I always take notes when I am learning from Rick's videos, so I'd love to share them with you all: Tip 5 - 0:58 --> Utilise your legs in conjunction with your arms • Numerous ways to use your legs e.g. pinching, creating a fulcrum, pulling, pushing etc • Advanced players use their legs extensively • If uke does a kneecut, pinch with your knees to trap his knee --> keeping him at bay • Ultimately, you want to use your legs to create connections Tip 4 - 2:55 --> Hip escapes • It's not just about the technique, it's about when you do it • Hip escapes come in when uke gets past your knees • You want to develop the intuition to immediately hip escape aggressively as soon as they get past your kneecaps, don't let them anchor their weight onto you Tip 3 - 4:30 --> Hide your arms • Tuck in your arms whenever you can --> prevents underhooks, crossfaces and denies opportunities of uke gaining control of you • Extremely valuable when you are in bad positions e.g. your back is taken, your guard's getting passed • This causes your opponent to expend more energy Tip 2 - 6:27 --> Learn to bridge • Roy Harris once said: this is one of the unstoppable moves in BJJ • The key to escaping side control is having a strong bridge • Find a heavy partner and have them hold you down with side control: 1. Start with your frame: forearm against chin 2. Feet close to butt, be on the balls of your feet 3. Bridge forcefully 4. Use this to gauge how strong your bridge is Tip 1 - 9:29 --> Focus on control, NOT the submission • Typically people lose their positions when they are attempting to transition or do a submission (you create too much space) • Instead, focus on control • Realistically, aim to focus on maintaining the position from white to blue belt. Submissions are more reliable when you have positional dominance (typically attained at purple belt) • Your degree of control over your opponent's movement options affects your submission rate" Rick's motto: POSITIONAL DOMINANCE BEFORE SUBMISSION

Nice, thanks for that. I noticed when he had the frame under his chin in side control, he also had his hand on his shoulder, presumably to help relieve the shoulder pressure?

Years ago at a seminar Gustavo Froes told us to "do 63 hip escapes, if you do 63 hip escapes you should be clear." 😂❤

This is so clear and foundational. Valuable for any level. Focus on control: When I watch elite black belts rolling, it is 95% about control. Submissions rarely happen. But 95% of videos focus on submissions! What is great about this video is that it is all about control and body mechanics. We need more of that.

Hello, greetings from Colombia. It is a pleasure to follow him on social networks and KZfaq. This video came at a special time in my life and in bjj practice. I am 41 years old and 6 months ago I managed to obtain my blue belt. I have had certain feelings of frustration and I have felt lost. But this video came as if from the sky and clarified many things and redirected my way of training. Thank you very much and my respect to you and your teachers. I hope you can continue providing this type of advice to those of us who are starting out in the world of bjj.
