Wow! I've never heard anyone else say that about not being able to follow fight scenes and just kind of skimming over until someone gets injured or dies lol. I feel way less alone now 😂 I thought it was just me

Looking forward to picking up Priory of the Orange Tree! I love when people describe why they didn't like a book and it makes me want to read it. A lot of the things you didn't like really appeal to me, so I think it might be a book for me. Thanks for the review!

I majored in environmental studies in college and I took one class specifically on climate change. My professors whole theme was teaching us the facts while trying to keep us hopeful for the future still so I’m definitely intrigued to read the uninhabitable earth this year! Now I’m always looking for resources that aren’t meant to terrify rather than teach. Excited to see your cc video!

I'm out of my reading slump after I got onto good reads recently and I'm loving it. Im literally finishing a book a day and it's so much fun. I also want to read the poppy war ever since you talked about it.

I really appreciate when you go into detail about why you liked or disliked a book. I obviously like and dislike books but I realized I don't often really dive into the reasons WHY. Hearing you articulate specific reasons I think is going to help me do the same for my own reading.

Haha you sound SO Dutch! That accent is so recognizable. Can't believe you didn't love the Priory. I was absolutely blown away by that book and consumed it in a weekend. I barely noticed time passing.

I loved your discussion on The Courage to be Disliked! As someone researching neurophysiology, it was so fun listening to your thoughts on psych and philosophy. We should do a buddy read on some other neurobiology, psychology, or philosophy book :)

The thing about the main three theorists is that they were the first three that made theories that connect, make sense and almost all-encompassing. Most, if not all, theories that come after are based on at least one of the three. There have been major agreements and disagreements on their views. Psychology is such a complex topic. I personally think we would never fully understand it ever. Freud, Jung and Adler opened the doors to understanding personality and the changes we go through in life. In the end, we were taught that not one theory is superior than others. It is up to the practitioner to use what theories and methods they believe will work for them and for their patient. I agree with what you said that there's no the one book to live your life to. There are tons of books out there that when compared, are sometimes complete opposites from each other, but we can all learn a thing or two from.

I gave 3 stars to "The courage to be disliked" because it wasn't the book for me but it was a good book. I actually kept on sending different quotes to my friends, because I felt like they needed to hear/read that xD I'm so subtle. So it definitely starts conversations and makes us think a lot. But the title IS a bit misleading. My issue with Priory was the fact that it was a standalone, which is actually the reason why I was so excited about reading it. I felt like there was too much going on and some parts of it were really well explained, while others weren't as clear. At least for me. And I feel like it was because the author wanted to include too much in just one book. I do want to reread it in the future and I'll probably enjoy more.

I’m reading the stone sky right now and loving it a lot I see this a 5 out of 5 stars 😀 the pritory and the orange tree I gave a 4 out of 5 stars on goodreads I liked it too and the poppy war was a great read too sending love to your channel I like your content and channel a lot

I read Man’s Search for Meaning a few months ago. It was hard to read about all that he went through. His theory about finding meaning in your life is simple, but amplified through his personal story. I will add The Courage to Be Disliked to my Want to Read pile.

You see a lot of that Adlerian approach in some economic theories too. When critiquing that old 'winner takes all, competitive' approach with a more cooperative perspective that can actually increase overall results. Moving beyond praise is interesting. I think it's okay if you properly divorce being good at sports or being smart from being a better person or worth more. But that kind of proves his point when you see so many people, younger particularly, having problems when they aren't good at those things. It doesn't help when your livelihood and survival is basically tied up into being better at things though. Self-actualization can be hard when the way we have to live reinforces faulty logic. There are about a million different avenues this conversation could go lol. Thank you for the video!

The courage to be disliked sounds interesting ... I’ve never approached psychology or philosophy books with a desire to like them but more with a desire to understand the similarities and differences with many theories. Like I doubt many people read Freud and subscribe to all of his beliefs lol. But there is usually something, Albiet something small, that I can get from psychology and philosophy books so it was interesting to hear what you learned

I kinda actually liked that the poppy tree had simplistic writing (it's debut novel so it's expected) bc that's what makes it more accessible to a wider audience unlike other very wordy purple prose adult fantasy books

I am reading Dragon Republic now and it is a lot more focused on politics so far, but there's more character development as well, and I am enjoying it so far. I almost didn't start because I was not a big fan of Poppy War, but the second book is better for me so far.

A note on praise: I'd argue that in order to attach value/significance to any act or achievement one is still dependent on others most of the time. What one values is still culturally informed and shaped by one's interactions with society in general, whether this is through personal relationships or the consumption of media. There is no innate natural value one can attach to acts or achievements from within a hypothetical vacuum, completely removed from all human contact. One's own ability to attach value to things requires an inter-personal cultural backdrop.

IIRC, the child who plays piano for reward gradually will cease playing except when there is a reasonable expectation of reward. Also, humans don't respond well to punishment. They tend to resent it and often become stubborn in their refusal to learn/adapt/change.

Having read neither "Courage to be Disliked" specifically nor Adler in general, adding something to this discussion is a challenge. Essentially, everyone can benefit from competent mental health therapy, but some more than others. Good doctors distinguish between patients who need help getting past trauma and those who process trauma slower than normal. It is most important to avoid the Dr. Frankensteins, who poke around and rewire people that would have healed themselves in a year or two.
