I'm pruning up the Winnard Jade, a Crassula ovata that was given to me by Scott Winnard of the KZfaq channel "Lets Do Bonsai". I've had this Jade since Aug 2021.

Beautiful, evocative video Nigel, your becoming quite the film editor. Loved the jade pruning lesson up until 8:30....I couldn't believe you did that! Why am I not able to be that courageous.... visionary - I usually mince around making my little cuts ✂️ but you're like a master painter making savage, slashing strokes! I will try to be more Nigel-like this year. Ps. Socotra Island..... 🏝

That cutting might make a nice mini bonsai. Pruning will bring out some nice spring growth.

Wow! That’s gonna be interesting to watch. Don’t know if I have the nerve for such an operation. Thanks for the response to my email this week about my jade, and it’s ugly stumped root. Maybe that trees future will look similar to this……. Yikes

They usually do fine as long as you keep them dry until they start to grow again!!

Loved that opening Nigel, is amazing how a little background music adds drama to a scene lol. It sounded like there was a drone race in the greenhouse every time the sun was shining bright 🚁.

Not long ago you showed some pictures of bonsai with unnaturally wide old trunks. Maybe you were commenting something about wiring. On this one I see that a very wide low trunk (a real "monster") might be interesting. At first look I didn't see many Jade bonsais of that kind in Google. There is no absolute right in questions of style issues, like I'm sure you have said many times too. So, maybe a low bulky look for this one? I was sooo happy that you left the lowest little shoot untouched. Those little leaves are so cute and the shoot is so "deliciously" green. I'm glad that Jades grow fast. We get to see development soon.

As long s the soil is dry enough, they can take freezing temps if it doesn't freeze too hard.

Hi Nigel. Awesome video as always! You mention that you kept this tree in your basement in winter. Do you have plenty of light in your basement, or can some species thrive even without light in the colder months? I'm asking because I have limited space indoors that receives enough light, but I'd like to get a few more trees that can go outside during the warmer months. Being able to put them into the basement during winter would be quite handy. It only goes down to about 15 C down there, but I only have a tiny north facing window.

I do have lights above the trees, but the colder the trees are, the less light they need. My trees are at 10 C and I just have a LED shop light above them and they do fine.
