This special should have been called "Thanksgiving Dinner at Your Great Aunt's House"

I fondly remember staying up to watch Roseanne the sitcom with my parents thinking I was being badass. The show was groundbreaking at the time. It covered issues like class, women's issues, poverty, racism, childhood and much more. This comedy special just shows that she did *NOT* carry that show. God bless writers and directors.

I think any comedian that adds stuff like "omg I'm gonna be canceled" automatically kills their jokes lmfao

Here's the thing. When Rosanne originally aired, her character (and I'd like to believe, Rosanne herself) was the voice for those without power. She spoke up for women, the working class, minorities, and was a shining example of promoting her own autonomy. She was loud and brass, but there was a genuine caring for others under it all. She made sure those who hurt others were made to feel uncomfortable. Now she's the one feeling uncomfortable. In her mind (and I'm sure, my parents as well) there's no conceivable universe where she's become the oppressor she fought so hard against in her youth. Personal growth means giving up a little piece of yourself. It's admitting you were wrong about something and moving forward. For whatever reason, Rosanne and those like her refused to see beyond their initial concepts of right and wrong. Refused to budge an inch, because that was losing. It was giving away all their hard earned rights. They're not capable of seeing past their own bruised ego. So it's 2023 and Rosanne is trying to connect with this lost caravan of humanity. They're just so misunderstood and feel so helpless in this world that wants to hurt them. They're so mired in cognitive dissonance that they can't see how they're the ones hurting everyone around them. And maybe they wonder on some deep level about their choices. Maybe that's why they hate themselves so damn much that the only response is one of hate. They hurt everyone, including themselves, and they have no fucking clue. You're right. This special sounds pathetically unfunny. In her defense, I don't think she was even playing for laughs. She's asking, no, begging for people to tell her she's right. That she's still on the winning side. That she's not the shitty person she feels like inside.

It's so weird because the show Roseanne was a fairly liberal show.

This doesn't really seem like a comedy show. It's more like a fox News Ted talk.

Rosanne's comedy special screams of the rebel teenaged runway who wants to stick it to their parents. Except replace parents with the media and the rebel teenager is a desperate old lady who wants attention after being cancelled.

This is the curse of all successful comedians. You get so rich, old, and privileged that you completely fall out of touch with your audience.

The 80s were full of toxic comedy. I was a teen, and I would laugh at anything inappropriate. I still do. But...If a joke is made to hurt someone or a group of people, then its lazy. Therefore not funny (edit: opinion). Everybody could be a comedian if the goal were to pick the lowest hanging fruit. I believe the comedian can make fun of anything. But they themselves have to show that they are vulnerable too. Making fun of themselves. Much of comedy is pointing out the absurd. And nothing could be more absurd than people. People are allowed to laugh at anyting. I'm allowed to judge a person based on what they laugh at. But if I have to watch Jim Breuer act like a cockatoo one more time...

I get the awkward sensation that Roseanne's frustration with the Me Too movement is having never been included in it.

I'm just stunned that she sounds like she just read this set for the first time when she got on stage. Sure she was never great with line delivery, she was always lucky that she had a great cast working around her natural personality, but this is absolutely awful.

This was rough. I'm not on board with any political side talking point. The MeToo movement was such bullshit and effected real victims. Sure it might raise awareness of abuse but people abused this movement on people that didnt deserve that label
