This model and engine is the sweet spot in the range - I was anti range rover, until I bought a 2007 3.6 like this, now I'm a convert. It's an extremely decent car way more reliable than people think, and better than most other large luxury cars - all of which are prone to expensive problems.

Thing with the Ital is so many people will remember their Dad/Granddad/Uncle/neighbour having one. Its nostalgia which can be priceless- first thing that occurred to me when I saw it was I could remember when they were launched and a mate just wanted to be able to own one - what a thing to aspire to ! - and a brother-in-law who was a mechanic and RAC Patrolman at various times and he ran a few of them. My headteacher had an Ital 1.3 HL in that pastel yellowy-beige with a red interior, FWN181W. He lived just down the road from me and gave me lifts to school in it. The back doors needed a good slam to close properly, and he was forever throwing red oxide primer at every rust spot he could find. Just before I left home in 1990, he replaced it with a secondhand silver Cavalier Commander. He was definitely one of us.

My neighbour has an orange Hilman Avenger. It’s not a special high spec rally one, just a very smart everyday car from back in the day. Whenever it’s out of the garage people stop to talk to him about it. Being orange helps as it just makes you smile. I love classic cars that were ordinary everyday cars that dads had when I was growing up. I love seeing Mk1 Cavaliers for instance as my dad had one. Would love to see a blue Opel Rekord Berlina as he one of these to. These type of cars are so rare now 😢

I was told I was driving it too softly, so throw some diesel cleaner in, fill it up with BP Ultimate, and give it a damned good thrashing. Excessive smoking has ceased, and it now pulls like a train again, with little smoke, and no more problems. Just saying.

James... Greetings from Somerset. Sometimes the cheap remedies ar the best. Re Marina/Ital. People are such hypocrites regarding these cars. They were cheap to run, lacking in complications just like their forerunner the Moggy. We had a 1.8 that my wife sold for more than twice what I paid for it, a 1300 that just ran and ran and gave my apprentice 2 years of trouble free motoring and an Ital van that I bought as a "failed project" for £13.00 with no engine and box that I put a gold seal engine and box in ( 2000 miles before lady ran car in a ditch) and I used that as my daily for my decorating business with no issues (or key. Just a screwdriver to start) and sold it to a window cleaner who used it for four years until he let his assistant drive it at weekends but caught out after drinking and spreading it over a roundabout. I took lump and box out and put it in a seised Ital.... Not bad motors really... Bob (Weston super Mare)

Hah , the secret is out !!! i use this stuff all the time when doing a full service on volvo D5's . Run a tin through the injectors neat , replace the filter and prefill it with another tin and chuck the rest in the tank. Have seen unbelievable chunks of black rubbish coming out the return hoses , so i run a basic filter on the return to catch these bits nowadays.
@ChopsGarage8 ай бұрын
Nice validation, can you advise as how to get it through injectors neat?
@AndrewNeilBaird8 ай бұрын
@@ChopsGarage Ok, on the v70 you feed the high pressure pump on the rhs of the head above the egr valve with a pipe run into the tin and from the fuel return leak off pipes on top of the injectors a short pipe with a cheap disposable filter , you also plug the feed from the tank as there is a lift pump on them in the tank , and plug the return line also .Usually a good rev to get it going then the engine will run for around 25 minutes at idle until its used up almost all the treatment , then reconnect and take it a 30 mile drive if possible keeping the revs up so no 5th gear cruising . Did a v60 couple of months ago , along with Wynnes gold to encourage the dpf filter to unsoot , it worked a treat , huge plooms of smoke once it got a good blast up a steep hill several times . That car now is as good as when the owner bought it 7 years ago he reports.

Those 3-6 TDV6 chain driven engines were bomb proof,they were are the best engine to have,it’s Not the vehicles it’s the people who neglect the maintenance then moan about how bad they are all because they couldn’t be bothered to look after them properly. People buy these vehicles without a thought about how much they need to spend on them,fuel consumption depends on how you drive them,round the town work is probably 18/20 mpg,cruising on the motorway at the legal limit 30 is nearer the mark,these are lively engines so it’s easy to get carried away and will affect fuel consumption,the thing weighs over 2 tons and performs like a sports car. The 4/4 with its 8speed gearbox I found disappointing,bags of power especially for towing but it’s easy to overheat the gearbox oil when using all that power when doing so. Buying a misused abused one with mega miles on the clock that’s not been serviced properly can be a money pit that just never ends because of it’s previous lack of maintenance but they are a beautiful vehicle to drive and run if looked after properly,you can’t run these vehicles on peanuts, they can be very expensive to repair and in some circumstances more than the car is worth.
