The Young Taxidermist Giving New Life to Dead Animals

What do you see when you imagine a taxidermist? You probably envision an older man or a scientist, but taxidermy is actually making a come back among young millennials who are interested in the DIY aspect of the craft.
Meet Mickey Alice Kwapis, a Chicago-based professional taxidermist who travels the world to teach her craft. More than 90 percent of her students are young professional women. Mickey is part of a growing young generation of women who are becoming increasingly more interested in taxidermy, and in this video she will walk us through the history and different purposes for preserving and mounting the skin of dead animals, and explain why it's so appealing again.
No animals were harmed during the making of this film!

Honestly I agree. It was kinda off putting to see someone who should be unbiased and just there to bring light to a subject act like a random person who was forced to take a taxidermy class. Lol like hello? I thought the message was to stop passing judgment on something you don’t understand but ok

Geez man, people are just judging her by the title of her job/ hobby. They assume she killed them on purpose, when really she just wants to turn them into something and honor them instead of just getting rid of their bodies. She didn't want the kittens to die, she wants to honor them and do something for them, since they died at an early age, she was literally crying, since she watched them die in her hands; that certainly isn't "murdering kittens".

I honestly admire her confidence with her craft, scrolling through the comments and though I found positive ones a lot of people decided it's disgusting to stuff an animal that has already lived it's life and passed on. Taxidermy is beneficial to our education as well, when an animal is preserved scientist's are able to study its body and learn more. Future generations are also able to see what the past had too offer, These people breathe (not literally) life into the creatures, and give people a sense of what these animals were like alive. Sure some put clothes on them or other stuff but that's their view on their work, and how THEY want it. And honestly, we've had human corpses shown in museums and put on display. Their called mummies, another corpse put on display for our so called viewing pleasure. I'm proud of this young lady who found her calling and what she enjoys, she encourages her students to do this in a proper manner. They don't just kill an animal for this, she only takes animals that died of natural causes. Say what you want but I wanna grow up at least knowing that when an animal goes extinct I can go to a museum that has it displayed and see what it once looked like.

You don’t need a fictional tv show about it, people have been observed with corpse preservation for years! I recommend “Ask a Mortician”’s KZfaq channel if you want to watch something about it. The real horror though are things like mummies being displayed in museums when they haven’t consented though that’s a personal thing with me.

Yeah, there are certainly legitimate reasons for hunting. Just to have a trophy isn't one of them in and of itself. But if you have other, good reasons and it doesn't violate the law and the animal suffers as little as possible...go for it. And I see nothing wrong with stuffing it as a trophy afterward because it is dead anyways. Not something I would do but I'm not going to prevent others from doing it in those cases.

Xeoflip the thing is, you can feel through gloves if they are fit properly. I'm a nurse and I can feel a vein in someone's arm through properly fit gloves. I think her health should be priority. Dead creatures, especially rodents or animals not frozen right away carry very dangerous diseases.

"I'm a nurse" isn't "I'm a taxidermist". Also those mice are frozen right away. Her health is a priority and you shouldn't try to spread opinion as fact when you know little of what she does. Think of it as a steak, chicken, or pork, none of that is frozen right away and then handled. It's not like she's finding these animals dead out on the streets either.

Joslyn Vosta I may not be a taxidermist but I've actually seen animal born illness manifest in a human being, have you? That person ended up going septic and had a 2 year recovery time. My comment is my opinion based on science and what I've seen. YOU chose to take it how you wanted. Just exactly how what you say IS NOT FACT. Do you know for a fact that every animal she has used was frozen immediately? Also, these animals, if frozen, are still not necessarily disease free. Look up bloodborn pathogen.

@jellyfish2219 5 жыл бұрын
So you support hunting for sport? As in, they have no good reason to hunt the animal, and they do it just for fun. Plus, the animal a person killed was most likely having a good life up until some person killed them. The animal that they killed could’ve had babies, and now the babies have to fend for themselves. You really have to think about all the possible situations.

mia that’s why hunting seasons exist to protect the young. Hunters don’t shoot deer in the spring, because that’s when they’re having babies. We hunt them in the fall because that’s when the fawns are old enough to fend for themselves and the rut is in full swing.
