I love how Barkley becomes an honorary VGR crew member. He managed to come up with multiple means of contacting voyager. And he was on the Enterprise E as well.

This was almost as much fun as the episode itself (if not more because of the chat). One of my favorites. Thank you.

I think program number nine is Barclay eating cheesecake with The Golden Girls.

You know, it's always amazing how folks think about stuff in these reviews, whether it's our hosts, the Associate Producers in the FFA or the Live Chat with @ChatPack. This episode is 'comedic" in intent yet it truly dives into a very deep subject for a lot of us. The whole "Social Misfit" that many of us grew up as due to our extremely varied interests and the way we dealt with those around us in our geek/nerddom. Definitely appreciated what folks shared and how others responded. ONE LOVE to #ChatPack, The Next Generation of #ChatFam!!

In fact His first major (but not actual first) episode in VGR, Pathfinder, it makes me cry every time. He put his whole career on the line to contact voyager. In a way I feel like it has a NAM not for a person, but this episode. It talks about holo-addiction and I know it's talking about this one.

15:00 In general TNG actually prepared me for the Generative AI technology of now, since the Holodeck is pretty much Generative AI technology: You formulate a prompt, and it generates an environment, a story and characters for you - you could call the Holodeck also "EnvironmentGPT". The same goes with the replicator, which generates objects in relation to a formulated prompt ("ObjectGPT"). The ship's computer is basically ChatGPT with voice interface. And the univeral translator is also Generative AI, "noise cancelling" the original voice out and replacing it with a generated voice (after a short training phase) in your language in real time (which is developed right now, BTW). TNG showed how Generative AI as technology is enhancing our everyday life. That's also why I am neither surprised or overwhelmed or scared by it, since I saw it in action from 1987 in TNG to 2001 in VOY.

30:00 The character of Barclay shows the typical symptoms of someone dealing with schizoid personality disorder, including the way his environment reacts towards them.

One interesting thing I thought about was "who recreates people they already know?" While it's never been to this extent, I've played some games where you can name characters and I choose the names of friends and family. Especially in the game FTL. But it's definitely not like this. lol

I'm actually surprised by how much you like this episode. There is so much cringe in it. I loved it as a kid because I can relate to it a little too well. As an adult I don't like it as much........because it reminds me of how much cringe I used to be in the past. There were times where I crossed lines I regret crossing. I relate to Barkley now for being shy, but I used to relate to him then for doing things I should have had the common sense not to do.

I have never liked this episode - the holodeck scenes and their use of the Troi character always made me cringe - however I have taken a second look at it and I am pleased I did. I love how Dwight Schultz characterized Barclay in all his iterations, from Holodeck Barclay to Real Life Barclay to Barclay at the end of the episode, his body language was different each time. I noticed that Picard was quick to want the nickname stamped out. Geordie was slower to put a stop to it but he got there before the end. I felt for Barclay both in the Broccoli scene and when he was describing his struggles in work and social situations. Guinan's advice was as usual on point (though I thought her outfit was made out of towelling 🤨) I liked the conference in Engineering and I loved that Barclay got to help save the day 🎉 (and I noticed his body language changed there). I noticed early in the episode Duffy? mentioned the flow capacitors, but in the holodeck scene with Troi , Barclay called them FLUX capacitors. Was that a goof, or a nod to another franchise? Anyone else notice that? And yes, if you are interrupting someone's holodeck fantasy, you need to knock first.

oh yeah the technobabble. Normally I like technobabble. But this time I had a problem with it. On one hand a fluxed capacitor doesn't exist. There is no such thing. There isn't going to ever be such a thing. This was explained to me in college. flux is a term for inductors. They have nothing to do with capacitors. Anyway.......but a fluxed capacitor was the time travel device in back to the future. It's a reference to that. So kind of mixed feelings this time.

Maybe because I have some social anxieties I've always related to Barclay. Is it wrong to make a holodeck of his co-workers, absolutely and I'm not saying otherwise. But I took this as him expressing his feelings toward them or how he sees them. Riker is kind of an ass most of the time, I can see why he would make the butt of the joke, Wesley is know it all and he has a crush on Troi. He wasn't intending anyone to see it of course.

Lieutenant Barclay episodes always make me uncomfortable, and I’m fairly thick skinned and averse to trigger warnings.
