A few people have asked me to look at Yokogawa. I am familiar with their strip chart recorders but havn't used any of their handheld DMMs. How will their top of the line flag ship product compare with the other meters I have looked at? Watch and find out.

@TMM I was about to write exactly what you said. Especially with today's available display technology. It makes me wonder if it couldn't be a defective unit perhaps ? I can't imagine a company designing an expensive DMM with such a poor quality display ? Moreover, holy smokes, there's a lot of ICs in this thing ! Hasn't Yokogawa ever heard of a FPGA ?

A lot of those chips are probably analogue (opamps) and signal muxes / cmos logic. They are cheap, probably cheaper than an FPGA/CPLD/uC that could replace them. If you're designing a multimeter to sell for the next 20 years you also don't want to design in some flavour of the week IC that will be unobtainable in 5 years. That often results in one custom multimeter IC or well supported uC, plus a bunch of jellybean parts. The japanese also seem to be strongly opposed to using non-japanese produced ICs, so if they aren't willing to use a Chinese/Taiwanese multimeter-on-a-chip IC or spin their own custom IC you end up with a very dense design like this. I also suspect this design is already very outdated and even if they could consolidate a few chips it isn't worth the re-engineering expense.

I've just found one of those in a very good price (brand new, with optics and USB cables included) for about USD 180 (converted to USD), and I felt tempted to buy it. But the display and that DC measurement bug seems a huge deal breaker. I wonder how Yokogawa, that has such great wattmeters and fair decend scopes could let those flaws on a flagship multimeter. Thanks a lot for the review, John. Great job once again. I only missed the rotary switch test (because my two current multimeters suffers - a lot- from rotary switch wear).

Regarding solvent susceptibility of the display window, I've found that of all things, isopropanol causes hazing on my old Fluke 77. One would think that IPA would be utterly common and fairly benign. It's not as aggressive as toluene/acetone/MEK would be on an acrylic, but it's enough to leave white spots if it gets spattered on the meter. It's mild enough that you can use a rag lightly dampened with IPA as a solvent polish like one would on acetate. Just keep buffing until all the solvent has evaporated That said, I'm talking about a nearly 30 year old product. There's nothing to suggest anybody uses the same materials anymore.

Greetings. Great video. Just to clarify something at 5:40. The LP ohms Is not lowpass filter ohms function. It Is Low Power Ohms function. When measuring resistance, the current could affect the ohmic value of the specimen. So, the approach of Yokogawa (or Kyoritsu) Is to test with less current. Also, this meter has either average rectification (MEAN Button) or true-rms to measure AC Volts, though I don't know exactly why an eagle would fly like a pigeon.
@joesmith-je3tq
@joesmith-je3tq 5 жыл бұрын
If you look carefully at my videos, I would guess there are at least a few mistakes on each of them. In this case, LP is a very common acronym I use but of course, you are correct that they use it for something other than this. The manual suggests it is for in-circuit measurements but they don't elaborate on it. Possibly there was a concern about damaging other sensitive components.

I don't understand how they can sell this DMM for 600 USD and who's going to to buy it. I've seen some other meters looking exactly as same as this one (I have feeling it a re-badged). Thanks for the video and the time and your efforts.

If that display is anywhere near as bad in person it's a deal breaker for me. My handheld meters are pretty much always used in less than ideal positions (if I'm at my bench I'm using my bench meter.) And a good high contrast display is pretty much the most important thing to me.

Hey, you finally get to see how the meter held up. You can also see why I didn't take you up on your offer. You would end up with a damaged meter. The meter is fairly old. Do you really think they would offer an improved version? I would think it was close to it's end of life.

It's a rebranded CEM. Extech also uses CEM. I've looked at a few of their products and have used one for the past several years. In my experience, the quality has been hit and miss. For a 6000 count meter, the $100 seems steep.

When Akira asked me about it, he had purchased one of each and reviewed them together. I want a meter to display the correct voltage when applied, especially once I get over 40V! As bad as the display is, that one problem is a deal breaker for me. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdtjqZuDkrKbXX0.html

@@joesmith-je3tq The display in my case is a big disappointment... as is the lag mentioned above. I do not have any incorrect voltage measurements above 40v. Might be a calibration issue. @@billywhizzySo you have one of these. If you watched this entire video, you have seen where the meter can't read below or above 40V. There wasn't anything magical about that number except from a risk standpoint. If you inject signals as I have shown, you claim yours read correctly? Or are you not understanding what I am injecting into the meter? I would be interested in knowing if your meter does have this same bug. I say bug because obviously this meter is cal.
