it breaks my heart that more people aren’t realizing this movie is based off Roald Dahl’s masterpiece The Witches!! it’s not simply a remake of the 1990 The Witches, although that movie is amazing (YES I KNOW THEY MENTIONED IT IN THE VIDEO THREE TIMES BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE OPNELY IGNORED IT PLEASE STOP SAYING THIS IN MY REPLIES I KNOW)

It’s like they’re not even trying to traumatize children anymore.

Plot Twist: This is the prequel to Ratatouille.

The original was a literal child's horror movie. Be that as it may, we couldn't get enough. As a kid my siblings and I would watch it daily on VHS.

This actually looks quite enchanting. I'm a little scared to see what the witches will look like when not pretending to be human. The first Witches made them look absolutely grotesque. Here's hoping they'll be even more terrifying here. Since this looks like it isn't made from Disney, maybe they can be a little less child friendly. You know, like all Roald Dahl children books are. Time to traumatize a new generation ( His book The Magic Finger freaked me out as a child).

I'm only here for Anne Hathaway finally portraying a villain.

I have loved octavia Spencer for so long in the small roles I saw her in over the years. Whatever it was she could do it and make it memorable even just a few lines. It makes me so happy for her to be getting these big roles now.

The witches, george's marvelous medicine, matilda and charlie and the chocolate factory are the best roald dahl books. He was such a genius story teller and he is one of those rare writers that truly can get children into reading books more. I know my love for reading came from his books.

God I just couldn’t imagine this movie without Mai Zetterling in one of her final roles. She was absolutely intense and real. The ending words between her and The Grand High Witch are epiiiiic. “No, no next time. THIS time, it’s YOUR TURN!” Got chills just remembering it.

This book was what made me genuinely excited about learning to read as a child. I read it more times than I can recall because I loved this story so much. Imagine my excitement when I realized Roald Dahl had written lots of books just as magical as this one. Long story short; this is why I'm a librarian today. I'm excited to see a reimagining

The scene where they're taking off their wigs looks tame compared to the nightmare fuel scene in the 90s version of The Witches

The cast is great but my heart dropped when I saw the CGI in the Grand High Witch's reveal. The original scene with Anjelica Huston was amazingly horrific, as she slowly peeled away her face, to reveal the monstrosity underneath. Prove me wrong movie! I really want to love this.

I'm still scarred from watching the original when I was just a kid. Had some creepy painting of a girl who aged in it as time went by and was at a different place in the painting everyday until she died. What imma supposed to do with that as a kid??? Never visit an art gallery... that's for sure

After scanning the comments section: "These folks need to chill! It's just a movie." I have not seen the first one but based on the reactions, it must have been a really great movie. It is better to think of them as two movies that share the same title, I guess. (English is not my native language, bear with me.) Now off to find the classic "The Witches" everyone is talking about! Woop! Edit: I have seen the classic version. It was fantastic! It was not scary for me though probably because I am already an adult but it was a delight watching it. I am still looking forward for the 2020 version. I think, it will be fun to watch not for the sake of comparing the two but to simply enjoy the movie itself. Ya know, everyone's hating and loving this movie, but I think it looks pretty good. Yes its lacking the "scary", but that terrified me as a child, still can't watch the witch transform. I love the actors I've seen so far, I mean, Stanley's in it! Yes, I know the CGI and mice are really bad, but it looks comedic, and more " child friendly". This is the first remake in years that I've actually wanted to watch.

How did writers like Mr. Dahl know kids needed such fantasy and silliness when life hits hard? I think of a teen I love...his mom died when he was five. I met him when he was seven. He crawled under a bush and cried when he found out. Breaks my heart every time I think about it. His mom would be proud of him today.

No kids movie today has the courage to SCARE kids as they used to. Angelica Houston transformation in the original haunted my dreams for years.

It’s sad how no one here cares about Robert Zemeckis here. This person made Back To the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbits and Forest Gump, y’all. Just because it doesn’t have the grotesque imageries of the 90s, it doesn’t mean that this’ll suck

I like the 1980's version of "The Witches". In this version the witches are still pretty and they can float or fly and when the kids transform they look CGI. Not to fond of this version. Don't get me wrong, I love Anne Hathaway. She's a wonderful actress but I can't see her playing The Grand High Witch.

The Witches 90s movie TERRIFIED ME as a child and I still can't look at them without wincing! This really looks good and pretty exciting as well! I can't wait to see what the Witches look, I wonder (and hope) they're going full horror prosthetics NOT CGI.

Even the most grotesque horrors don't scare most people now. Plus, you're all likely adults and you were first introduced to this story as children. You've probably been exposed to it several times. Ever consider that maybe, it's just not as easy to scare you as it used to be?
