Hi Trevor, having a GREAT week we see, We really see the improvement for that base plate of the tail stock. Mistakes happen but this is a prototype we think in sense after this first machine modify build you could come in behind it with refined component s with discoveries and yield the perfected mini lathe. Nice lapping job, it is appearing well. Oilers they are a great thought and addition now that is thinking ahead. Thank you for this share, will be back for your next release. Lance & Patrick.

Great job looks awesome. Mine came with oiler fitted standard, like the Way you fitted it in the cap head bolt looks good I think. I just had my headstock apart and upgraded fitted metal gears and annular contact bearings . Also drilled to grease ports on the top of the headstock to make inspection and greasing easy. Thanks nice update can’t wait to see the next video. Have a good day all the best Jace.

Thanks for the example of a job done properly. For the lapping, I think when I get there I will build a power lapper. Too much work by hand.

Oiling grooves would have made lapping a bit faster.. and lapping the cross slide at the same time.. I do like the bigger 'footprint' of the tail stock as I'm thinking of doing so, but I'm adding shim grooves and holes to epoxy in the final setting ( I bought a second tail stock for this).. and your oiler bolt, well it gives a bigger reserve...

Hey Trevor. It,s a shame about the Machining Mishap ( F##k up ). Looks like everything was going well up until this point. Good job on the lapping too. I cheated and jumped ahead to watch your latest video. Looking forward to checking out the rest of the video,s in your collection. Thanks for the video. Peter.

For future reference, sewing machine oil or water would work with the spray on adhesive. WD 40 is well known for its ability to dissolve the glue used for sticky labels, just spray it on, rub it in and a few minutes later label and glue will rub off...

I understand your concern about the time it will take to lap in the underside of the bed.. it will be very slow going. How about planing the bulk of the material off? Make up a tool holder block that you can fit to the underside of the cross slide carriage. Set a lathe tool to the thinnest part of the over hang and push the cross slide the length of the bed. After that, jockey the tool over a hair and make another pass. Not fast..but a lot faster than trying to remove the material with abrasive paper. Cheers from NC/USA

G'Day Mate, thats a really good idea. I think that would have saved quite some time. I've actually just finished that task & it was quite gruelling. I figure I have about 6-8 hours in it. I just need to do the production work on the footage & try to get it down to something watchable. Spoiler, it turned out really good. Thanks for the Comment, much appreciated.

You can use wax or Soap. I like soap. Not liquid soap. Don’t rub it on heavy. One or two light passes.

Hi Trevor, Excellent video. I admire your patience and perseverance on this project. I like the idea of the larger footplate for the tail stock, but I wonder if it might cause a problem. The new base plate appears to extend a bit further under the quill than the original base plate. A problem that I encounter when I am turning a piece using a live center in the tail stock is that the back of the saddle bumps into the foot plate of tail stock when I move the saddle far enough to the right to position a tool past the right end of the work near the live center with a tool to start a turning pass. To get the tool past the end of the work to start a cut, you'll have to crank the quill out to near its maximum extension. Cranking the tail stock quill out too far reduces the rigidity of your set up, which can severely affect the precision and finish of your work. Also, there is a limit to how far you can extend the quill. If the base plate extends further under the quill than the original base plate, it will exacerbate this problem.

Hi David, Yes I agree. I'll see how it goes once the lathe is in use. I did consider this when making the foot plate, but after looking at all of the different versions of the mini lathe tailstocks that were produced, i figured it may be okay. I can always modify it later & cut off the protruding 15mm. Then shift the front locking plate bolt to under the front of the tailstock. I appreciate your comment. Cheers Trevor.

@@TheAussieShed My first thought was now you have shorten the workable bed length. Leaving the little oiler high seems like it would have been better than the now big bolt projection. Now it needs a matching paint job. 👍

All you need is to drill a smaller hole fellow by drilling with a 6mm deep enough to hold the oil push cap but not all the way through. I think that will work. BTW, can you share a link to ebay where you got your push oil cap. I try searching but can't find. Thanks for sharing.

so now you will be able to oil the barrel, that could be done from the outside, but still have no way to oil the threads.......

Hi Jan, when the barrel is wound out slightly the oil drops directly onto the threads. Cheers.
