Am I the only one who thinks that this kind of ruleset facilitates suicidal tactics? Wouldn't it be better to just fence to one point with double elimination in case of a double hit? HEMA is taking the same suicidal route that every weapon based martial art is taking, just because nobody respects the blade as a deadly weapon and hitting is prioritized over defense. Please do the world a favour and don't reinvent Kendo.

Marcus Octavius Very difficult to avoid kamikazee tactics. The Nordic ruleset is usually double equals no points, hit and then afterblow equals points corresponding to what you hit. So if I attack your leg and hit, and you hit my head before I'm out (one tempo), you'll get more points as you scored a better hit. HEMA needs to avoid one ruleset. Different rule sets with lead to different tactics. And every ruleset can be gamed. Olympic fencing also tried to discourage kamikazee tactics but failed. And I I think any ruleset will fail, if there's just one rule set. By using different rule sets for different comps, you need to adapt, and it's more difficult to game. For sure; some matches could just be; first deep hit you win/lose, but that doesn't necessarily eliminate kamikazee tactics. Far from. If I know a double cancels it and first deep hit wins the match; the first opening for a deep hit is what you'll rush in for, even if it means a high risk of either a non deep hit, or a double which will cancel it anyway. If we say a double means match over and no points, yeah then you might see more defensive tactics. But not necessarily; inexperienced will often rush, and kamikazee is difficult to defend against. Continuous fencing in S&B with wrestling where you might stop the match and reset every time; Won a grapple, clearly lethal hit, etc might work, then give points for the hits you saw each do in the meantime. But S&B is difficult to judge. But would be interesting. Anyway, suicidal tactics are difficult to beat, but, far from impossible. You'll get hit a couple of times but still win. And if you look at the types of hits; many kamikazees will hit with cuts that won't end you, or thrusts not in vital areas. Overall; experiment with different rule sets all the time. HEMA is not about who won X tournament. But tournaments provide very good opportunity for development. And since many are ofcourse very competitive; if you can win with different rule sets against different styles, you're a better fighter than one who only can win with one particular rule set. IMO.

@@joachimb9305 Very wise. I do think that if historicity is of interest, it's not a terribly bad idea to allow some degree of kamikaze tactics. I say so because it is indeed difficult in real life to defend versus someone who does not fear for their own safety and only wants to land a hit. I agree that you do need a system that encourages landing hits without a trade though. Ideally you would want a system where a sophisticated and athletic fighter can punish a kamikaze for not being defensive enough after the initial hit. One option might be a priority system where hits to extreme parts of the body such as the crown, forearms, shins, shoulders, etc are considered a lower priority or award fewer points compared to hits to more easily-defended vital areas and to the face. This way a strong fighter can present less-vital targets to the attacker, and if the attacker is not sharp in a fast melee, or lunges too greedily, he will be considered to have lost the round. Another question is how large the grace period should be for a returned hit to be considered a trade. In terms of simulating combat, this one is debatable, because people can have various reactions to receiving a wound, and it is pain, fear, and shock which generally most interrupt someone's ability to continue defending themselves. Then there is the perspective of sport, and creating a system which is practical to judge and score. Ideally, we would like a system which provides equal incentives to hit-and-runs and rapid melee and wrestling exchanges. In practice, it is much more difficult to soundly judge which player should be considered the victor in a rapid melee, because such situations necessarily involve many hits between both fighters at a rapid pace. This is probably a situation where although there may be potential to create good reenactments or simulations, it may not be compatible with a true sport. That said, I suspect that simply adding the priority system to trades can hardly do any harm. A longer grace period requires having a more effective exit strategy, but if the grace period is too long, there must be a system to make sure the defender does not have the option of simply going kamikaze in return to force a trade. Another possibility is allow a tug-of-war system where fighters are allowed to retreat from the circle without losing the round, but doing so shifts the tug of war one point in the opponent's favor. Let us say that the balance starts at neutral. Let us say that if you have disadvantage, you may no longer retreat, but you can reset the balance either by winning a round or if your opponent retreats.

Anyone know what Kyle Griswold is wearing for a jacket? I can find no identifying marks aside from a seam or two. It looks almost like it could be short padded jacket under a sweater belted down. But why?

@RandomAllen
@RandomAllen 7 жыл бұрын
I don't really get why people call it armor, it's just a padded jacket, reinforced fencing mask and gloves, and shin guards. As far as does it hurt...I would assume so because the weapons are steel, even synthetics you can usually feel through the padding. If they were wearing armor, they you wouldn't be able to feel it at all but that's not we want in HEMA because we want the fighters to be safe but we also want it to be made clear that getting hit at all is a very bad thing and with armor, you wouldn't be able to tell if you got hit or not.

So if I understood that last bout correctly, Kime was winning by far, but Griswald hit him too hard causing an injury, and then wins because his opponent can no longer safely fence? Accidents happen, obviously there was no malicious intent, but there needs to be a better system to deal with that, if I was Griswald, I would have conceded the match out of respect.

Griswold won the match on points. The video editing is confusing because it shows the points being awarded to the wrong fighter. Griswold was winning when dealt Kime the last blow to the leg. Kime was limping after the exchange, but his shout indicated his willingness to continue fighting. However, by that point the time had run out.

I would also like to see that. But it's also good to see a ruleset that is more specialized to one area; compare boxing and mixed martial arts. In MMA you need to know the many aspects of unarmed combat, but in boxing the focus is 100% on punches while standing up only. This allows for a single skillset to develop and excel, allowing for displays of ability in an area that may otherwise have been an average display.

It's not really of a priority. For example, there are only a couple techniques for grappling in I.33, and it results in a disarm or throw.
