Actually in germany there is even sort of a Haiku society and they officially declared don't have to use 5-7-5 anymore, because this rule is best for the japanese style of how words sound, but not really western, german word sounds especially. Instead the rule is to try to make the Haiku 17 silbles or less (preferably less) long. So something like this is totaly accepted as a haiku here: The stream Suddenly closeness -- Christening of the ship Sometimes germans stii use 5-7-5 but often it slightly varies
