I would recommend listening to the version "Hallowed be thy name" from the awesome live album "Live After Death" Which was released much earlier on in their career (In your own time obviously because you've already reacted to this) But you'll very quickly pick up on the difference in the length of time Bruce holds on to the notes. I would like to take you up on your offer to suggest an early song from Maiden and by god if "Phantom of the Opera" doesn't show you just how much talent these guys had early on nothing will! It was on their first Album and it's still my favorite Maiden song even after all these years It's early Metal, Punk and I personally believe the very first Thrash song. React to it and tell me I'm wrong. Look forward to seeing your reaction!

Bruce Dickinson (the vocalist) is over 50 years old here (he is born in 1958, this was shot in...uuh... 2010'ish ?). If you want to hear him at his peak, there is a live 1982 recording of this same song here on KZfaq. As for "all the guitars", one of the guitarists (Adrian Smith) left the band in the 90's and was replaced by Janick Gers. When Smith later re-joined Iron Maiden, instead of getting rid of Gers, they kept all 3 guitarists going forward.

Bruce Dickinson is an effin beast. Look at some of the early live shows, you'll see him running all over the stage like a mad man. He's old school, uses stage placed feedback monitors instead of the in-ear monitors. Put him in the same class as Rob Halford, David Draiman, and yes, Ozzy. there's a reason these guys will sing at a high level until the day they die. They know what the frack they are doing. \m/

I actually prefer some elements of this version to the undoubtedly more powerful Hammersmith Apollo one. Although Bruce couldn't hit those high notes he used to have been able to, there's a certain pathos to this version and he's more emotional and telling the story here, and the ending is absolutely beautiful with those vibratos. Both performances have their own merit in my eyes and I like both for different reasons.

I loved watching your reaction as always! When it comes to Iron Maiden, they set the bar for live metal performances and have done so for decades! They have a huge following and are absolutely one of the biggest bands in the world still to this day. To help understand and appreciate how huge and amazing. I suggest checking out the docu-movie this performance came from, 'Flight 666'. I promise you it's worth it. I would say even more so for someone like yourself who is currently exploring the most important metal bands of our time. It's a 101 lesson in Maiden and also just how huge of an influence metal music like Maiden still has on people all over the world. The lead singer, Bruce Dickerson definitely has an amazing voice as you witnessed. And, he is also known for delivering a very over the top, demonstrative performerance for every show. I would also bet this is why he was wearing those crazy pants, and did so for every show on that tour. It's just another way to help be more easily noticed by the fans all the way in the back! Dickerson is someone who believes in huge hand and arm gestures. Making himself as big as he can be on stage in his performance to ensure every fan, even the very last fans all the way in the last row will experiences the best live show possible!

I've been listening to Maiden since 1982, probably before you were born, so I'm pretty versed on them. Bruce uses ear plugs and I don't know why Bruce doesn't use an ear monitor, my guess, Bruce is old school. Iron Maiden current are: Bruce Dickinson - Vocals Born: August 7, 1958 (age 64 years) Started with Iron Maiden in 1981, left in 1993 and rejoined in 1999 and present singer Steve Harris - Bassist and Founder Born: March 12, 1956 (age 68 years), Started the band in 1975 and has never left Dave Murray - Guitarist Born: December 23, 1956 (age 65 years), 1976-1977, 1978- present Adrian Smith - Guitarist Born: February 27, 1957 (age 66 years), 1980-1990, 1999-present Janick Gers - Guiarist Born: January 27, 1957 (age 66 years), 1990 - present Nicko McBrain - Drums Born: June 5, 1952 (age 70 years), 1982 - present The next songs I'd recommend, in no particular order, when you do Iron Maiden again, are: Phantom of the Opera (Live at Rainbow 1980) Rime of the Ancient Mariner Live Flight 666 Where Eagles Dare (Live At Ullevi, Sweden) The Longest Day (about D-Day) Revelations (lyric video) The Clansman - (Rock In Rio 2001) Dance Of Death - En Vivo! as well as any of the ones listed below. Of course there are other songs others will recommend, but since this is my list, this is the ones I recommend. One reactor on KZfaq I helped through his "Maiden Voyage" as we called it, he ended up doing all the songs on their 17 studio albums and most of their cover songs. Now his favorite band. Highlight of songs and what they are about that all that I'd recommend are: From Iron Maiden album------ Phantom of the Opera - A must for live version Strange World (this one will be totally different Iron Maiden) From Killers album------ Murders in the Rue Morgue (Very loosely influenced by Edgar Allen Poe's short story, a story of a fugitive being sought for murder) Genghis Khan (an instrumental - perfect for air drumming) Innocent Exile (continues the theme of Murders in the Rue Morgue of an unjustly accused fugitive) Killers (A journey into the twisted mind of a deranged killer) Prodigal Son(about a repentant man reminiscent of the prodigal son parable found in Luke 15 of the bible) Purgatory(lyrics of song read like a poem) Drifter (focuses on the possibility of new beginnings) From The Number of the Beast album ------ Invaders (It graphically depicts the violence and horror of a defense against a Viking invasion) The Prisoner (based on the UK television series that ran briefly in the late 1960’s) 22 Acacia Avenue (The continuation of Charlotte the Harlot) The Number of the Beast (Inspired by a dream Bassist Steve Harris had after watching the movie the Omen2) Run to the Hills (about the European arrival in America told from the perspective of both the oppressed Cree and the invading white soldiers) Hallowed be Thy Name (about a man who is about to be put to death and what he goes through) From Piece of Mind album ------ Where Eagles Dare (based on an Alistair Maclean novel, (1967), and film (1968) about a WWII rescue of an American general from a Nazi stronghold in the Bavarian Alps Revelations (Starts with the Hymnal from Oh God of Earth and Alter, the next two verses on the Hindu philosophy, the third verse in Yoga a snake called Kundalini that lives at the base of your spinal cord, during meditation a spiritual entity is created symbolizing the transcendental union with God) Flight of Icarus (loosely based on the ancient Greek myth of Icarus) The Trooper (based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854,which took place during the Crimean War) To Tame a Land (the song relays the story of Paul Atreides, Paul Muad'Dib, from the book Dune by Frank Herbert) From Powerslave album ------ Aces High (about aircraft dog fighting between the British and German fighter pilots of WWII) 2 Minutes to Midnight - About the Doomsday clock for the End of the World Back in The Village (The continuation of the song The Prisoner) Powerslave (about an arrogant pharaoh in his dying hours, he can't understand why he's about to die and fights it in vain) Rime of the Ancient Mariner - (From the poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (story about about an ocean voyage) From Somewhere in Time album------- Wasted Years (A song about the admonition to appreciate the present and not to take things for granted) The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (based on a short story of Alan Sillitoe which was made into a 1962 film Alexander the Great (About the story of Alexander the Great From 7th Son of a 7th Son album (a concept album)------ Infinite Dreams (Detailing someone who is tormented by paranormal dreams and nightmares) The Evil That Men Do (Title taken from a quote in Shakespeare Julius Caesar but the song is unrelated) The Clairvoyant (relates the reflections of the 7th Son of the 7th Son on his life and his powers) From Fear of the Dark album------ Wasting Love (About the emptiness of relationships without love. Another Maiden ballad) Fear of the Dark (About being afraid of the dark and the things in the dark that might be there - absolute a live performance for this one) From Brave New World album------ The Wicker Man (about the apathy of our modern society and our egotistic disinterest of what is happening until something happens to us) Ghost of the Navigator (The lyrics are a metaphor of life, with the ship sailing west towards the setting sun representing death) Brave New World (Loosely based on the 1932 novel by Aldous Huxley) Dream of Mirrors (Yet another song about reoccurring and maybe premonitory dreams) Out of the Silent Planet (Supposedly inspired by the 1956 science -fiction film Forbidden Planet) From Dance of Death album------ No More Lies (The lyrics deal with someone knows his time has come with the possibility of reincarnation) Dance of Death (Orinally inspired by Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film The Seventh Seal - Another one to do as a live performance) Paschendale (about the Battle of Passchendaele during WWI) From A Matter of Life and Death------ Brighter than a Thousand Suns (About the dawn of the nuclear bomb age) The Longest Day (about the WWII Normandy Invasion) Out of the Shadows (About being born)

Bruce was a powerhouse in the 80s and still is now. One of the best voices in metal. It’s not too far of a fetch to compare with Nightiwsh as Bruce is known for being operatic in his style. If you watch and old version of this song it has to be the Hammersmith performance.

Having seen Maiden many tines over the years, I can attest that Bruce rarely, ever puts in a bad performance. He's been doing that for a long time and is also a throat cancer survivor. Ya wanna check similar type vocalists then check out Geoff Tate, ex Queensryche, and Michael Kiske of Helloween, phenomenal vocalists.

Before they really got big, Bruce was on the short list of the British Olympic Fencing Team, the band took off and he had to withdraw, but he still keeps his hand in by fighting Eddie on stage. He left the band in the 90s, apart from releasing solo albums, he made a living flying commercial passenger jets, he also founded his own company servicing passenger jets at Cardiff Airport. He re-joined the band in 99 I think. For this world tour they chartered a Boeing 727 for him to fly, and their air traffic control call sign was Air Atlantique 666, hence the flight 666 reference. For their last world tour they up graded to a Boeing 747 Jumbo jet, and Bruce had to up grade his licence from 2 to 4 engine.

Bruce Dickinson, the lead singer of Iron Maiden, was nicknamed 'Air raid siren' because of his high range vocals... but he was not their original vocalist. He had ear monitors, just smaller ones... Dickinson joined Maiden in 1982; his vocals w/ his previous band Samson were not as challenging... It was working w/ producer Martin Birch who pushed Dickinson to widen his vocal range when recording his first Iron Maiden album 'The number of the Beast' in '82 ... It became their first UK #1 album (Maiden's 3rd album)... Steve Harris (bass) formed Iron Maiden in 1975... he wanted a band that could play the original songs that he was writing, which had progressive elements, guitar harmonies and complicated time changes. The band had a raw sound in their early days as a pub band in London... The band went through a few members and singers, but eventually Dave Murray (guitar) became a stable member by 1977... They got Paul Di'Anno (vocals) to join the band, who had a gruff, bluesy voice and he gave Iron Maiden a punk rock edge that made them incredibly popular in the UK before they even had a record out. Signed finally in 1979, they recorded their debut album w/ Clive Burr (drums) and Dennis Stratton (guitar) joining... They also introduced their mascot 'Eddie the Head' - a ghoulish, shriveled corpse w/ hollow eyes who appeared on every Iron Maiden album cover in various forms. The self-titled Iron Maiden album in 1980 shocked everyone by charting at #4 in the UK... Adrian Smith (guitar) replaced Stratton for the 2nd album 'Killers' in 1981... However, the stress of touring constantly as Maiden played Japan and N. America for the first time, burned out Paul Di'Anno... he parted ways w/ the band in 1981. Bruce Dickinson (vocals) replaced Di'Anno and his vocals streamlined Iron Maiden's sound and they got even more popular in 1982 w/ the album 'The number of the Beast'... Nicko McBrain (drums) joined in 1983 for the 4th album 'Piece of Mind'... and Iron Maiden were one of the biggest heavy metal bands in the world as they toured arenas in 1984 for the album 'Powerslave'... and dominated the 80's. In 1990, Janick Gers (guitar) replaced Adrian Smith and Maiden released 'No prayer for the dying' (1990) and 'Fear of the dark' (1992)... Unfortunately, Bruce Dickinson had grown weary of the band's workload and announced in 1993 that he was leaving the band for a solo career. Iron Maiden recruited Blaze Bayley (vocals) for their 1995 album 'The X Factor'... but it was a darker, heavier record and fans did not warm up to Blaze's gruff vocals... The next album 'Virtual XI' in 1998 became Maiden's poorest-selling record. The band was also progressing in a more epic musical direction, and Blaze's vocals were not ideal for that sound, so he was fired in 1999... Bruce Dickinson's solo career was also selling poorly... so the decision was made for both Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith (guitar) to reunite w/ Iron Maiden and make it a 3-guitar band for the first time... Their 2000 album 'Brave new world' was a return to popularity and reintroduced Iron Maiden to a new generation. For the last 2 decades, Maiden's records have gotten more progressive and epic, compared to their 80's records... but their popularity has only been increasing worldwide. U can check out Iron Maiden's big singles - 'Wasted years'... '2 minutes to midnight'... 'Run to the hills'... 'The evil that men do'... 'Fear of the dark' (live version)🤘🤘🔥🔥 Their epic tracks - 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' ... 'The sign of the cross' (live version)... 'If eternity should fail' ... 'For the greater good of God' Songs w/ Paul Di'Anno on vocals - 'Phantom of the Opera'... 'Wrathchild'... 'Remember tomorrow'... 'Killers'... 🤘🤘 Songs w/ Blaze Bayley on vocals - 'Man on the edge'... 'Futureal'... 'Virus' ... 'The Clansman'... 🤘🤘

Not going to bother with scanning through other comments because I'm sure there are many that say this isn't even close to the best live version of the song. Hammersmith 1982 for the best. That said, I saw this song performed by the band in Fall 2022 and the vocals were better than this 2008 performance. Saw them again a few weeks back in Prague, where they didn't play this one, but the vocals were a notch better than what I saw in 2022. A few months shy of 65, and he's the youngest in the band. A complete thrill to see them still doing this at a level that bands half their age would kill to achieve.

When it comes to Iron Maiden and Nightwish. Well, Finland and Iron Maiden have a _long_ history. Before the Iron Curtain collapsed Finland was at the ass end of the European tour stages and a small country. Most big bands never bothered to come at all. But young Iron Maiden did, and was met with such enthusiasm that they promised right on the stage to come to Finland on every European tour they'll ever do. And they kept that promise. So when Finland transformed from a country of tons of dedicated metal fans to a country of tons and tons of metal _bands_, Iron Maiden was a strong influence, because it's one of the masters everyone had seen and ended up imitating. For decades it was almost impossible to find a Finnish guitarist who would not have been able to play the Iron Maiden classics right from memory. They've also always been a band that can put up a _show_, with gigantic backdrops for every song in the set to Bruce changing costumes to play the characters to the huge zombie-like mascot Eddie walking the stage. So yes, practically every metal band in Finland founded in the 20th century was more or less influenced by them. And Bruce is like a walking breath support. He's one of the Unholy Trinity with Rob Halford and Ronnie James Dio, the defining voices of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, usually nowadays called just heavy metal and dubbed an air raid siren in the early years. All three are extremely gifted and skilled singers, setting the standard for melodic metal vocals pretty high.

Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. Although fluid in the early years of the band, the line-up for most of the band's history has consisted of Harris, lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson, drummer Nicko McBrain, and guitarists Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers. As pioneers of the new wave of British heavy metal movement, Iron Maiden released a series of UK and US Platinum and Gold albums, including 1980's debut album, 1981's Killers, and 1982's The Number of the Beast - its first album with Bruce Dickinson, who replaced Paul Di'Anno as lead singer. The addition of Dickinson was a turning point in their career, establishing them as one of heavy metal's most important artists.[2] The Number of the Beast is among the most popular heavy metal albums of all time, having sold almost 20 million copies worldwide

There are a million-and-one things I can say about Maiden because they're my favorite band but I'll try to keep it short 😂. First off, they have been around for over 40 years and have a vast catalog that rarely falters imo (many will not agree.) This performance is from 2008 and is fantastic but I highly recommend that you do the same song from the 1982 Hammersmith show. This is my personal favorite song ever and is often considered their greatest track. They have plenty of great, professionally recorded live concerts beginning from 1980. I may be biased but I do consider them the single greatest live-act in history and I think you can at least understand why. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you continue your Maiden journey. Up the Irons!
