The 3 Credit Card Lessons That I Learned in 2023 | My Year in Review

In this video, I want to review the lessons I’ve learned over the past year to get the best value from credit cards!
It's always a great exercise to reflect on what we’ve learned because there’s always more to learn and room for improvement.
So, let's cover these lessons from events this year so we can all be better prepared to get maximum value from credit cards as we move into 2024.
The first lesson that I learned is that American Express is not for everyone.
American Express has had some changes from this year that are mostly negative, in my opinion, and American Express is becoming a more restrictive issuer, leading you to apply for credit cards in the way that they want you to if you're going to continue to maximize credit card sign-up bonuses.
They're also raising annual fees while adding more coupons to their cards, which are given in semi-annual, quarterly, and monthly credits.
And so, moving into 2024, I believe you have to think critically if an American Express credit card makes sense for you long-term.
The second lesson is understanding that applying for American Express business cards is a great strategy to use while gardening.
Gardening is an essential part of this credit card hobby. However, with American Express business credit cards, you can still garden while getting amazing sign-up bonuses and having no long-term effects on your credit report.
The third lesson that I learned was that your lifestyle will guide you to your best credit card setup.
Even though I had a plan for my credit cards, in the middle of this year, my credit card trajectory changed when I really thought about the best way to get value from my credit cards, and it was great that I was in a position to pivot quickly to get the credit cards that were a better fit for me.
I hope these lessons help you on your credit card journey in 2024!

Number 3: YES!!!! So many people pick cards because they’re popular or because they work on paper (looking at you, Hyatt and Amex Gold). That’s bass ackwards. The credit card rewards are supposed to turbocharge stuff you’d pay for with a debit card.
@TheCreditFrog

For sure! Yeah, I wanted to follow the trend as well, and I think there's some value to listening to people's recommendations, but ultimately, looking inward and auditing how you spend your money is going to guide you to the best credit card setup for you! I 100% agree with your sentiment about credit cards turbocharging purchases you would otherwise put on a credit card!

@@TheCreditFrog On a different note, I got a letter today from Capital One saying that because I don’t put too much spent on my Venture X that they will re-evaluate an adjustment to my current $30k credit limit. I only put around $300 spent per month on this card. I only got this card for access to the Capital One Lounge. Hey Stan, I too am suffering from a bit of the coupon book fatigue. One thing that keeps me from jumping into an eco-system like US Bank's travel portal booking system is just a complete lack of knowledge on their portal/booking process. A review or indepth look at their portal system would be awesome if you'd be allowed to share such information. The other downside is that there is no way to transfer points from, for instance, my Altitude Go card over to the Reserve. Anyways, hope to see more information on your channel and specifically info about US Bank's travel portal, its ease of use, and the pricing as it compares to direct with airlines/hotels etc. Thanks!
@TheCreditFrog
@TheCreditFrog 8 ай бұрын
Hey Joshua! Yeah, I'm also not the biggest fan of travel portals so I totally get where you're coming from. Luckily, US Bank has this system called Real Time Rewards (RTR) where you can still get a 1.5X points boost on redemptions with ANY travel purchase. All you have to do is enroll and every time you make a travel purchase, they'll send you a text message if you have equal or more points available to redeem your points against the travel charge. If you say yes, the charge is reimbursed and reflects in your account the next day - so easy!! This works for airlines, hotels, and car rentals so basically eliminates the need to use a travel portal.

I don't know what Gardening is. I also have 3 Amex Platinum cards but that'll definitely change in the near future. But having $105 in Uber credits in December worked great for me since I don't rent cars when I travel and we took a trip this month I'm thinking about trying for the Ink Card even though my chances are very slim. I did beat 5/24 when I was 13/24 so why not give it a try. Thanks for the Video Stan. It's good to see how all our journeys differ

Love the evaluation and willingness to cancel 5 Cards this year. Like you said, we should always be re-evaluating our Credit Card Setups and if certain Cards just don't make sense, totally fine to cut them loose and instead focus on the Cards & pivoting your setup to Cards that do (US Bank AR in your case!) Like you, I was definitely disappointed with American Express in 2023 & the restrictions with the signup bonuses & incremental credits are a huge 👎🏽. Great video as always Stan!
@TheCreditFrog
@TheCreditFrog 8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much Matt! Haha! Not sure if it was willingness to cancel - I just saw that the annual fees were very high and it was time to downsize! And yeah, pivoting your setup can sometimes be a scary thing because in theory it sounds great, but you don't know how it's going to work out in the end (or if you'll even get the cards you want!). Yeah, I hope Amex is done with the statement credits and annual fee hikes, but we all know that this is not the end, but only the beginning.

@nubianpwr
@nubianpwr 8 ай бұрын
Stan - your critique of Amex has forced me to reflect on the value/money/time coupon book strategies CC companies are now employing. Amex (as you astutely described) has moved towards greater & greater control of the purchasing pattern. I do not like the trend😎 I do not now, nor will I ever equate time with $$. They are not just charging me the higher AFs... they have tacked on a time & distraction tax. I plan to scale back on their products in 2024, excluding their CS Platinum and BBP, everything else is up for re-consideration. The Platinum will survive "solely" because it currently has no real competitor in the luxury international travel space. In 2024, I'll be on the lookout for quality CC products without the added control, time, and coupon distraction taxes. I challenge the industry to produce a "real" Platinum competitor with less couponing. Excellent critique my friend!👍🏾
@TheCreditFrog
@TheCreditFrog 8 ай бұрын
You are so right, Nksoi! Amex is the one having the last laugh tbh because they're taxing us on our time, and then we pay them an annual fee so we have the privilege of having this tax! It's not super obvious on the surface, but when we look deeper at the situation, this is exactly what's happening. I agree though, I hope to get a BBP to anchor my MR points and scale back my MR point earning cards in 2024. I'm still a Marriott loyalist so I still have a use for the Amex Marriott cards, but the good news is that there are an increasing number of issuers that we can choose from that suits us better. Hopefully, a real contender to the Platinum card emerges soon, but I don't anticipate this until at least 2-3 years from now, but Amex may accelerate this timeline depending on how high the annual fee is by then. I appreciate your support as always! 👍

Great learnings Stan! As I've said, you're one of the rare few who take such a deep dive into their own lifestyle to adjust strategy and cards when necessary! This is a question I see a ton, and so would be great to hear your opinion - how can "regular" people continue to qualify for more and more Business cards without getting dinged (or because Amex Business cards are special in they do a soft pull usually)!
@TheCreditFrog
@TheCreditFrog 8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much, Kevin! Yes, I definitely try haha! As for your question, the beauty of Amex business cards is that they usually result in only a soft pull. So there really is no downside to applying for them. Of course, you want to have all your docs if your incorporated so they can be provided, if necessary, or be able to discuss your business with a CS rep if you're a sole prop. Issuers like Chase will hard pull every time you apply so there's some lasting effect on your credit report/credit score. The longer your business has been operating (and bringing in income), the less likely you'll be faced business credit card denials. Hope that answers your question!

I'm loving my USBAR with most purchases earning 3x. My physical catch-all, and hear me out, is the Hilton Surpass. It's not an awful card for food, gas, groceries... but the best part is I'm redeeming certificates at Waldorf Cabo for $1500. That's a 10% return, even on non-category spend. For big spenders you can have multiple cards. When I hit 15k I just swap cards and start earning the next certificate. Just a thought before you canel your Hilton card.
@TheCreditFrog
@TheCreditFrog 8 ай бұрын
Hey Ralph! That's awesome that we have a similar setup with the USBAR capturing most everyday expenses, and then a welcome offer card / benefit card as the catch-all! Your strategy totally makes sense, and that's a great use for the Hilton Surpass card. I think long-term I'll probably keep the Surpass or Business for the $15k FNA. Hopefully the Business doesn't get a quarterly statement credit like the Surpass. At this point though, I plan to cancel the Business so I have an open Amex slot so I can climb the Hilton ladder (never had a personal Hilton card yet). I also want to take into account that I may get a welcome offer AND the $15k spend bonus on a new Hilton Surpass/Business card which is better than just keeping the old one open 👍!

If you had to choose between the Hilton Business Card or Aspire card which would you choose? I’m currently over 5/24. I was thinning about the Chase Business Cash card, but the $6K spend is a little high for me.
@TheCreditFrog
@TheCreditFrog 8 ай бұрын
I would choose Hilton Business. I would get Aspire only if I had Surpass or regular HH first. But I would wait for an elevated Hilton Business welcome offer first. An update to the Hilton Business is imminent and I fully expect one after 1/17/24 when the refreshed personal Hilton offers expire.

Correction at 5:18. Amex treats virtual all plat cards and many non plat cards as one product family. 👎

Stan, do you think the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Ink Business Preferred is a better choice? I own 2 companies? Should I open all 4 Ink cards for each company or is that excessive?
@TheCreditFrog
@TheCreditFrog 8 ай бұрын
As the CSP has no elevated offer now, I would definitely go after Chase Ink Preferred. It has better multipliers, and the welcome offer is way better as long as you can meet the minimum spend requirement. I would go for the CIP first on one company and see how you like it. If you do, you can always get a second CIP for the other company. 200k URs for $16k spend is not too shabby - again as long as that fits in your business's budget. Make sure you're under Chase 5/24 to maximize your chances of approval. I would avoid the Ink Premier card for now, and only focus on the CIU, CIC, and Ink Preferred since the Premier card doesn't let you transfer UR points to other cards (there are some reports that some have had success doing this, but not everyone). If the Premier card fits your business, then that's ok too, but the other cards are better IMO.

I’m curious if or why you didn’t ask for retention offers for some of the year 1 cancels.
@TheCreditFrog
@TheCreditFrog 8 ай бұрын
It's a great question! It's always a balance between value and simplicity. When accepting a retention offer (no matter the value), you have to commit to the card for another 12 months. Personally, I'd be very unhappy if I had to go through another 12 months of monthly statement credits on the Gold/Bus Gold (3 monthly credits per month to deal with). So those cards are canceled because regardless of the offer, I'm valuing simplicity in this scenario.

@@TheCreditFrog gotcha. I agree on the old Biz Gold and the higher fee Biz gold. Also from my experience Biz cards have worse retention offers. Why I cancelled my Biz Plat after year 1. But I got crazy value that first year with a triple dip. I’ll easily take a retention offer on the personal Gold every time.

Stan great video I have a question for you. I was thinking of getting the AMEX Gold business card and so I just wanted to confirm with you if Amex does not do a hard credit pull. I currently don’t have any AMEX cards. Thank you
@TheCreditFrog
@TheCreditFrog 8 ай бұрын
Thanks Enrique! So with business cards, Amex will do a hard pull if you do not currently have at least 1 personal card with them. My recommendation is to get a no annual fee card like the BCE or Everday card (MR) before applying for a business card so you never get a hard pull from Amex again (as long as you are in good financial standing with them).
