this trail on BLM land that don't require planning ahead for a permit? We know the week we're going to be in Moab, but would prefer to keep an open schedule, because hey, that's why we like to take these kinds of trips, right?

No parts of the White Rim trail are on BLM land. There are a few areas before accessing the trail that are on BLM land. Most still have some camping rules or restrictions. You could get a day permit and run the whole thing. Very long day. Or just drive in 30 or so miles and then back out. Having said that if you do not want to deal with the inflexibility of permits I’d suggest just exploring other areas. There’s so much in that area.

Cool video, I must say I have no idea why anyone would want to run a manual transmission off or on road with our current technology. The advantages just don't exist anymore.

Mostly because they are fun to drive and on technical trails you really feel a sense of accomplishment. I'll often stop like Jared did and figure out how I'm going to tackle a section of road. Another reason is with old trucks manuals are less trouble than automatics. Lastly, current technology is in newer cars and newer cars cost more money than I'm interested in paying. But hey, variety is the spice of life, drive what makes you happy and gets you on the trail.

My previous Jeep was a manual and I enjoyed driving it. I was planning to go automatic with this one but the price and mileage were right.

@@BackroadExploration Don't get me wrong, I love driving a manual, but I live in Southern California. Driving a manual on our freeways is a nightmare when the traffic is heavily congested. I had a manual Jeep many years ago and it was a blast but my Land Rover Discovery 2 with an automatic and traction control is just so much easier on the type of trails I run and it is a pleasure to drive on the freeways.
