Cheers to Ali for joining! Was rather trippy having the legendary BBC interviewer stroll into the studio having watched him interview living legends for many years now. From an emotional interview with Harrison Ford and a hilarious meme filled chat with Tom Cruise, to joking about with Zendaya and Emma Stone, you can watch Ali over on BBC Radio 1: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/padhl8KHv5u8gZc.htmlsi=fkyng4W0vHueeATn

9:10 This is actually true. The main rotor will continue to spin as you descend, creating a bunch of drag and slowing you down. You won't be able to control direction if the whole thing fails but if it is just the motor then there is a good chance that even that will still work. It is the same principle as Maple Seeds (Whirligig)

This past April I did pretty much the same route. Hiked the Nakasendo starting in Magome with stops at Tsumago, Kiso-Fukashima, and ending in Narai. Got rained on my way up to the Naria Torii pass and dealt with some snow, but it did add to the scenery. Tsumago is a beautiful preserved town. Had a great time at this is Izakaya called Chikara in Fukushima that's ran by a mother and son. The mother loved having English speakers as guests even though she didn't speak much English. Had a jolly time speaking with some people from Ireland. Matsumoto City was probably the biggest surprise for me. All I knew was that I had to catch a bus from there to go to Takayama. Ended up spending the afternoon there. The view of the Japan Alps from inside the station was beautiful. The castle was surprising enjoyable. I just really loved the vibe of the city. I really want to go back and hike one of the near by mountains and enjoy one of the onsen towns in the area. Also the drive from Kanazawa to Kyoto was fun too with a couple stops at mountain temples in Fukui.

There was this show on discovery ages ago called seconds from disaster (I think that's where I saw it on at least) and they actually showed a helicopter where the pilot just turned off the engine mid-air and it gently lowered to the ground. He could still steer it and everything.

Also splurged on the Park Hyatt for a night on my visit last year. Definitively a 5 star experience. Was disappointed though that the New York Bar doesn't actually have a bar, there is a long table that they filmed just on the one side like it was a bar. Beautiful view at night though.

Me and my kiddos, ages 24, 22 and 20 went last spring and climbing to the monkey park I was struggling. I had to stop several times only to be surpassed by a pregnant woman and a woman in her 70's....the amount of shame I still feel is embarrassing. The monkeys are definitely worth it however! It is 100% the nicest culture....we did Disneysea and I cannot ever do the American parks again, it ruined me! lol

I can honestly say Ive never heard of Ali but that's because I haven't listened to Radio 1 since the "Legendary" Mark & Lard left 20 years ago in 2004. I spent many an hour listening too "Mark & the boy Lard" & Mark Kermode was the Radio 1 Film Critic for Mark & lard's "Graveyard Shift" show back in 1993 & then moved onto Simon Mayo's R1 show. The 2 have been paired together ever since to this day. Still working today and is know as Britain's leading Film Critic & the Film Critic for BBC News too this day. Here for anyone who doesn't know & who hasn't heard of Mark Kermode is his Film critic history. More information can also be found on his own website. ----------- Kermode began his film career as a print journalist, writing for Manchester's City Life, and then Time Out and NME in London. He has subsequently written for a range of publications including The Guardian, The Observer, The Independent, Vox, Empire, Flicks, 20/20, Fangoria, Video Watchdog and Neon.[18] Kermode began working as a film broadcaster on LBC in 1988, after which he moved to BBC Radio 5 (later rebranded as 5Live). Between February 1992 and October 1993, he was the resident film reviewer on BBC Radio 5's Morning Edition with Danny Baker. He became the film critic for BBC Radio 1 in 1993, on a regular Thursday night slot called Cult Film Corner on Mark Radcliffe's Graveyard Shift session.[19] He later moved to Simon Mayo's BBC Radio 1 morning show. He hosted a movie review show with Mary Anne Hobbs on Radio 1 on Tuesday nights called ClingFilm.[20] From 2001 until 2022, Kermode reviewed and debated new film releases with Mayo on the BBC Radio 5 Live show Kermode and Mayo's Film Review.[21][22] The programme won Gold in the Speech Award category at the 2009 Sony Radio Academy Awards on 11 May 2009.[23] On 11 March 2022, it was announced by Simon Mayo, at the start of Kermode and Mayo's Film Review, that the last episode would be broadcast on 1 April 2022. Kermode and Mayo launched a non-BBC film and television podcast called Kermode & Mayo's Take in May 2022. Kermode has worked on film-related documentaries including The Fear of God; 25 Years of The Exorcist,[24] Hell on Earth: The Desecration and Resurrection of Ken Russell's The Devils, Alien: Evolution,[25] On the Edge of Blade Runner,[26] Mantrap: Straw Dogs - The Final Cut, Shawshank: The Redeeming Feature, The Poughkeepsie Shuffle: Tracing the French Connection, Salo: Fade to Black, The Real Linda Lovelace [27] and The Cult of The Wicker Man.[28] From 2001 to 2005, Kermode reviewed films each week for the New Statesman.[29] Prior to becoming chief film critic in 2013, he wrote "Mark Kermode's DVD round-up" for The Observer, a weekly review of the latest releases.[30] He also writes for the British Film Institute's Sight and Sound magazine.[31] From 1995 to 2001, Kermode was a film critic and presenter for Film4 and Channel 4, presenting the weekly Extreme Cinema strand. He has written and presented documentaries for Channel 4 and the BBC,[18] and until 2023 appeared on The Film Review for BBC News at Five.[32] For BBC Two's The Culture Show, Kermode hosted an annual "Kermode Awards" episode, which presented statuettes to actors and directors not nominated for Academy Awards that year.[33] In 2002, Kermode challenged the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), the censor for film in the UK, about its cuts to the 1972 film The Last House on the Left.[34] In 2008, the BBFC allowed the film to be re-released uncut.[35] He has since stated that the BBFC do a good job in an impossible situation and expressed his approval of their decisions.[citation needed] In a 2012 Sight & Sound poll of cinema's greatest films, Kermode indicated his ten favourites, a list later published in order of preference in his book Hatchet Job, as The Exorcist, A Matter of Life and Death, The Devils, It's a Wonderful Life, Don't Look Now, Pan's Labyrinth, Mary Poppins, Brazil, Eyes Without a Face and The Seventh Seal.[36] From September 2013 to September 2023, Kermode was the chief film critic for The Observer.[37] In 2018, he began to present his own documentary series Mark Kermode's Secrets of Cinema on BBC Four. A second series followed, as well as Disaster Movie, Christmas, and Oscar Winners specials. Between 2019 and 2024, Kermode presented a movie soundtrack themed show on classical radio station Scala Radio.[38] [39][40] Kermode produces an annual "best-of-the-year" movie list, thereby providing an overview of his critical preferences.

I've been to Japan 4 times now, every time solo travelling. It is the best place on earth to solo travel from all the places I've visited. Things are tailored to single persons. Unlike it's neighbour where eating out on your own in some places is not possible, would simply be refused single person or have to buy 2 persons portions. (things are getting better there but it was my experience only recently)

Japan never stops complaining about foreigners. Don't give them your money. It's vastly overrated. The land of no trash cans or paper towels to dry your hands. Perpetual adolescent fanboys like it but they are usually puriele misfits. Give Nihon what it wants - total isolation once again! 👍

That list matches our experience. I needed two wallets, one of them is still full of yen coins. Mountains for us also seem to mean rain, Hakone, Nikko, Shirakawago and Takayama all very wet. Still magic, and did make Onsen and just baths in a machiya very rewarding. I loved sitting in the outside hot spring watching the trees gently sway in the wind as clouds drifted by with the sound of a river below.

Regarding the helicopter thing.... It's called autorotate. If the motor stops, and the chopper starts moving downward, the downward momentum will start the blades rotating on their own. Hence, auto rotate. Landing will be a Tiny bit bumpy, but yeah, chopper will head downward and, like one of those flippy little seed thingies, it'll sort of float to the ground. Not QUITE float, but yeah, you'll walk away from it just fine.
