Hi Friends Happy MONDAY!
Yay Mondays. Hope your week/weekend was fantastic. Todays story is low key really heavy and sad and ugh, just awful. I kept getting recommended this over and over again so finally I caved and decided to share the story about Sylvia Likens. I definitely think in the future I just need to stay away from stories like these, they mess with me way too much. Dont get me wrong all the stories are awful , but this one was just super awful.
Anywho, Love and appreciate you guys so much! Me and my cold sore need a vacation now. Hope to see you very soon
x o

Teens bind together in a gang type mentality, "Well everyone else says how fun it is, everyone else is doing it. I'd be the next one if I didn't do it." It's the same today with bullying and why no one speaks up or against when they see something wrong. It's sad.

There are so many horrible stories out there but for some reason, this one affects me the most. I can only hope she is at peace now.

If anyone was curious, Jenny, Sylvias sister, was so haunted by the memories of what happened to her sister that she grew into a nervous recluse. In 2004 she died at the age of 54 of a heart attack. The supposed cause of her heart attack was when the pizza delivery man got to her house a little earlier than anticipated and knocked on her door, he startled her to death.
@DoziPNG
@DoziPNG Жыл бұрын
I imagine that she was terrified of Gertude's threats, even after her death. Abuse never leaves you. You're always scared that it's going to come back, because how could something that took such control of your life for so long just be.. gone? The slightest little fright is enough to make me collapse, even though I never came close to enduring anything on the same scale as this. I wish that Sylvia could have lived and gone on to live a better life.

@illibrium4590

@@angelusvastator1297 Well, Sylvia was the whipping child. If Gertrude was torturing Sylvia then she would have never turned her rage on any of them. There is also the mob mentality aspect - if you're in the bigger group and not the outcast, you have that sense of being "right" and being entitled to power over the outcast. It's a part of our social make up and it's sickening ... but when a group is made to hate one specific person or group of people, they feel empowered and bond together as a group when they do this type of stuff to the outcast. It's perhaps the most horrific part of human nature and psychology.

In cases like this, sometimes death is the only peace they can get Imagine the PTSD you’d have, the scars you’d have to look at constantly It’d be amazing for her to rise above it all, tell her story and how she “won” by living through all of that. But she’s fully at peace and didn’t have to continue living in agony (from ptsd) afterwards

In theory I believe in light sentences for children and rehabilitation and all that, but in cases like this I want them to rot in jail for the rest of their lives. You can't justify torture by being young. They probably went on to hurt others.

I remember hearing about this story. There is also a TV movie about it called "American Crime". This story was always so insane to me. In ALL aspects. How Sylvia's dad just left his kids there for such a long period of time with someone he barely knew. The fact that all these kids in the neighborhood were so complicit in beating and torturing her. It all was just so strange. And why they all singled out Sylvia and not the other child. But I mainly blame the parents of these girls. How you gonna just leave your kids with some friend's parent that you do not know indefinitely??? So infuriating.

To me this story reminded me of the story of the guy who stole one or two girls and chained them up in his basement and sexually abused them and one finally got pregnant. They never saw daylight all the windows were boarded up and they were always chained to beds and this happened for more than a decade. The only reason they escaped was because they convinced the guy the baby needed something and they were able to break down half the front door and a neighbor came running over and pulled her out and they were saved...it reminds me of this story because you are CLOSED off from civilization with no end in sight because you are stuck in a void where no one knows you exist. It’s so sad and makes me think how sad and terrible that her existence was never recognized. I didn’t feel better it made me feel worse like she had been forgotten. 😔
