I got filled in by bish on the 49 from llanrumney to town in the eighties. I didnt take it personally as he beat up 3 others guys in the same night. Having said that I honestly believe he is the greatest player wales has ever produced. Met him a few times later in life and he was an absolute pleasure to be around.

Cracking interview. Dai Bish had rugby flowing through his veins. As a sports reporter, I remember interviewing him straight after a game near the end of his career when he was Pooler player-coach. His body was so battered that he could only talk to the Press while stretched out on a table having a full-on massage. His extremely 'colourful' language meant we had to very carefully edit what he said before filing our reports! Looking forward to his warts-and-all book and the second instalment with The Central Club

One of the most gifted players of his generation, however, he could be a nightmare on a Saturday night in Cardiff, on one occasion in the Dog and Duck it kicked off so much that the bouncers were being thrown down the stairs lol, a friend of mine was pissed and stoned on the dancefloor and the scrap started around him, they were nudging him out of the way to punch someone in front of him, when it all calmed down, my mate was the only one left dancing oblivious to it all, not a hair was touched on his head lol.

He was the main man up in Pontypool. He would win the games on his own. Im sure if he had stayed at Cardiff he would have won more caps, They were seen as more fashionable than Pontypool. Good luck with your mental health etc you were a great player

Truly a great player and I played 25 years also and appreciate you think you are teak tough and can handle anything but I lost my lad a few years back and couldn’t talk to anyone and unbeknown to me ended up with a fog behind my eyes I couldn’t shift for 6 months , I eventually got better but didn’t realise it was depression , it has never come back but only because I can talk about it 4 years later. My friend was a blaenavon boy so I used to like to watch pontypool when we were not playing but with bishop ring and the boys they were indeed a great team and worked for each other. But yes Bishop was in my opinion the number 1 scrum half in wales at the time. Nice to see he has come out the other end.

David Bishop in the 80s and 90s in South Wales was a legend and was feared. I grew up in the 80s in the valleys and we all knew who Bishop was and his reputation. Now as a middle aged man a very good friend of mine grew up in Cardiff and is a similar age as Bishop. Bishop was a violent man and was incredibly intimidating. On the rugby pitch his violent behaviour ruined his chances of having an international career with Wales and off the pitch his violent and bullying behaviour affected people’s lives negatively.

I only saw the trailer for this when Hartson said he was overrated as a joke. I had to google him. Not a rugby fan tbh, but then realised who he was . Interesting character for sure. Here is a shout for. guest ....Gerald Cordle. Ex Cardiff Blues and rugby League player.

Great Interview, Bish was a real mixture of unbelievable talent and a hair trigger temper which sometimes worked against him. Its a crying shame he didnt play more for wales because, as he says, he was the best-scrum half in wales at the time.The powers that be just thought he was too much of a handful.

Loved this, remember all the stories about him growing up. I might be wrong but I’m sure he was on a radio show years ago and there was a staunch ex Swansea footballer on there (can’t remember his name). Anyway Bish was able to wind him up for fun, he used to blow a gasket, I’d be in tears listening 😂😂

Great to see Dai doing well and I hope he is keeping healthy . I remember Dai playing ,like it was yesterday ,he was a brilliant player for sure . My own opinion is that ,,It may not be everybodies liking ,but I think it would have been a lot different for mind and body if Bish had turned rugby league as soon as he possibly could . The reason is that he would have been better coached and also would have had a more structured life up North that I think would have better for his situation . I totally agree with his sentiment ,WRU has ruined rugby ,,,I will go further and I would say that they have destroyed a once wonderful national asset ,,Good luck Bish ....!! .

Interesting - Have to agree with Bishop on a couple of points - welsh regional rugby has been dire for many years and needs restructuring ASAP, the WRU has ruined the game here, and Mike Budd was a great player whom should have played for Wales.

I think the interviewer could have done a little more research. For example, he never mentioned about Bishop getting police commendations for helping a police officer who was being attacked by a knife-man or the time he rescued a women from drowning. It would have given more balance and helped viewers get an insight into the real David Bishop (i.e. his heart was in the right place).
@thecentralclub
@thecentralclub Жыл бұрын
Thanks Niu Niu, I’m sure from the interview we know dais heart is in the right place. also the host has done his research but there’s something they do before the start of the interview which is called a run through (Platforms that are respectful do this) where they check if there’s anything they don’t want them to talk about etc etc. the knife one was on there and so was a dozen more stories about Dai bishop and the human he was in and out of sports. You see Dai Bishop is writing a book and if you actually watched the podcast which I don’t think you did hence the message he says when he’s finished it he will come on and open with everything. We can’t wait 🙂 Thanks again Niu Niu🙏

Playing for the great pooler sides of the 80 he never played behind a beaten pack, and used to get a rolls royce ride most games - would have been interesting to see how he would have done if he'd been at another club?
