My Aloe bonsai is growing really large! I go back in time to see how it has progressed from the beginning.
Today I remove the older leaves to expose the trunk and aerial roots more.

well if no one talked about it I'm gonna say it. You can actually use the leaves of the aloe vera as a natural hair moisturizer. just cut the leaves in half and crush the insides until it makes a paste. however it's better to test if you have some allergy reaction by putting some of the sap on a small area on your skin. where I live it is very common to have aloes on a garden to get some free moisturizer :)

4:30 "Set the cut aloe leaf upright in a small jar or dish, with the cut side down. After a few minutes, you'll see a red or yellowish liquid draining out of the leaf. This is normal, and it is called aloin. This mucilaginous gel can cause stomach pain and diarrhea, so give it about 10-15 minutes to drain out." aloe should be drained before eating! :)

i bought my girlfriend some bonsai seeds for xmas because i thought it was as nice present, and we planted them once lockdown happened. Turned out they were whyche elm seeds which are entirely innappropriate as bonsai haha, but it it inspired us to grow trees and we have since planted many different seeds and enjoy the growth. The wytch elms are entirely out of control i think we need to plant them in a forest.

I have an aloe vera that was looking like a good bonsai candidate, but it had a pup that took over the pot. I separated the pup and as I was setting the original aloe on the counter it snapped at the trunk. The trunk was hollow, but I replanted the 2 tops in a bonsai pot. Back to square 1......

Very interested in this one! I am curious about how ramification can be developed in this type of plant. I have a spider plant I am trying to develop, inspired by this Aloe bonsai! It does seem to send up pups from the trunk very rarely, but I am not sure what the conditions are that promote that. And the pups don't seem to grow very much at all compared to the main trunk.

I enjoy watching the progression that you have shown over the years in your video because I think it is such an challenging bonsai. I wish you included a picture of the aloe that you had mentioned in the botanical gardens; I’d like to see that. Are you going in a different styling direction than Joshua’s aloe bonsai or do you expect the aerial roots to fuse to the main trunk over time to develop the same trunk thickness as Joshuas? Looks like you are instead rather going into the direction similar to your ficus bonsais. Really nice video. Thank you.

I’ve been enjoying the ‘timeline’ videos. Those photos of Quiver Trees were great! Such majestic ancient trees. ~ A cactus and succulent society member asked me a year ago what plants I collect. I said that I was a generalist but it got me thinking. Since then I’ve decided to concentrate, not exclusively, on collecting species aloes, (not hybrids) . I am including a young Quiver tree, Aloe dichotoma, in my next video. ~ Do you think that you will try to bonsai other aloe species, like maybe a Quiver Tree ?

How do you water the aloe? Same as all trees? The growth is really impressive.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have the Aloe in good free draining soil and the soil usually dries out by the end of each day. Aloes tend to get a large root system very quickly and they can take up a lot of water if they are getting good sun. I mist my Aloes twice a day also. Every time I water my Aloe, I'm also fertilizing it too, with a very small amount, about a pinch of 20-20-20 in 2 liters of water. You do have to be careful to let the soil dry out between watering's and adjust the amount of water you give it. On a dark cloudy day, I might just mist the plant and on a nice warm sunny day, it might get two watering's a day.

yea lets just be honest with ourselves... No matter how hard you apply bonsai techniques to an aloe plant, it never really becomes a bonsai. To be bonsai is to be a miniature version of a full size plant. In the case of aloe however, the miniature version is just a regular full size plant. Sorry it doesn't work as a bonsai, but still a very nice plant.
