Thank you for the review. I too have had the same Ulterra you feature in the video for the past 2 years and it has broken 6 times... including the first day I used it.... always the trim module that breaks... my warranty is almost expired so I have switched to Terrova... they auto deploy on the Ulterra will spoil you but mine was in the shop as much as it was on my boat

Thanks for pointing out the trim problem. Seems like they would do something to fix that going forward since the Riptide is made for salt water.

Great review brother!! I was wondering how it did for you since I know you guys put hours in. That auto stow and deploy is so temping, but reliability is the most important thing for me. Minn Kota has always given me nightmares. I’ve gone thru dozens. I eventually switched to MotorGuide when they came out with the Xi5. It isn’t very sexy, but it’s deadly reliable. It’s been on 3 boats in 4 years and still purrs. Great job!! Thanks for posting!

Thanks for the tip. Yes, had exactly the same problem recently at 14 months. Belt was stripped as well. Was thinking of making up a cover to keep salt air out while berthed but will now follow your advice and store vertically. Any updates would be most appreciated.

Did the cover work for you? Do you spray the belt with silicone? I am wanting to purchase one so wondering if problems were resolved.

@@joelkotowske8629 yes and yes mate. All working perfectly so far. I only spray the belt about once every two months but just my practice.

Thanks for the Info, I'm getting ready to put an 87 Inch Minn Kota on my 27 Sea Hunt, I was told to stay away from Rhodan since they are made in China, Not too sure about the Motor Guide but I think I need at least an 84 inch for Offshore, I also saw the Taco nav light video which I also have to do.

The main problem about trim module is that contact point underneath, the circle connector didn't do well-preventing waters goes in and make corrosion time by time to the positive and negative wires. I got my friend need to re-welding those wires to the connector disc for over 3 times last year, and finally I know I need to clean every single old solder by using high watt solder iron keep heat up those old solder and make it out of the disc, make sure the surface in "PERFECTLY CLEAN" conditional to re-weld the wires on it. I use lead solder and rosin paste for good results, just like the video about soldering wires by ChrisFix. Then using high-quality silicone to seal all those connections points for better durability. The other Ulterra easy fail point is the cylinder at the port side of the base. The symptom is when you tilting up or down the motor it will shaking up or down, then you might need to take a look with that cylinder, both thread in plastic parts may damage and come off from the cylinder or simply broken. If so just take the parts to some shop to buy the same one to replace it, or go to replace the whole cylinder part. If you didn't care about this the motor at the starboard side will break afterward, by the cylinder works as assist and distributed weight when Ulterra tilting up or down, the main motor was heavy and every pound of weight force to the motor and break it. Hope you guys enjoy this and stay safe on the water!

Shouldn’t you put the heading sensor on the rear gunnel of the boat with direct line of sight to the motor head. Gives the boat the longitudinal information to keep the boat in the directional orientation you want regardless of current or wind?

Thanks so much for this post. I'm going to move my purchase to a Terrova after seeing your video, reading other reviews, and talking to my installer. One big question is where exactly did you mount your batteries? I have a Sea Hunt 225 Ultra and it looks like I may have to give up my portable head area in the console to a false floor to enclose the batteries. Any info or pics appreciated! Thanks again! Henry

You put your puck in the wrong place brother. Needs to be near the center of the boat to really take advantage of it. Keep in mind it is take ing a bearing measurement to try and keep your boat in a particular orientation. By having it right next to the troller motor you might as well not have it installed.

Why should we have to pay for repairs on the tilt if they knowingly acknowledge that there is a flaw in the trim where water won't receed. I've had mine for two weeks and I am having trouble with the trim

Do you regret getting the ulterra vs the terrova? I'm on the fence between the two, but leaning towards the terrova. Seems there are more reviews of on the ulterra going bad after the warranty period. Anyways, Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

scallen2112 hi, I’m getting a 25 foot bay boat. What trolling motor would you get knowing what you know now? Any recommendations on the garmin ? I’m reading reviews on the auto deploy and trim and they are just god awful. Most of my fishing will be in inlets or off shore. Any feed-back would be great. Do you think 60 inch shaft would be good enough and 80 pound thrust? I don’t think I can fit 3 batteries for a trolling motor otherwise I would get 100+ thrust. Thanks

@THEBIGA2300
@THEBIGA2300 4 жыл бұрын
David Devon it really depends on how you fish, I would say if you fished fresh water or never fished in waves over 1-2 ft then yes a 60 would be fine. I had a 60 on my 234 but only went to the 72 because we fish in rougher water with it. Hope this helps

What is the purpose of the black pigtail connector hanging near the power cord??
@jjp95136

I'm considering one for my 17" Arima Sea Ranger. I have to climb up and out to the bow to deploy and stow my current Riptide. I noticed you pushing a power button on the unit's base. Do you have to do that even if you leave the motor connected to power between trips? With my current motor I can either leave it connected to power when not in use, or just connect the power at the beginning of an outing and pushing any key on the remote activates the motor.
@THEBIGA2300
@THEBIGA2300 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you have to push the power button before you use it but it will stay on for probably an hour or two before it cuts off once stowed

Does that long unsupported 72 inch shaft bounce around when you are underway or trailering the boat? It seems like it would vibrate loose at some point.

I have a SH 234 ultra also. I really want the auto deploy as I mainly fish alone and it would make many things much easier. If I keep the screws and bolts clean and free of salt, lube the belt, and store so the trim motor drains, will it work as intended?
@THEBIGA2300
@THEBIGA2300 3 жыл бұрын
I think if you do a good job of washing it then that helps it greatly. If you could get an extended warranty I would tho. I haven’t had any trouble with mine in a year and a half now.

Curious about the trim .. if it is deployed in shallow water , does it stop automatically? Did anyone mention the benefits of lithium grease on that belt? Thanks for the video

I would suggest anyone seeing this video and having similar issues to watch this additional video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hpmhm8V5spPGZ6s.html). It talks about how to maintain the areas of concern with the saltwater Ulterra. It would seem to me that Minn Kota would a) explain this needed maintenance to anyone buying the Ulterra, b) make it easier to access (for maintenance and for simple flushing). The maintenance explained in the video seems crucial to me. 🤷‍♂

Can it tilt before it trims? For instance if you need it to clear a bow rail?
@THEBIGA2300
@THEBIGA2300 Жыл бұрын
So it will trim all the way up before it stows itself and will always deploy with the head all the way up. Then once it locks into place trim down to the last depth it was trimmed to.
