Hmmm, I just checked my engine and the drivers side rear cam seal, which I did not replace when I did a head/gasket repair and the rear main seal, which I did not replace as I did the repair in the car, are leaking/weeping. I was looking for the source if a "new noise" that is likely a whine-y alternator or tensioner pulley going bad (video possibility?) when I noticed the oil comming from behind and above the oil pan. Time to go to the dealership for a few new parts. :) Nice job on the outback repair. Much better and more professional than I could ever do (that's why you are MrSubaru!)

Insurance companies suck. They're more than happy to take your money, but don't want to pay up when the time comes. I have a 2014 Ram 1500 in excellent condition. My neighbor's tree broke and fell on top of my house and truck. The insurance company tried to say that the damage on the roof of my truck was probably already there. They didn't want to pay to have the roof fixed. The moonroof wasn't even closing properly.

Glad I watched this series. Do you think, had the mating surfaces been prepped properly, that the fel-pro gaskets would have failed the way they did? I ask because I ordered the fel-pro kit for convenience sake as Subaru doesn't offer a full kit for my 1999 EJ22, and I'm replacing bent valves so I basically needed everything. If you say it will still fail, I'll order the OEM gaskets and piece together my own kit.

If the customer ever saw the head gasket trilogy, they might thank their lucky stars. You gave that aftermarket warranty company a 5 star rating. Funny Subaru hasn't superceded the kit with a better head gasket, but let's leave that one alone. I know it's common knowledge to lubricate head bolts with 30w oil, but it would be a good nerdy education video how it changes torque yields, lowers scatter. People throwing anti seize on something...buy a new fastener, you just changed torque and.stretched that bolt. Well, maybe it's not something you should explain to people. You including torque specs on some of your repair videos is nerdy enough. I love it though. Thanks for sharing this story had a happy ending 💖.

I bet Subaru still includes the single layer gasket in the kit and for sale because if they were to supersede with the MLS version it would be an admission that the single layer was/is inferior and they are afraid of thousands of owners wanting reimbursement for HG replacements.

If I had brought the vehicle in specifically for the other stuff and not the head gasket, it would have been paid for, but because this repair was for the head gasket, they wouldn't pay for it. I paid $3000 for that job in 2013....but it is worth it as an engine overall BUT have it done by a Subaru mechanic, like Mr. Subaru 1387. I went to a generic shop and the car was never the same (99 Legacy Outback). Only Subaru I have regrets about, out of 6 owned over 22 year span...still have 3 left!

@@MrSubaru1387 The same year as our old Outback 2.5, which was bought new. We ran it for for 149k miles before trading it in in 2017. The oil and filter were changed every 5k, but I did not use OEM filters. Started to seep oil from a head gasket at 90k. Towards the end it was leaking about a quart of oil every 400 miles, plus started to use coolant. Regular coolant flushes (with Subaru coolant conditioner added, of course!) could only stem the tide for so long. There were a approximately 10 additional relatively minor issues when we traded it in for a new 2017 Outback 2.5, which has had issues with "disappearing coolant" almost from the get go. Conditioner added twice by two different dealers. The second time we had the coolant flushed at about 51k in addition to the conditioner. They said it tested fine. Now at 54k, the coolant has dropped about 2 inches in the recovery tank. Your thoughts, please. Thank you.

Hard to say without seeing it. Personally would do a cylinder leakage test.

@@MrSubaru1387 Is what you're suggesting commonly known as a "leak down" test? And how about checking for combustion gases in the coolant? Thanks again.

I guess. Out each cylinder on TDC on compression. Fill cylinder with air through the spark plug hole. Check for pressure drop in cylinder.
