Worked with this group several times. Had a party at the promoters house I worked for for them, even brought in pin ball machines. We set a record time for load in, set up for a stadium show once, and only once, with them. What normally took 5 days to build we did in 16 hours. Never been done that fast before. I've never heard of anyone doing it that fast again, for any stadium show. One of the better outfits to work with.

Keeping those rods feeding right kept you on your toes. I know I'd done it many times. Xenons started replacing them, especially for really long throws. ;0)

I LOVED the original (non-lyric) video that was released with the song. That video had the band in a stadium, during set-up and sound-check. The music starts playing on a reel-to-reel tape player, the drums get adjusted, Roger Daltry walks out of a limo and onto the stage, and then Pete Townsend steps-up to the mic. That video footage really enhance the song for me!

Yeah. Great video with the live film. I'm not too keen on hearing what the guy who made this fan video thinks the song's about either. And I think Pete was being a little flippant with his comment about the coke.

A put on is an attempt to deceive. "You're putting me on!" is what you might say to someone who you think just lied to you. An eminence front is a put on of greatness for yourself that you want others to see, but in reality it's all fake. It's just a front. Top 10 Who song.

Pete Townsend is a songwriter extraordinaire! In my top five songwriters of our generation. He has a really nice share of solo work that is outstanding, as well. A "put on" is basically fake, often was used in the context of "you're putting me on" same as "yanking my chain".

Great song. This 'shuffle' is so cool. The Who is one of my top bands. Personally, I think Phil Collins is one of rocks best drummers and I read he once said "The Who is the only band I would leave Genesis to join" (Keith Moon was one of his drumming idols) I can totally hear Phil getting into this beat. Collins had very good taste. Knowing he held The Who in such regard only raised my estimation of him. The Who was a class act. Wish I could have seen them live.

Yeah, bro and sis, that's my theme song right there! This tune is just so perfect--everything about it. People have commented on the intro guitar, but the outtro is equally amazing. Pete puts so many quarter and half rests (and I think a couple full rests) in the last 8 measures, that makes it difficult to play, never mind sing at the same time. This tune has meaning on so many levels. In fact, our legal system here in Amerika is the epitome of an "eminence front," since it certainly is a "put on." Townsend's message of this song is that people who are high on drugs are not their true selves. People around them get a different personality, not what is the authentic person. They put up a front to be acceptable in social situations. And maybe Townsend believes that at the time of him writing the song drug use, in society, has gone off the rail, is out of control. This is the last leg or latter chapter of the great Who band, they are really a 60's and 70's band that, like The Rolling Stones, just won't stop, but their height is over, this is, I believe an early 80's song, might be very late 70's but I think it's 80's. I love it, it's not "old men drudgery", this is hit song material and it was a Top 40 hit in most European countries. The music sounds quintessential Who, but it also has a refreshed sound and a perfect sound with which you would see and feel The Who entering the new decade. With a strong rolling repeating musical riff, it has the right vibe and rhythm, sounds great on Radio. On top the song has several interesting guitar entries and additions and some other interesting musical tid-bits. The lyrical theme is very relevant for the time. As usual from The Who, this is for me a great song. I don't own the album, maybe I'll buy it now.

I think the "dress to kill" has two meanings going on. Like, they are partying and dressing up in their best and most flashy swag, but they are also dressing theirselves up with substances that are killing them

Eminence: A lofty, stand-out position of Superiority. Front: A projection or presentation? Like an intentional desert mirage.

Lex... The "put on", is you are putting on a show... "Dressed to Kill", means you are going out to have a night on the town.. Get drunk, and get lucky.... Either by singing, or dancing, you can also put on a show, to reveal talents..

Brad read while that hot intro was playing. Lex was just vibing to that hot intro. That's why I love their reactions. I mean Lex is pretty good at deciphering meanings in the moment, but Brad had an edge from the start. Anyway, it's not a competition and this is my favorite song from the Who. Basically rich folk glide through life ignoring the consequences. Some poor people do too but for the rich it hits different.

Your sorely mistaken imo. Love Reign O’er Me; We Won’t Get Fooled Again; The Real Me ( unequalled bass performance by the Ox) are all better for one reason or another.

@@tefalhead7396 Won’t Get Fooled is mine specifically for Roger’s scream at the end. Plus Keith Moon goes ape shit throughout. The whole thing is for him one big fill.

Lex is right. The song is about people pretending to be more than there are or to have more than they do. They are keeping up with the Jones. In the 80’s we used to say someone was putting on a front or “fronting”.
