Man, just wanted to state that by far and away, you are the best laser reviewer/channel on here. All the others bombard you with music, flashy graphics and yelling. It's so nice to have a very straight forward presenter who is knowledgeable and doesn't hold back on what he thinks. Keep it up!!

Ordered mine during the event. I'm super excited, this is my first laser. I was going to order the D1 Pro last month and saw the announcement for the S1 so I decided to wait to see what it had to offer. It was so hard waiting even longer but I'm so glad I did! This will easily meet my current needs until I can save up for a CO2 unit. Thanks for the information you provided leading up to release, it didn't make the wait less painful but they did consistently leave me reassured that the delay would be worth it.👍

Fantastic video, you do a great job of explaining things. This S1 looks amazing - just ordered one with your link! I got the 40W and added the honeycomb, air assist and the riser base (note: adding the base you lose the class 1 safety certification). I like the idea that I can add an IR module down the road. I'm not familiar with their creative space software so I'll have to learn it like I did LightBurn. Maybe you could do a video on XCS? Thanks Justin - look forward to more of your vids!

I ordered the S1 during the live event tonight. This will be my first laser, but have wanted one for awhile. Didn't get one previously because of the safety issues of the diode machines not having an enclosure and having to wear safety glasses. The S1 addresses both of those issues. I went with the 20 watt module as I figured I would be doing mainly engraving so wanted the better resolution the 20 watt would offer over the 40 watt. I am looking forward to more of your videos.

Thanks Janine! You can cut the darker opaque colors like black. The more translucent the color, the more difficult this style laser beam is going to have cutting. Its not going to cut clear acrylic the beam will pass right through it. CO2's like the P2 are really the sweet spot for all types of acrylic.

@justinlaser
@justinlaser 7 ай бұрын
If you have to use the curve surface detection Im not 100% sure if you can set that up for multiple items to run at once. Thats a great thing to look in to. If its a flat engrave, you will want to create a "jig" that the spoons sit in and you can run many at a time.

What's up Justin. First, thank you for your videos and honest reviews. I'm toying with the idea of getting my first laser, primarily for hobby uses. I have been heavily considering the S1. The concern I have involves the technical/customer support from xTool. Have you heard of any negative experiences in this regard? I imagine you likely do not have issues with this based on your experience and relationship, but I follow Murphy's law when getting into something like this. Also, if you really want a challenge, try cheering for the damn Pirates. Thank you again for the content.
@justinlaser

I have definitley heard people talk about some issues with Customer Support but thats usually because its only people who have issues that come online to talk about it. Im sure the time zone thing doesnt help since they are based in China. I havent heard any complete horror stories though. The best thing to do is join the xTool Facebook Groups. They have ones specific to the S1 as well. Usually the problems people run into have happened before and someone has an answer. Good luck!

Hi there. First off thank you for your videos, I’ve been watching them for a while now whilst figuring out what laser to purchase. My question is this; I was literally about to order the OMTech Polar 55W CO2 laser that is due for release tomorrow, however, I have now seen the XTool S1 Diode. I am looking to both engrave and cut but I see pros and cons to both machines. The OMTech comes with rotary axles already installed and will cope with acrylics, however, has a smaller work area (I want to make a few personalised keepsake boxes e.g for my children’s ‘first’ things and I’m unsure if the Polar will be able to do this?). There isn’t a huge price difference between the two, especially having to buy a lot of the XTool accessories separately. Which one would you recommend?
@justinlaser
@justinlaser 7 ай бұрын
It seems like both should be able to handle what you are looking to do. Unless the boxes are really large, they are pretty comparable size-wise main difference obviously being the co2 vs diode source. If you ever envision yourself wanting to use clear acrylic in your projects then you will want to go with the Polar. This is a tough one because of how close these 2 are in features and price. I honestly dont think you will go wrong with either choice. I havent used a Polar yet so I cant give a review on how it feels.

I had been eyeing up this laser for a while and your review convinced me to go for it. I just received the S1@40W today. After unboxing it and assembling the unit with its laser module, I connected the S1 via USB to my MacBook Pro 16" M1Max and fired up xTool Creative Space. Much to my dismay, I can not configure WiFi. No KZfaq reviews discussed the WiFi, so I assumed it would function, after all, what DOESN'T have built-in WiFi these days??? I'm very disappointed that I need to tether my MacBook to this S1 to use it. :(

I have set up Wifi on mine. You'll need to use your phone and the xTool app to do it. It's a little clunky, on Android at least, but once set up you can run jobs from the xTool Creative software over wifi. Lightburn doesn't support wifi though, unless you use Lightburn Bridge which looks like way too much work.

Per the live stream last night just like the P2 there are key features that won’t work with lightburn, eg rotary tool, conveyor and engraving on curves I think. I don’t know how you’d handle a project that has elements in lightburn and xTool creative space. I don’t get it. Good luck.
@justinlaser

Thanks! You dont get all the features with Lightburn as of now. They noted that "features such as real-time laser module positioning, material area measurement, and curved surface mode are not supported by LightBurn". @justinlaser
@justinlaser 7 ай бұрын
Outside of cutting acrylic (mainly clear, blue, white) its also not going to do well with glass. I also think the cut edges coming from a co2 laser are much nicer and more predictable than a diode source. Mainly you are looking at usable power and speed plus not having to worry about certain materials not reacting as you hoped they would. CO2 is very straightforward.

Too chaotic and too many Q’s imo. Any brand reco on C02 with lightburn? Might get thunder just to avoid problems and increase speed. But also looking at Aeon. Epilog too pricey. HELP. I’m worried about P2 after watching S1 last night. Mostly cutting textiles and leather but want to get into engraving some product extensions since my leatherwork takes a lot of time. Thoughts? @justinlaser 7 ай бұрын
I stayed in for a while but was getting late my daughter didnt let me sleep the night before haha. The Thunder and Aeon are great options for sure, $10k is a solid budget. The good thing about just dealing with leather is you dont need any crazy bed size or wattage rating. I have a 65w and its PLENTY for leather. The big question is do you want a "desktop" size unit or do you have space for a full-size?
@km_777
@km_777 7 ай бұрын
@@justinlaser thanks for the 65w reco bcuz when shopping you think you need the 100w and you get FOMO. desktop would be great but I think they’re overpriced with the air add ons … I have 100 year old house with shaky floors so I don’t think I can swing a super heavy floor model. Garage freezes. when I look at thunder and some of the entry level higher end desktop models (“maker models”) … they position them as a hobby machine but since those are really tight companies maybe I should take another look. I don’t want the bottom, entry-level model, but I guess I need to be realistic that I don’t really need a 60 inch bed either (even though my textiles are 60”L). I have to remind myself I’m not a factory. Are you still digging your boss? Any desktops you’re impressed by? Would you go with the reputable high end brand again like you did with your boss? I don’t have time to tinker and trouble shoot iffy machines that are a great deal (omtech set up videos are sketch). Thank you kindly for your advice!

IR laser is that for infrared like the F1 what would be the difference, I have a Gorge I see that you have a tech behind you if you had to do a comparison what would it be and why
@justinlaser
@justinlaser 7 ай бұрын
The IR module that you would put into the S1 is the same power as the F1. The massive difference being the S1 is a gantry system and the F1 is a galvo. So if all you want to do is smaller (max 4.5" x 4.5") engravings on metal the F1 is the better option because it will be MUCH faster. Not even comparable when it comes to speed. I touch on this a bit in my xTool IR module review video I did a little while back.

I'm new to lasers. Does it have a passthrough? Also does xtool have a way to capture the smoke and fumes with a filter instead of routing out a window? That's not an option for me. Thanks!
@justinlaser
@justinlaser 7 ай бұрын
The base model S1 does not have passthrough. The riser base add-on does create the space needed however I am not sure if its intended as a passthrough slot by itself, or, specifically for the automatic conveyor feed. I will have to ask I am unsure on that myself. xTool does offer a fume extractor setup that will be compatible with this. I also use fume extractors for my other lasers. The problem is the cheaper ones never work as well. Take a look at Fume-x or Filtrabox Micro if you need a serious filter system.

Yea that exhaust fan looks a little anemic. I would take the fan out and use a beefy one like I use on my CO2 laser (I never see smoke, it is drawn down between the cut lines of my wood, and while I clean my lens on occasion I have never seen any smoke build up on it or the mirrors.

As for the lightburn software integration fyi xTool told me they have NO plans to integrate missing functions on their P2 model (similar situation they’ve noted for S1) … meaning that their “promise” that they were working with lightburn to develop missing software features in their P2 launch video is null and void. Since P2 recently launched as well, that was bad news imo. And I haven’t bought the P2 because if it. How hard do you think it is to switch back and forth between lightburn and xTool creative space to run the same project? Is that even feasible to do? Thanks again. You ROCK.
@justinlaser

I wish XCS would allow direct .ai file importing because thats what I use the most. SVG files are weird sometimes and dont always play nice across programs. For straight up vector stuff its not that hard to use both at all. I doubt XCS will become as "feature rich" as Lightburn is but they are making good updates as time goes on. Not the best for acrylic. Not just this specific machine but any machine with a diode laser source. CO2 laser is best for acrylic.

Is there preset settings for materials like the M1?

I will need to check. That would be a function of Creative Space so Id imagine even if there isnt one right now, there will be soon.

what kind of metal it can mark and can it do deep marking to a depth up to 4mm?
@justinlaser
@justinlaser 7 ай бұрын
With the IR module installed it can mark ALL metals. If you use the standard 20 or 40w module, it can mark metals best with a marking spray like Cermark. No chance on a 4mm depth engraving. You are going to have to get a fiber laser for that.

I engraved stainless steel on mine. Definitely nothing close to 4mm though, at best ~0.2mm with the 40w module. Engraving looks great though.

Thank you! Was having a difficult time finding the dimensions of the physical unit rather than bed size from their website. Thanks again!

There's an option to turn off the beep in machine settings according to the live stream. Click the gear next to the machine in the upper right hand corner and go to working parameters@@justinlaser

There is no doubt it's a nice "looking" laser, but the absence of a camera is a deal breaker. The 2-point system is only functional when using a square piece of wood, it won't map out a triangle, precut "hobby shop" wood shapes like a circle, arrow, plus sign...you get the point. With odd shapes, you're forced to frame it with the cross hairs. They made a big deal about the 2-point being more accurate than a camera, then why did they put 2 cameras in the P2? They should of put a camera in the S1...opportunity missed. They also made the work area too small, if you have a 13" x 13" piece of wood it won't work, and if you spend the money on the riser and conveyor, it still won't work because the 13" x 13" is too small and won't work with the conveyor. They should of made the D1-V2 and put a nice enclosure around it, included the P2's camera and called it good.

Two things that are not mentioned in your review. First, the S1 has a top speed of 600mm/sec, so it’s potentially a pretty fast machine. And second, (although you weren’t aware of at the time of your review) as of the XTOOL livestream last night, the S1 is in stock for immediate delivery in (at least) the US.

True I should have mentioned the speed factor. I tend not to go anywhere near that high when running engravings but its worth trying it out.

Do not use the S1 indoors! Save yourself so many health issues. Get it next to a window and use extra air purifiers and a string inline fan with ducts to the outside.
