Whenever Sir Nigel here says anything about taking it easy on the roots, I think I can hear all the other trees in the background laugh, while the current subject drops a curse word

Glad to see this get some root work done! I wish I'd had the time to work on this tree - somehow it always got passed over in favour of others. I'm sure you'll get more aerials popping soon with decent humidity. FYI: The last repot was about 2 years ago. The soil was actually just Can-Dry, pumice, and fir bark, and the odd mixed in lava here and there, so what you've used is not too far off, proportionally and compositionally.

I've grown many Moreton Bay Fig as plants and as bonsai since the 1980s. The challenges are twig dieback and leaf size reduction. Otherwise, it's a truly glorious tree to grow! Thank you for including them in your presentations, Nigel 😊

I have a lot of Moreton Bay fig Bonsai, some are suckers from my main 70 plus years old Moreton bay Bonsai which was my grandmothers originally, I made bonsai from the suckers a few years ago and I’m they are very due for repotting. I did prune them so will wait a while Bree I repot them , I have a lot to learn about pruning correctly and I enjoy watching your videos. I live in Australia.😊

I'm in Melbourne and the Moreton bay fig is quite a common park tree around the city, many of them are as big and as impressive as the ones up north. They can easily go down to 0c for short periods of time they just don't like frost. Very hardy and resistant species.

Hi Nigel, I have several MB figs being from Australia and they are wonderful bonsai material. Large leaves but they do reduce in size quite easily. If you ever get the opportunity to obtain a Port Jackson fig (Ficis Rubiginosa) also from OZ, grab it. They have smaller leaves and are incredibly robust and forgiving to pruning and root work. Great aerial roots and they bud back from hard pruning even when leaving no leaves on the branch. I pruned on a couple of weeks ago and chpped all the branches back to nothing and there are buds on every branch I cut. Good luck with your MB fig I'm sure it will thrive in the Bonsai Zone. I don't comment very often but I do watch every one of your videos (and like them). Cheers mate and have a Merry Christmas.

How do you tell the difference between those species? I only checked some pictures online and the rubiginosa looks very similar to the macrophylla. Last year I picked up seeds from the moreton bay fig in Reggio Calabria, Italy. They have some very impressive trees there. I managed to germinate them and they seem to do well although it's winter right now. It's very difficult to get those plants here. If you are lucky you can get the seeds but it's almost impossible to buy plants like that in Europe. I grew ficus religiosa from seed 10 years ago but I never saw plants for sale anywhere.

Hi Nigel, of course this was the first root pruning so it was more about getting the right set up for all the years to come. Will you try the "long root" method you tried on your other ficus to create the vertical growing roots here as well? If I remember correctly you only set up one ficus to grow the roots like that and I'd just love to see more of that! :)
