@@leandrotarsia7212 yes he meant that, but you can, actually you CAN re-start the whole piece, but eventually deadlines cant wait, is something one is capable of doing, via sharp blade to take the paint off, or another layer of white/the new color/the correction, i get its way faster in a digital drawing to change stuff, at the point of being disposable, im into traditional handmade art, so yes you can do it, its just not efficient in todays time (also requires presition and planning).

In my humble opinion the art is top notch as illustrations, but in comic book form they lose a lot of the movement pen and ink style pages have. That goes the same for other incredible artists like Gabrielle Delotto, Jay Anacleto, Esad Ribic and many others that approach a page by a painter's perspective and they do pen and ink work. =/... I wonder if its just me.

I love that he says that all these modern costumes are missing the point. It's exactly how I feel. It has always just struck me as nonsense done to placate people who feel they have to think a certain way in order to be "grown-up". These are superheroes. Nothing about them needs to be realistic.
@Shendue
@Shendue 3 жыл бұрын
I've met and talked a bit with Neal Adams. He seems to think differently. While he certainly draws the same way, outlining muscles and the human figure in a very classic way, he prided himself in being an actual costume designer. He mentioned he created actual costumes for teathre and cinema. And he said that he approached superheroes with the same mentality. When he created costumes, he thought of them as something that might have been actually worn by a superhero, which means he added pockets to store items, he made boots strong and with reinforced soles, like military equipment, etc.

@@SayAhh this is most definitely painting. Even the great artists start with an underpainting or sketch of their subject. The sketch is supposed to give you guidelines as you paint in the semi-realistic style that Alex Ross uses. The difference between painting and coloring is that - for comics at least - the colorist is a different person entirely from the original artist. Meaning the artist draws the layout and sometimes does their own line art, but then usually hands the art to a colorist to add color either by digital or traditional means. The colorist relies on cues from the original artist for what color palette to use and where colors go. Painting usually - not absolutely always - is completed start to finish by the same artist.

It would be a very long video then. Alex was using the glazing technique by painting layers. Each layer needs to be fully dry in order for the paint not to bleed together - unless he specifically wanted them to blend together. I'm actually amazed he seemed to paint this in one session! Definitely several hours were spent on this painting just on the watercolors. His technique is fascinating to watch and I'd also love an uncut version.

In a few short minutes, Alex Ross has demonstrated a fundamental understanding of the mythic & colorful iconicism of superheroes, how they resonate with us as human beings, how comic book art and illustrators represent that, and the challenge of adapting the idea of that "pure form" to live action. No wonder his work has such a classic feel. He understands how to represent these characters in their purest form, from their purest ideas from which those forms are derived. Amazing

I love this! Thank you for posting the full video. The grace at which you work alongside the commentary is amazing. I’ve just started painting with gouache. Hopefully you decide to post more full paintings in the future.
