One of the most unforgettable moments in the history of the Oscars, when they finally announced Michelle Yeoh’s name as the winner for Best Actress!…I burst into tears with a big smile on my face! What a night!

I feel for history, legacy and performance, she deserved But I thought Cate was Faaaar better in performance alone. That being said, still happy about it But, again, they took a huge gamble OR Knew the results by getting Halle Berry there for 2 POC. Makes one ponder???

My favorite moments, besides Jamie Lee remembering her parents and John Travolta almost crying, was when Ariana Debose cried announcing Ke Huy Quan as the winner, when the winner of song sung Carpenters and when Michelle Yeoh, Jessica Chastain and Halle Berry walked away together hugging each other.

When they said Michelle Yeoh, i screamed so loud. My cats went running. I also cried. I'm not of Asian descent but I know that between all of POC, in solidarity, all wanted this. It was so REFRESHING to see. So well deserved and also, I hope this does shift the tide. More international actors need to be recognized.

Jaime did deserve that oscar due to the range of her character. One minute she was this strict accountant, then a villainous fighter, then a tender lover with hot dog hands. If we giving Michelle an award for her various forms of a character, why can’t we award the same for Jaimie?

I thought so too. Jamie did an excellent job in EEAAO... the variety of roles she played. I thought Stephanie was brilliant in the movie as well, but I had a feeling it would go either Jamie or Angela. I also love Angela as well.

My take is that the recurring theme of this year's Oscars is the fact that film is a collaborative medium and as such, sits on the shoulders of many, not just actors and directors. My favourite moments: - Yeoh and Fraser's speeches - the Naatu Naatu dance recreating the scene from the movie to a T - Del Toro's speech on the importance of animation - the Daniels speeches especially the meta-commentary on if their son is watching he should not think this is the measure of his father's expectation "this is not normal!" Cracked me up! - the editing win for EEAAO, that guy sounded so chill like he was talking to you at a party instead of the Dolby theatre audience "this is my second film guys..." haha! - the very tasteful In Memoriam - Jimmy Kimmel emulating hosting greats like Billy Crystal with keeping the humour relevant and subtle and not overly extending his screen time for some dumb skit. And finally, the pacing! Although I do miss the ceremonies where you actually get a feel for each movie and performance. The last few Oscars have only offered supercuts and split-second glimpses, but that is very of the time. At least they aired all categories live. So yeah, one of the best Oscars in a while. :)

My favorite moment was Lady Gaga's performance of "Hold My Hand." I think that song is pretty good, but this more stripped down rendition made me teary-eyed. I also like how she introduced the song and how she performed it in a sweatshirt and ripped jeans in a room full of people in suits and dresses. I'm biased because I've been a Gaga fan for 13 years, but still, it was a damn good performance. It's one of those performances I'm going to watch when I feel down.

YES agree it's been a great awards season and you've added so much to our enjoyment Brian, particularly in helping us to shape far more informed and considered opinions , which for me definitely adds so much more pleasure to a situation where we judge any creative art!! I just want to add one of my top moments from Sunday night to your list, where Jimmy Kimmel roasted the audience reaction to the Will Smith fiasco last year... that was absolutely one of my favourite moments and a very well done and very well deserved roasting it was too!!! Many thanks Brian for this entire season !!

We don't often get groundswell support for a movie (fans, critics, and Hollywood itself) like we did for EEAAO. Previous examples are probably titanic and LOTR ROTK of the top of my head. I think that support contributed to the success of oscars 95. Arthouse filmmakers should consider how they can make their films in a way that can capture the wider audience and not just us cinephiles. Vice versa for commercial film makers!

My friend and I cried so hard when Michelle Yeoh won. So glad EEAAO won in the seven categories for which they were heavy contenders. Loved JLC's win as an acknowledgment of her years doing genre work and her parents Oscar noms as well. If Hsu didn't win, I wanted it to go to JLC. The most cathartic Oscars since Parasite's wins. I love when a truly daring film wins Best Picture. I'm going to pushback a bit on the downplaying of JLC's performance. She did so much in that film and showed more range than many expected. Love that she incorporated touches of horror into her performance. Seeing JLC and Michelle be so fully committed in their lesbian hot dog romance was surprisingly touching. JLC's Oscar winning scene for me was toward the very end where Deirdre sits with Evelyn and is empathetic when she doesn't have to be. She gives Evelyn an extension, reschedules their meeting, and does not press assault charges. It's a beautiful scene done very well and serves as lesson in how when you see someone having a rough time, extend them grace and empathy instead of punishing them further. It's the empathetic performances of Quan and JLC that clinched their wins. As for the big Oscar bait shut outs, I wasn't wowed by any of them compared to EEAAO. Tar was too tedious, icy, and contrived. Banshees was too small and had a messy third act. The Fabelmans didn't feel fresh enough, was too sentimental and navel gazing. Elvis... well, Baz remains polarizing, Martin is the one who keeps his films palatable. Butler didn't really look like Elvis and he held on to that stupid accent after. May the success of EEAAO allow for artists taking more risks instead of going for what they think will best serve as reliable and successful Oscar bait. EEAAO's triumph is a message to other filmmakers: speak to now, take real chances, and give us something we haven't seen!

I know we all knew that Curtis was more than a possibility to win, but when they called her name, I shouted, “Oh my God!” And even Curtis was visibly shocked, mouthing “Oh, shut up!” I cried listening to her speech. And even after I’m still in disbelief that it happened. Brian I agree that it is one of those head scratcher moments that we will look back on. However her speech was amazing and I am none the less happy. Michelle Yeoh was a nail biter, and I breathed a sigh of relief when they called her name. It was never a certainty, but it will go down in history as one of the all time greatest performances in cinema. Thank you for keeping us entertained and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us this coming year!

For me, Jamie Lee Curtis saying "to the hundreds of thousands of genre fans...WE JUST WON AN OSCAR" (*note, that's not a direct quote, I shorted it for brevity) was simply incredible. I love the ORIGINAL 1978 HALLOWEEN (her 1st film) and she has gone out of her way to recognize that film and it's importance to her career and her love for the fans. Thanking her fans, her HORROR FILM fans is so special to me, personally. I teared up when she mentioned her fans and her acknowledging her late parents touched my heart. What a wonderful woman!!!!🥹

@Brian Rowe Video Fabulous! I know you'll probably cover Meryl & Viola's 2012 race in a separate Meryl video. And the bonkers 2020-2021 best actress race would be a fascinating one to revisit with BAFTA eventually cinching the Oscar for Frances McDormand in Nomadland (which is ironic to think of since BAFTA went 0/4 in the acting prizes this year, along with Picture).

Of all the Oscar moments from that night, Brendan Fraser's win and Michelle Yeoh's win were simply the sweetest. For the first time in many years of Oscar's run, that this year it feels good and heartwarming. 1) No 'Holly-woke" political nonsense (although some may felt that way). 2) Jimmy Kimmel was a good host. He is funny, wittty yet still able focus and not sway from the main agenda commanding the ceremony throughout. 3) Overall nominations was fair and competitive. Although some might be speculative but negligible. 4) And of course all the winners are deserving by it's own right. Regardless of its either history making or not, I do think its a fair play and right choice of winners.

I am with you. I jumped and screamed when they announced Michelle Yeoh's name! I also had the feeling Cade might have it since Tar didn't win any award. I first saw Michelle when she was making movies in HK (back in late 80s and 90's). She was one of the few female actresses that would do kung-fu style movies. I thought it was such a sweet moment when Halle Barry presented Michelle the aware. And let's not forget the bond-girl connection that Halle and Michelle both shared!

Great ceremony. I did think there were way too many jokes about the length of the show, or about the Oscars being too long. Funny the first few times, but it got repetitive. Also, some funny jokes about the slap. But then too many jokes about it. Good comedy writers, so didn’t understand the limited themes of the jokes.

Can you do a deeper dive on the Angela Basset robbery? That truly felt criminal.
@AG-qy3su
@AG-qy3su Жыл бұрын
Angela was robbed 30 years ago when she lost for what’s love for to do with it. That was criminal. She deserved that, certainly not for Wakada Forever. I know the black community really wanted that Oscar win for her but the nom was as far as she could get with that role/performance. If Jamie didn’t win, it would have went to either Stephanie or Kerry.

JLC was a legacy win. These do happen, they will always happen. And agreed, JLC was not only not the best in her category, she wasn't even the best in her own film. But she got the Oscar and that is what it is.

Watching the Naatu Naatu performance, I thought 1. Why don't the 2 lead dancers look Indian? 2. Why aren't the 2 lead dancers very good at dancing this dance? Turns out they used a (white) American choreographer and an American dance company, that too with no South Asian representation on the dance team, including the leads. They just picked 2 dancers who could "pass" for Indian - at least to a non Indian audience. Ugh. The Oscar's giveth, and the Oscar's taketh away.

Cate not winning her third Oscar this year (she will in next 10 years) does not take anything away from her. If anything, she should’ve already won her third via Carol.

I've rooted for Michelle Yeoh and somehow I knew she would win but the fact that she kinda threw Cate under the bus, sharing that article saying why she needs the third Oscar anyway..... It was not classy at all! I'm happy for her but that move was so not nice of her.....Cate was always supportive of specially her and her other fellow nominees, I don't think she ever went for winning so that article itself was such a BS.

Although Israel is considered to be apart of the Asian continent, they're not ethically Asian. They identify themselves as Jewish or Arabic. Just because the country is located in a continent does not mean it's their ethnicity. Just like how people in Mexico don't identify themselves as "North American" but hispanics.
