This is the most important Maintenance on any Toyota hybrid! A Toyota master diagnostic technician shows you step by step how to replace the newest Toyota Sienna Hybrid battery fan filters.
Starting off my first videos on the awesome Toyota Sienna Hybrid. A much requested video from my awesome viewers is how to service the high voltage hybrid battery filters on your Toyota sienna Hybrid!
This is a very simple process that I encourage everyone to do themselves even if you are not mechanically inclined! And not only will you save money doing this, It will prolong the life of your expensive hybrid battery.

@@KenMF23 I have counseled/suggested/bullied/pushed/pestered 4 friends into Toyota Hybrids and each one is very grateful I did. I think the new Sienna is amazing with its capable performance, AWD traction, good tow rating and OUTSTANDING mpg. BTW two years ago in the Alex on Autos Comment section, I predicted the next Sienna would be all Hybrid and, for once, I was right!

Thanks. so simple and so important. I have a gen 3 Prius and went to Toyota and bought a filter for the battery fan vent. It is NOT stock with the cars. There is a vent grill but NO filter. When I ordered it (they didn’t have any ). But I made them look it up and “oh yes, there is one and it’s $14.95 (if I remember correctly). And after 10 second installation job, I am now protecting my 2011 Prius fan system. So simple, so cheap. And the dealers don’t even know about them. THANKS.

It is rather disturbing that we are not hearing about the importance of cleaning hybrid battery filters from other sources. I never knew until you told us about them. When I looked at the one in our 2014 Prius I thought, "good - the filter does not have much dirt on the fiber mat." When I watched your video I understood there is no fiber mat - it was a mat of dog hair! You also gave us the number of the external filter that is a snap to clean.

This is super helpful, thank you! I also saw your video on the importance of keeping the battery dry. We live in Florida where we get in/out of the car a lot in the rain. Do you think this vent placement would cause an issue with water getting inside the vent? Or is the filter sufficient enough to stop quick exposure to rain. Hi! Ideally you’d want no water to get in at all. Also clean the filter with vacuum or gently with compressed air

With the hybrid fan filters they always used this color. Agree 100% that a white filter would be better

They are probably made this color to match the carpet color. A white filter on a black carpet will look weird.

Hi! They exit underneath the car. It’s a place that’s not easily accessible as it’s covered by many components and not common to clog or have issues

Hi! Shopvac or gently with compressed air. I would replace it when it starts looking old or if it gets very dirty. I wouldn’t tie it with the cabin filter, replace or clean when it gets dirty

Hi! In hot weather use the AC and keep the fan filter clean if equipped. In cold weather avoid leaving the car outside for a very long time like a month or more without driving at all

Thank you so much for this helpful maintenance tip! I just bought the exact same van two weeks ago! Absolutely love it and I’m getting 43 miles per gallon! And this is not my first Toyota hybrid! Also would you recommend having the first oil change at 5000 miles instead of 10,000 miles? I had a 2020 RAV4 hybrid that I traded in for this van and I did insist that the oil be changed at 5000 miles, and the dealer said well it doesn’t need to be done at 5000 miles but I believe that oil and oil filters are cheap maintenance!

So that is why there is no longer the abilty to walk from rear seats to front passenger, I will dearly miss that feature. Also I will buy this Van they decide to switch to Lithium Ion battery as I don't drive the Van that often. Thanks to your other video informing the idle discharge of the NiMh battery. And I hope they bump up the hp and torque. 0-60 in 10+ seconds is very slow

Another great video, thanks so much! Quick question for you... (2021 Sienna Hybrid AWD) I'm getting a minor squeaking/tapping noise coming from the dash up near the driver side windshield. I hear more of a squeak when going over a bump or when the van weight shifts from back to front on a hard brake, and more of a tapping/clicking noise when making tight turns at low speeds. Any idea what that might be?

HI AMD, very helpful video - I scanned the comments and did not see a discussion on where the exhaust air from the traction battery is vented? I have noticed at times on my 2021 Sienna that some extra heat seems to be coming into the front footwell area, I have reached down and felt the intake grills and can notice air being drawn in so the fans must be fairly active and exhausting somewhere. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Hi! The battery exhausts outside the car. In between the sheet metal of the body externally. Not something that is easily accessible

You are like Scotty Kilmer but your own version of everything Toyota. I am big Toyota fan for reliability and DIY stuff. You save me many money and headache when most things can be wrench by myself. Appreciate this. We are looking at a newer Toyota Sienna but after seeing the monthly payments even with a good down payment, we have to skip for now until maybe next year. We can buy it but not with the crazy monthly payments even with 8k down. Hmm. The leasing seem like a buy for us and take over the car after the lease is over with the lease buyout. Tempting because we are sitting on a 2009 Sienna with the fuel cost, crazy in this van. 17/25 for fuel is enough to take the dive in leasing the van and go with the buyout once the lease is over. What you guys think? Paying 700-800 monthly or lease with 400-500. We can afford both but the monthly of $700-$800 will burden us and have us live frugally. Lol.

Hi! I am not an expert on money advise but this is the advise I hear. If your ultimate plan is to keep the car long, buying it is wise. If you plan to turn in the lease and get a new car every 3 years so you won’t have to deal with any repairs ever and budget everything around a 400-500 monthly payment then lease. You can lease then buy the lease to lower your payments but in the end when all is said and done you actually paid more for the car and you’ll have payments for up to 9 years ( 3 years lease + up to 6 year financed)

If I lived in hot and sometimes dusty Las Vegus or Phoenix I would set my iPhone calinder to remind me to vacuum both Sienna battery filters at three month intervals and replace them yearly.. particulary if I hauled a dog/s around in the car, . I'd go to the Parts Department at a Toyota Dealer and buy 20 of those critical air filters. I would also buy four or five extra cabin filters to be vacuumed and swapped out yearly as the hybrid battery cooling is dependent on the cars air conditioning efficiency. Might as well get some extra engine air filters and swap it out at every other oil change. Why? Probably get 250 to 300,000 miles out that very nice Toyota. Alternative: Take it to the Dealer

Hi Brother! I wish my workplace parking lot is covered and not exposed to the harsh sun down here in Georgia. Is it a good idea to park hybrids under trees? I heard somewhere that leaves, especially from pine trees can mess up the AC compressor. Tree sap can spoil the clear coat, but hybrid batteries are clearly more critical to take care of. Thanks for sharing these tips!

Hi! Trees can damage the appearances of cars but not function. If possible park it in the shade and plan to clean the exterior regularly. But if it’s not possible it will be ok. Maybe crack a window open slightly to let some air circulate

Great videos and info. Question. My to toyota dealer changed my oil on my 21 Venza. They overfilled the crankcase by about a quart. After 3000 I discovered this. They immediately drained out the excess. But, they said no damage would be done. Did this potentially damage my engine? Thanks in advance!

Hi! Likely not the engine itself. Could have some oil in the intake but this engine that you have does have a very good oil separator so oil in the intake would be minimal. If you don’t have any issues with the engine running you’re likely good

I just took my car to Toyota dealership for 20,000 service; the dealership recommended engine air filter and cabin air filter replacement . No mention of hybrid air filter. The only serviceable inside filter that I found in 2013 Toyota Prius C owner's manual is Cabine Air Filter. Is there any other filter I should change to prolong my battery life?

You don't need to remove the back seat. You'll have to remove the clips on the front panel that is below the backseat facing towards, if you know what I mean. It's pretty easy. Press the center of the clip and then grab it and push it out. It's very simple. Any doubt just ask, I have a Yaris as well.

Hi brother. The brakes are ok from my experience. The van is not super fast where you’ll need heavy braking. I don’t have complains on the brakes. The engine noise is true but also true for many hybrids. They rev up and hold like a CVT transmission car. More so on the sienna since it’s big and heavy. I would test drive one and see how you feel about the engine noise level

Thank you AMD...quick question. I'm waiting for my new 2022 Sienna Platinum AWD to arrive, but will be faced with the decision to buy the "Platinum" extended warranty. The dealership spoke that these new Hybrids have so many safety sensors that the Factory Warranty may not cover and I may be liable for the Labor. Do you recommend this? I've watched your video on Extended Warranties and all my friends only have the fully combustion engine model. Are you seeing issues with the new hybrid that you agree that the extended warranty from Toyota is worth it?

We have sienna hybrid ( just like your model) since 4 month, today I went to the dealership for 5000 mile maintenance, they did tire rotation, you think if I ask them, do they change the battery filter too?

Question, on the vans, does the ac compressor go bad if you run it without Freon

Hi! The compressor has a protection in place. If the Freon pressure is low the compressor won’t come on. But theoretically if you run it with Freon you can damage it.

2010 Yaris, A/C blows warm when at a red light and I have it in D, when I put it in N or P , it 's fine. Some a/c place told me I need a new compressor. Freon gauge shows full, what do you think?

Hi! Hmm I don’t see how this could be a compressor. I would have the pressures checked. One thing that was somewhat common in these is the pressure switch

Thanks for the videos. You say in the video there are two fans. Just out of curiosity would you get a code if one the fan for the battery would stop working?

@TheCarCareNut are the Sienna battery fans independent on both sides? Do the two air pathways under the front seats join together in the battery compartment OR is the battery separated into two halves that are cooled separately? If they are separate pathways I could check for individual fan operation with a piece of toilet paper over each intake vent.
