I can't help feeling that the divots in the wingtips were a deliberate design feature to ensure that lights were visible over exactly 180° taking into account the bulb height. The flat surface makes for easy mounting and a weathertight seal.

Just a correction: AI14R is Russian engine used in many airplanes such as Yak12 or Yak18. Some of these engines were assembled in PZL Kalisz (Poland) and transfered to PZL Warszawa-Okecie where Wilga was build. It looks like you have an older version of PZL 104 Wilga 35 running on original Russian AI14RA (Anatolij Ivchenko Radial engine version 14). Polish assembled version would be AI14R on PZL 104 Wilga 80 with huge exhaust silencers. From the year of 2000 new version of PZL 104 Wilga 2000 came out with American made Lycoming O-540. There was short production cycle and majority of these planes ended up in USA and Canada as a perfect 4 seat bush planes. These Russian AI14RA engines are indestructible, planes made in 1047 are still flying these original engines. They seems to be running forever... I love Wilgas, I was trained on them and I do not know any other plane that is so easy to fly and forgiving, even C-152 is more demanding...

I installed the M-14PF myself. Pretty sure I know what engine was on my own airplane.
@michaelksiezopolski
@michaelksiezopolski 4 жыл бұрын
@@flycory In that case this was not certified PZL 104 35/80 Wilga but its experimental version. As far as I know, only a few Wilgas in the USA were converted with this engine as originally it was used in Yakovlewv and Sukhoi airplanes as well as some experimental American Aircraft such as Murphy Moose and Pitts Model 12. But generally, this engine was not installed on certified planes.

The engine AI 14R was not assembled but produced in Kalisz under licence from Soviet Union. The engine ist taken from amercan engine Wright Cyclon R-1820.
@michaelksiezopolski
@michaelksiezopolski 11 ай бұрын
@@piotrgrzywacz144 OK, the engine was produced and assembled in Kalisz. It was based on Cyclon R-1820 and modified so the original parts would not fit the Russian version. Most of the Russian technology during communism was backwards engineered from the West (Not just the USA) so what? Czechoslovakia was also producing staff stolen from wester countries and stuff under Russian license, I thought it was obvious to the whole world! AK47 in several versions were produced in Lucznik, Poland or in DDR or Czechoslovakia. The first series of IA14R for Wilga 35 was only assembled in Poland before Poland obtained a license from the USSR to produce and modify the engine - Just for you to know!

Bill Kennnedy passed on your link to me. I sent him the link to Draco's first bush flight and he almost fell off his chair when he saw Mike reverse pitch into the hangar. He showed me some photos of your Wilga in the hangar getting rebuilt. The Wilga Beast is quite the bird. Views over southern Utah were fabulous, that is the way to see it. I almost purchased a used Rans S-6 but there was no place to hangar it. My pockets are not deep enough anyway. I did purchase a bush plane that is more affordable, the E-Flite Timber STOL RC aircraft. Came with a set of floats as well. I have a couple Sony action cams I can mount to it for aerial footage. Fun can still be had. Carry on, Flying Cowboys. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

Wilga is such an odd looking plane. I think that's why I like it so much. You took the baffle out of the front of the engine. Getting too warm? What's the flight time from your airport to Moab? Just the perfect place to fly low and slow. Your hanger in Ogden air port? Lived in the area for quite sometime.

I was wondering if you could go into what it’s like to own one. Useful load living with the radial engine and any quirks to the Wilga. I know you sold this years ago but I would love to get your insight.
@flycory
@flycory Жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. What it's like to own a Wilga... You will have greasy pants and shoes. It leaks. I changed mine to the M-14PF engine as my home airport is based at roughly 4,500MSL. The AI-14 Engine just didn't pull well above anything higher than 3000'DA for me. With that new engine, performance was legendary. I did keep the same operating limitations relating to speeds and weight and balance. So with the new engine being a bit heavier, the useful load was very limited. But I flew it light like a bushplane so I didn't mind. And I could still outperform much lighter aircraft. It is not an intuitive airplane to operate. One must respect the unique operation of the engine and the flight characteristics. The airplane flies the way it looks - it's unique. Takeoff and landing is easily accomplished once you get used to how the airplane behaves with the trailing link gear. It sort of squats and leans dramatically, and one must understand how it's going to behave. But it's not difficult to master. NEVER land with ANY side load or you WILL ground loop. You will do an hour of maintenance for every hour you fly. Yes, it's not great. No parts are available so anything that fails you have to make it or modify the aircraft to accept something else. If you can find parts, the wilga culture seems to be quite shady and difficult to work with. Not sure why that is, but it's not a good representation of humanity. Overall, it's a fantastic airplane that didn't get the right engine (should have been the M-14 all along). Ownership is not recommended honestly. But I remain a huge fan of the airplane itself.

Was thinking a good inline 6 turbo, such as the Ford Barra engine would be good for this aircraft. With a billet aluminium block and cooling system in the wings it would be lighter and more powerful than the engine you are running. 300-325KW take off power up to 4500 metres.
