First year of dividend investing, should be up to average income of £45 a month by end of April. This month added Imperial brands and later in the month adding BATS. Should break £100 a month average income by end of the year. Basing holdings roughly on I-Shares dividend income portfolio but limiting dealing fees by buying big chunks of companies a month, eventually leading to decent diversification.

@mrwood4557. I actually look forward to times like those and always put cash on the sidelines when the market is booming so I can put more into the market when there is panic. Its the old saying be greedy when others are fearful and be fearful when others are greedy. Most of my recent gains have been made from adding reserve funds into BP and Shell during the pandemic and more recently Rolls Royce. The great investor Warren Buffett always has 20 Billion put aside to snap up bargains when they emerge. There will always be market crashes. In the 1970s the FTSE fell 70% during one year. However over the long term e.g. many decades the market tends to go up and beat inflation. Taking a long term view is key.

I don't have any knowledge in that area or the time to deal with agents, tenants, repairs, boilers breaking in the night etc. I still have a full time day job. With shares its basically buy and forget. I know many who have made great profits in property but its not for me at this stage.

Had a dip with miners but they are recovering. Added BlackRock world mining trust this month. Waiting for a little more from Rolls Royce before selling in ISA and moving to SIPP for an extra top up. IAG needs to go up more so I can sell and buy a dividend stock. Croda,Diageo,Bat,Tate and Lyle and Unilever all underwater, don't think I'll add. Lloyds looking better!. Roll on interest rate cuts and we might see a rise.

Hi there Thomas. I have two accounts with NS&I. One is premium bonds and the other is a Direct Saver account both using the same log in details so I can see both on the screen together. Any winnings are automatically added to my Direct Saver account. In the event of a market crash or a company having a particularly bad time then I’ve got reserve funds to jump in. Apparently Buffett always has 20 Billion kept aside for this purpose.

Well done sir, an amazing amount of money as a passive income. News March is a 5 week month on my calculation if you had a minimum wage job your passive income for march is equivalent to 224 hours of work divided by 5 equals 44.8 hours a week. You will have to stop doing overtime, it is a considerable amount of money on top of your own salary. I did well this month also at over 1k in dividend.but you left me standing, it was the 10th month of my investment year, well pleased still my running average total is 1k a month as that is my target for this year is 12k.

A question if I may. When the value of your portfolio exceeds the FSCS of £85K, do you then transfer any amount above this value to another platform in order to safeguard your investments should a bank/platform collapse? In other words is your £450K dividend portfolio invested with one platform or spread across several. Thank you. Also I've subscribed to your channel, keep up the good work. 👍
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Ай бұрын
Thanks for the sub, I really appreciate it. If this was an ordinary bank account then yes I’d spread it across different accounts, however investing platforms are different. My platform is with Barclays Smart Investor and they have to segregate customer assets from their own. Even cash on the platform is automatically moved to a segregated account so that in the event of Barclays going bust they can’t touch your assets. I suspect all platforms in the U.K. have to operate in a similar way by law but I’ve only really got experience of Barclays so it’s definitely worth checking out to make sure. Of course if Barclays were to go bust due to an economic disaster then the stockmarket would tank and the value of my shares might not be worth very much. In the 1970s the U.K. stock market fell 70% in a year. Nothing can really protect you against a crash, there is always risk with investing but over the very long term it tends to do well.

@TheCompoundingInvestor

Only new money going in from your current account counts towards the 20k. You could earn a million pounds in dividends a year and still be able to put 20k a year of new money from your current account

If you have a stocks and shares ISA the dividends remain inside your ISA and you can reinvest in whatever shares you want but there is also an option to have them automatically reinvested into the same companies which paid them.

Great question. If I was starting again I’d use ETFs mainly. They were not mainstream when I started and my platform only allowed me to buy individual U.K. companies. They only changed this policy a couple of years ago. Having did this is still buy individual shares too when I saw bargains but mainly I’d be in ETFs. Most of my recent gains have been from buying large caps suffering a short term setback e.g. Shell, BP during the pandemic and also Rolls Royce more recently. When I can’t see bargains I’ll add to my ETFs. Hope this helps

I’ll leave a link to the complete portfolio below. Next video will be an update of it. I usually do one per quarters. As regards the spreadsheet it’s a very simple one I made up and all I do is record every payment made from current account into platform with the amount and date. I also record the total value of each company I update this monthly. Every dividend received is recorded with amount and date. I like to look at the total dividends paid over the last 12 months divided by 12 to find the average dividends per month. Also I like to calculate the total invested which I think is around 255k and the current value which is 455k That’s about it really, quite a simple spreadsheet. I had already owned Greencoat Wind Energy shortly after they floated in 2013 and did a fair bit of research on them. Dividends were decent and the share prices were stable until 2022 when there has obviously been a significant downturn for them. I'm curious why you've taken the dividend investing approach compared to a passive tracker, for example all into the S&P 500 or MSCI World? The extra growth from those in the past decade would have a much bigger portfolio. You could then have a larger drawdown or invest in dividend stocks to substitute income - interested to hear your thoughts
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor 2 ай бұрын
Its a good question and not the first time its has been asked. We are all wiser in hindsight but if we go back to 2009 when I started, the previous 10 years had been grim. The S&P was down around 33% in that 10 year period and got hit by the dot com collapse and then credit crunch with huge banks like Lemann Brothers going bust. There was real market fear then especially in the US. Also I couldn't invest in any individual overseas stocks on my Barclays platform even if I wanted to. This only changed a mere 2 years ago. There wasn't a wide choice of brokers back then and certainly no commission-free apps. It was £12 a trade back then or £35 on the phone. ETFs were not mainstream back in 2009 and honestly I had not even heard of them until several years into investing. I therefore grew accustomed to buying individual UK companies and just stuck with what I knew. These days however I understand the importance of ETFs and know what they are. Over the last 2 years I've put more than 30k into the S&P500. I hope this helps answer your question as honestly as I can.

@@TheCompoundingInvestor Thank you for the honest reply! If you could start again today with your current knowledge, would you go down the passive ETF route or dividend stock picks? @TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor 2 ай бұрын
If I was starting again today, yes the S&P500 would probably make up my main holding but I don't think I could resist specific bargains in large caps when they come along. Most of my gains over the last couple of years have come from buying more shares in large caps when they suffered a short term crash e.g. Shell, BP and Rolls Royce during the pandemic. I put a total of 11k into RR over the last couple of years and that 11k is now worth nearly 50k. I don't always get it right however. It is more exciting for sure but does carry more risk.

@TheCompoundingInvestor

No set rules, I very rarely sell unless a company is showing a long term down trend over several years and basically going nowhere. As I invest mainly in large cap global giants they have a lower chance of failing. I don't wait for dividends when the market is bearish, you never get the dividend because ex dividend date the price drops on the share. Look at MNG they had a dividend last month of approx 5%, then ex div and 3 days after the share price is down approx 13%. I work on the swing index and the profits equal to the investment of £220000 is a regular £1800 per month. £560 to take out and spend and the remaining to reinvest since the cut in Cap Gain Allowance last year. Lloyds is currently 53.4p but ex div you will be able to buy it again at 46p. ( some time in May )

Firstly I like those companies with economic moats which are virtual monopolies and ones which we all rely on, Big Pharma, Oil, Electricity, Water, Mining, consumer staples, big banks etc. also tend to buy the largest in the sectors which are established and can survive big economic downturns. I like companies which earn a lot of revenue from around the world . Most of the FTSE 100 companies generate most of their revenue from abroad. Dividends of between 3 to 5% are appealing but not as important as it used to be because of recent tax changes. I now have to buy shares which pay lower dividends to keep outside the ISA when I fill it. Rolls Royce, Croda, LSEG and RELX fit this bill and also the S&P500 ETF (IUSA).I like companies which have a good record of growing the dividend and also a share price which shows a long term upward trend.
