I once read that this song was written "at the last minute" to fill in time on an album. Ah, the greatness of Pete T.

A great song by The Who that I vividly remember listening to as a hit on AM radio station WLS out of Chicago when I was around 7 or 8 years old I believe. I didn’t know until years later when I was a teenager playing Behind Blue Eyes in my rock band that a favorite song as a little boy was from the Who! Great choice!!!

CLASSIC early Who! Great song! Right, the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" is one of the hardest, most psychedelic, controlled chaos songs ever written. Well worth a listen. Thanks for your reaction to this classic.

Pete lost all faith in the music buying public when this song didn’t got to number one. I tend to agree. In fact, I don’t believe the Who ever had a number one hit (in the UK at least). Shameful

Forgot how great this song was! The Who rocked us back in the 60s. BTY Pete's last name Townshend the h is silent and is pronounced Towns-end.

Another of my many fave Who tracks. BTW, you were right the first time, it's pronounced Towns End, the H is silent.

I think the opening track to this LP, Armania - City in the Sky (written by Thunderclap Newman) is heavier than this song. This is a "concept" LP in that it is set as an afternoon of listening to the radio, ads/PSA and all - all written by the band, all running together like listening to the radio. It is also the precursor to the Tommy LP with many songs about the 5 senses. The last track, Rael, is the backstory of Tommy's dad. This is not the original LP release of the song.

The song that inspired Paul McCartney to write Helter Skelter...

You said Marilyn Manson instead of Charles Manson. It’s ok. I knew what you meant. This album is really cool. In line with the title of the album, they wrote songs about commercial products. Like the deodorant and the beans. Pretty funny. Love this song. They do have two versions of a song called ‘Mary Ann with the Shaky Hand’ on this album. Guess what that’s implying.

Helter Skelter is associated with the Charles Manson murders, one of which was Roman Polanski's wife Sharon Tate. It is a horrifying and fascinating story.
