To be fair, referencing an absurd continuity and then ignoring it when it's convenient probably makes the X-Men franchise the most faithful comic adaptation ever.

“What’s wrong with Wolverine.” He’s not the only important member of the team, but the franchise sure likes to act like he is.

What’s funnier is that even after Wolverine was removed from play, they just replaced him with another spotlight stealing squad. In this case it was Mystique in Apocalypse followed by Charles and Magneto in Dark Phoenix. First Class is the only proper ensemble movie in this series.

Wolverine was never meant to be a leading man, nor should he be. He's an impact character, like Bluto in Animal House. A short, surly wild man. (not a tall dark and handsome romantic lead) He comes in, makes a big impression then leaves. The longer a character like that hangs around, the less interesting they become. Part of the appeal of such a character is their mystery. Bluto/Logan shouldn't be the POV character. That should be someone normal and relate able. (in the comics or cartoon it was someone like Jubilee or Kitty Pryde.) Someone boring to ground and juxtapose all the craziness the X-Men bring.

To me, I feel the exact same way except it's the other way around. I struggled to connect with the future stuff as they are mainly action scenes with only a couple of moments to develop the characters. And most of the fighters don't get any real dialogue like colossus and storm. Whereas I at least got some interesting scenes between characters in the 70s...it isn't perfect but that's just my 2 cents

Did we watch the same movie? Wolverine was intentionally the decoy protagonist: there to satisfy existing wolverine fanboys but mostly pointless to the main story. He doesn’t do anything because the story is really about Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique.

I've always thought about how we could've gotten Wolverine's iconic death from the DOFP comic in the movie. When they announced Quicksilver was gonna be in the movie, I thought he was gonna be the one to travel to the past, because he has super speed and it would make sense for him to go back and it would've been awesome! Quicksilver could've been the audience surrogate and seeing him meet the past-versions of Prof. X, Beast and Magneto, and fanboying over seeing them so young, and dropping tidbits about their future-selves would've made the movie 1000x better.

My favourite bit about this movie is the time travel bit. It doesn’t get bogged down in scientific explanation it’s just like, yeah she’s a mutant she can send people back in time.

In hindsight, they should have just done a straight sequel with a big ensemble cast and have them fight sentinels at the end

I respect your opinion and I also have a problem with Wolverine in the x-men movies (in fact, I even hope that, once MCU introduce the mutants, they have the x-men without wolverine in the first movie, saving Logan for a sequel), HOWEVER, in the case of DOFP I think having Logan wasb't that of a problem compare to the other movies for 2 reasons : Reason 1) It helps progress the story more efficiently. If the time traveler was any other mutant like Kitty or Bishop, then FOX would need to devote some of the movie to establish develop the character, which could take away from the main focus that is the DOFP which is Xavier, Magneto and Mystique story. By changing and going with already establish character like Wolverine, who, for better or for worse, has gotten more development than anyone else in the franchise it free more time for the story to focus on Xavier and Magneto and their attempt to stop Mystique from killing Trask. Reason 2) It helps developted the relation between Wolverine and Xavier, since, unlike the previous movies in which Xavier was the wiser mentor while Wolverine was the impulsive and "act by instict" hero, in DOFP the roles reverse, with Logan now being the one who guides the young and broken Xavier, in the same way Xavier did for him (This plot continues even futher in Logan).

I don’t care what anyone says. This will ALWAYS be my favourite x-men movie and x-men story overall

Honestly, the whole Stryker/Mystique thing is one small continuity issue in a SEA of continuity issues with these movies. I mean, how can you explain Trask changing into a white "little person" when he was a big beefy black dude in the first X-Men? Why doesn't anybody else age, except Emma Frost who, apparently, ages backwards? Why is Jean showing Phoenix powers at the end of Apocalypse if she doesn't get them until Dark Phoenix? That's just a few!

DoFP isn’t bad. For me, It’s one of the highlights in the series because it feel like more of an ensemble. It would’ve been more interesting to go forward with the future cast from there or explore an alternate timeline with Mystique derailing Wolverine for her own purposes. My recommendation for watching the series is: 1. X-Men 2. First Class 3. X2: X-Men United 4. Days of Futures Past (it works in continuity if you can overlook one flashback) 5. (Optional) Deadpool 1 & 2 6. Logan

I always thought it would be cool if they mentioned at the beginning of DOFP, that a team member was sent to the past already. A few things changed, but he failed. This is their last hope. Once Logan makes it to the X-Mansion in the 70s, he still fights Beast. Then, walking down the stairs with Charles, we see Havok (Replace his character with Banshee in Vietnam). Havok and Logan smile at each other. In a separate scene Havok and Logan catch up. We learn that Havok was the team member sent to the past originally in the 60s, but failed at stopping Mystique in the 70s (His entire body was sent to the past, rather than conscious). Unfortunately, his device broke, trapping him in the past. This would prove that he is actually the time displaced, younger brother of Cyclops, rather than the older one. During the fight scene with the sentinels, Havok gets killed. That would have more of an impact than his weak death in Apocalypse.

I really loved that it was Logan who went back in time personally. It was cool seeing him having to use something that he never really uses to win battles: his brain. Seeing him having to act as a mentor to Charles was really fresh and enduring to me. To be fair, if it were someone else travelling back in time instead, it wouldn't nearly be as entertaining. Logan interacting with the younger versions of the characters were the best parts of the movie. with him and Beast being a standout moment.

Its like you didnt even watch the movie They explicitly say that it HAS to be wolverine cause hes the only one alive in the 70s that can complete the mission, they dont physically send your body back they send your consciousness back into your past body, so if youre about to say it should have been iceman or storm youre wrong cause they were even born yet in the 70s, therefore they have no physical body to send the consciousness back into Also im pretty sure they mention that its extremely painful and rips your brain apart which is also why it has to be wolverine cause he can heal his brain fastee than its being ripped apart

Here's the thing, if you don't send Wolverine back, you can't have the moment where the guy with all the background the movies have built Wolverine up with ends up in the alternate happy future where Jean Grey and Scott are alive and he's a history teacher. It was like a great end Back to the Future moment that wouldn't have as well with any other character from the original trilogy of movies. Also the only other character the original movies kind of got us invested in was Rouge but the way they set their time travel rules up, she might not of been born yet to quantum leap into her younger body yet.

I disagree that Wolverine shouldn’t have been sent back in the past. I believe that it worked because Wolverine is the protagonist, but not the focus. Wolverine is the character we have followed so far, so it makes sense to follow him through the movie as well. He is our perspective character we have had for 5 movies (for better or for worst) so we should stay with him. I think the characters in first class should have been in the movie as well. We can see new relations created, but those characters can get killed off on-screen. The movie happens all around him. The other characters in DoFP are the characters are the focus. We just get to see these new versions of these characters through Wolverine.

For me, X Men Days of Future Past is awesome, I love it the most out of all the X Men movies... I think for me it’s Days of Future Past, X2, First Class, X1 then all the rest (not including Deadpool)

one thing about the "time travel" was that they didn't send back his body, they just sent back his conciousness to himself in the past. So first, you needed a mutant that existed in the 70s, thats also in the future. OR you'll need a different time travel mechanic which would also work

I feel like Hugh's Wolverine and RDJ's Iron Man are kinda similar in the public eye. Both aren't the leader of their respective but the movies, and by proxy the audience, see them as the best superhero in their respective universe and when they die, everyone idolizes them as a legend. Oh and both of them take on a younger protege, sidekick, son/daughter character which basically them but younger.

That's what makes it perfect, there are two stories... You said it yourself, the only people who didnt like it are the people who compares it to "original"... This is the perfect xmen for me. They both showed the peek of thier power on one story, and other one gives us their fisrt struggle... But i like your story, nice.

I thought one of the main issues was that 1. His healing factor allows his mind to deal with going back so far and 2. Aside from Charles and Erick he's the only one who was old enough in the 70s. Erick was in prison so that wouldn't work and sending Charles back seems to resolve all the tension which would mean no movie

To those who survive the Coronavirus Crisis on the Infinite Earths, when you remake the Marvel Cinematic Universe, might I suggest that Days of Future Past and Age of Ultron be merged into the same story. Make sure you keep Ultron's personality exactly the same though because let's be honest his face and his voice coming out of all the sentinels would be very entertaining yet terrifying at the same time.

Also, Wolverine literally disappears from the movie's third act, because, well, this wasnt his story, he went to the past to give Charles a message, once that was done, it was up to Charles to convince Raven to change history while dealing with Erik. Magneto literally swaps Wolverine from the movie.

Kitty pride though? Right? Shadowcat? She does it in the comics if I’m not mistaken. She’s literally just sitting there as a time machine in the movie.

Tbf, Logan was the one the audience connected with the most so it makes sense for him to play an important role in DoFP. Plus, he’s relatively in the same state in the past so it’s safer for him to go.

So, does anyone have an idea what Fox was originally planning with having Mystique disguised as Stryker? I feel like that they originally wanted her to form the Brotherhood of Mutants, with Past Wolverine as one of the members. Or maybe they had no plan at all, and were just sequel baiting us. What do you guys think?

You may sway me in part 2 but based on this video I don't agree. Sending someone other than Wolverine wouldn't fix most of the issues brought up. And while sending someone else might create more conflict, it wouldn't make sense in the story. If anyone could go that far back, then they would have already done it. Plus, we get to watch Wolverine have to deal with fighting without the adamantium this way.

The reason they send Wolverine to the past is that they are setting up a love triangle between him, Storm, and Black Panther. It's not hard to see Wolverine woke up, leaving, and Stryker catching up to him, and him ended up back where he started maybe Stryker using Magneto's helmet or something like that. Because Stryker is no fool to see Wolverine and not try to get his hands on him to make a weapon.

DoFP is actually my favourite main X-Men movie (excluding Logan). Although i do think First Class is a better movie

I see where you’re coming from and (obviously) you have a well fleshed out perspective. However, I strongly disagree with you on this one. This was a very strong film with a seamless take on time travel and a reliable lead. Like it’s shocking how well this film worked and I love it for that. This is my favorite X-men film. Nando, your renditions always hit the mark! Can you give one for The Dark Knight Rises? With so much hype coming from TDK, I felt like the third installment was mostly a letdown with moments here and there. I'd enjoy hearing what you'd do differently.

Wolverine is the main character of the X-men movies because Hugh Jackman was getting the biggest paycheck.

The future stuff really wasn't important narratively speaking, which is why it gets way less screentime and most of the characters in it have no lines and just fight sentinels. The movie is set up to priotize the more popular reboot timeline. Leaving Wolverine stuck in the past would've been a huge mistake. Whether we like it or not, Wolverine is the central character of this film franchise so it was a no-brainer to have him be the connective tissue between the two timelines. And frankly it's one of the few great ideas that this franchise had during its lifetime.

I feel the same way. The fight scenes in the future are some of my favourite X-Men film moments but I dream rewatching the whole film because I find the past quite boring and I hate the Jennifer Lawrence Mystique character

Surprised I haven't seen a comment recalling that it was never planned for Logan to go back, but rather Charles. But the film created the scenario of "the further back you go the more scrambled the mind", thus suggesting that Logan was the only one to physically survive the process (Ignoring that neurological and psyche damage isn't all that directly related to physical damage, but whatever).

I am fine with all the wolverine stuff in days if future past, but, With the Mystique-Stryker reveal at end, I would change that. Mystique would have brought Logan to the X Mansion, so Wolverine could be a side character in the other films. Wolverine would never go through weapon X, always having the bone claws, which I think is cool. Also, the Logan in the past would have never woken up in the future, with no memory of the last 50 Years, so, Charecter Devolpment Logan gets in movies like Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix will stay. So how will the other movies play out? Well Apocalypse will be mostly the same, with Logan teaching at the school, and when the mansion blows up, Stryker sees Wolverine and takes him with the rest of the gang. In this version, Storm wouldn't be a horsemen so, Apocalypse will only have 3 at the time Apocalypse kidnaps Proffesor X. Also in this version, Havok is alive, but Havok would be kidnapped by Apocalypse, becoming a horsemen. So, for the final fight in Cairo we have Wolverine, Mystique, Quicksilver, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Beast, Moira, and Storm because why not? The rest of the movie is the same. In Dark Phoenix, Wolverine would have a cameo in the very beginning, leaving the mansion for the events of the movie, which would tie in to a new version of Deadpool 2 somehow, mabye he leaves because of what happens in the icebox, and goes to hunt down Deadpool, Russel, and Juggernaut. No real effect on the events of Logan, I don't think this version of events changes much, except Wolverine has bone claws in this. Tell me what you think of this new version of the timeline!

The best part about all this is Mystique never killed Trask in the first place, he's in X3 played by Bill Duke. They realized their mistake and tried to hide it by saying "well we never gave him a first name so there, it can't be the same person" 🙄

I don't think they could just send anyone other than wolverine. Kitty’s powers in the movie don’t allow her to physically send someone through time, all she can to is project a person’s consciousness into their body in the past. And as it takes place in 1973, Kitty can’t project her consciousness that far back because she hasn’t been born yet. There’s also another reason sending people back puts an incredible strain on the mind. They needed someone whose brain could heal from the damage and that meant Wolverine.

I mean Wolverine was one of the only characters old enough and able to withstand the trip. But I have one nitpick with the film. When Kitty sends Logan back they disappear meaning he was successful,spoiling the ending.

I've read the comics and i've seen all the shows. As an OG X-Men fan the movie fixed all the things i hated in comics and Shows. It's my favorite version of Days of Future Past.

And who to send back instead...taking out the whole needing his healing factor to counteract the damage from the brain splitting whatever nonsense; I'd send Xavier.

Wolverine is a short little guy who eats a lot, sleeps a lot, smokes a lot, and curses a lot. He's less leading man and more the resident grumpy uncle of the X-Men.

The X-Men Prequel/Reboots have the same continuity as the Resident Evil movies! Maybe they looked at Marvel Vs Capcom and thought, hey we'll treat this like Resident Evil...

Why they didn't adapt the animated series version, I will never know. Send Bishop not being sure about who the killer is. A future Sentinel after him that the team in the past can't stop, only run away from. Wolverine going out like a badass in the future, etc.

Send professor X right? I think I'd be pretty cool. It would given more credence to having a mind travel so far back considering such a powerful mind like the professor. Logan made kind of sense, but Professor X is the better option. He could still recruit Logan, if they wish.

I bet it's Charles the one you are going to mention as the time traveler, because it's him and Bobby the ones with Kitty when all of this happens, but Bobby is more usefull fighting in the future or protecting Kitty. And because the reason why Logan was the one who could go to the past was that his mind could heal itself, but Charles mind as a telepath, could also work

OK, the way you framed it, it's either Iceman or Storm, but can I get an honorable mention for Rogue, though? She can have literally ANY power she touches, making her a great natural foil for Mystique (one steals your image, one steals your being). We'll ignore that Mother/Daughter thing. Also, & most importantly, it ties in to the beginning of the franchise that started with not Wolverine as the main character, but Rogue. Just Saying.
