How To Build Wealth With Passive Income! - Using Assets To Buy Liabilities

In this video I discuss how to build wealth through buying assets instead of liabilities. From a financial point of view, assets are things which grow in value or generate money e.g. property you rent out or stocks and shares, while liabilities take money from our pockets like expensive cars and holidays. It is still possible however to allow yourself some luxuries in life and a sensible strategy would be to allow your assets to pay for your liabilities for example rental income or share dividends paying for a holiday. In this famous bestselling book, Rich Dad Poor Dad, Robert Kiyosaki points out that the Rich acquire assets and the poor and middle class acquire liabilities that they think are assets. For the last 14 years I’ve been investing in the stock market buying mainly UK large cap FTSE 100 companies which pay reliable dividends. Some people use the dividends as passive income but I reinvest the dividends and allow them to compound over time. I try to invest in companies which have strong balance sheets and who benefit from economic moats. Over the years I have grown my portfolio to around 25 individual companies spanning a range of sectors. To diversify further I also buy index tracking Exchange Traded Funds such as Vanguard’s VHYL which gives me exposure to companies paying high dividends from around the world and Black Rock’s IUSA ETF which gives me exposure to the complete S&P500 index. To protect my investments from tax, I use a stocks and shares ISA. With this tax shelter there is no capital gains tax or dividend tax to pay and you are able to protect up to £20,000 a year. For my emergency fund I use Premium Bonds which is operated by National Savings and Investments. You are able to invest up to a maximum of £50,000 and all your winnings are tax free. Your capital is fully protected by the government. By having an emergency cash reserve, I hopefully never need to sell my shares and can allow them to compound and grow over time to hopefully enable me one day to reach financial independence and have the option of retiring early if I wish to do so.

I am a collector of luxury items which was traditionally deemed as liability but with my experience of collecting haute horology, writing instruments, numismatics bullions and cars. A good profit lurks without paying CGT. I buy liabilities when they reach the lowest depreciating point, I keep them (enjoy it) before they return as appreciating classic and I will dispose it. The car that you showed is a Porsche Carrera GT, that car is gold dust if you bought it new £250k you will sell it for £1.2m minimum in average condition. The term investment in its broader terms includes watches, that 10 years ago was £5k today is going for £30k in very well used conditions. I have a portfolio that includes stocks and shares, I started individual stocks only last year, but have always had ETF / index funds, the sweetest money comes from those liabilities that I bought, some laughable items can bring in good returns than conventional investments. Nice getting your input on this topic and thanks for inspiring me.

Love your videos dude…i proper lol’d at the Carerra GT! 😂 price new back in 2004 £330k, price today £1,330,000…7% increase in value year on year compounding over time. Not all cars are “silly purchases”, some play a very fine line between being an asset or a liability just takes a proper collector or enthusiast to know what to buy.…same goes for art, antiques, watches, etc. It’s possible to enjoy the finer things in life, shower yourself in some luxuries and still reap the benefits of the “asset” increasing in value 👌🏼

I disagree that a car is always a liability. A good car gives the impression of wealth and this impression can lead to others taking you more seriously and increase the likelihood of you making that sale. Also, we need a car to get to and from work. We go to work to obtain wealth which we can use to buy assets. Thoughts?
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
In one sense a car could be seen as a depreciating asset like a useful tool and you are clearly using that tool to obtain great economic benefit despite it most probably losing value as time progresses. Thanks so much for your comment and you raise a good point.

Do you not worry that your broker could go bust and that you could lose over £200K in assets? What’s your end goal with dividends? Oh also do you use the full £20k isa allowance every year or has there been years when u haven’t been able to meet the allowance amount?
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Жыл бұрын
Broker going bust is always at the back of my mind I have to admit. Barclays is a traditional platform and with many years of experience so perhaps more resilient than other newer ones but there are obviously no guarantees in life. They do however ring-fence customer assets (shares and cash) from their own so in the event of disaster they cannot touch customer assets. They also don’t lend out your shares to others which some newer platforms do I’m afraid to say. In terms of end goals for dividends I simply work towards my next target of an extra £100 a month in dividends, not really looking beyond these small steps. If I did have a target I’d love to reach it would be to earn more through dividends each month than the day job but I doubt I’ll achieve that. Apart from that I’m simply enjoying the journey.

It is not about buying an assets over liabilties. Moral of the story is how to get get the less fortunate people and steal their wealth and future and put that in your pockets. I.e. Buy a house and rent it out - the less fortunate cannot afford to buy a house so they will be stuck in that vicious circle while you are rapng them by increasing the rent every year = more money in your pocket when you hit 65years old.

You will be happy to know £50 is on its way to you 💸💸. I switched to OctupsEnergy just now. I wanted to switch a few months ago but worked out more expenses. I am glad I came across this video because I checked again. Now cheaper than EON Next. I cant wait to see you invest your new wealth in more dividend stocks. 😀😀💰💰 Thank you for the content glad you get some money 💰💰💰

Thanks so much Alex, that's awesome! I hope you enjoy your new energy provider. With the £50 I'll now be able to reach new heights of investing greatness 😄. I'll use it wisely. All the best.
