Anyone watching Last of Us is only planning their own future hell by watching actors do the events of what happens in the Last of Us 2 game. It's the equivalent of spending several days raising chickens in your backyard while knowing your angry neighbor will release his pitbull and bulldog into your backyard to waste your chickens during a weekend.

I think these problems could be solved by having a moment where Ellie's casual confidence gets shattered somehow--- a close call, her first look at the brutality of human survivors out in no man's land, etc. Essentially, she needs a "scared straight" moment to knock her down a peg and establish the dynamic we see in the game. Joel's "resolution" to the situation could also showcase the fact that he is brutal and downright scary, and seeing him in that light could change the way Ellie behaves around him. It could also remind Joel that there's no reason he should let Ellie walk all over him, and that just because she's a kid doesn't mean she gets a pass to do and say whatever she wants. Honestly, building up their relationship slightly, then shattering it entirely in this way might be the best thing for a long term payoff that builds throughout the series.

Your criticisms of Ellie are spot on and can be explained by the current zeitgeist post the game's release in 2013. Every leading woman in a film or TV show has to be strong and independent. On top of that they are all smart and thus in charge, as they should be according to the current year. Men are stupid and erratic, unless they are black in which case they are heroes and also smart (but not as smart as the women).

They also need to be ugly-- I-- I mean-- uh-- um-- "not conventonally attractive by normalized social metrics". I'm 100% certain that's one major reason they cast Bella Ramsey. HBO probably wanted to go with Maisie Williams since she... kinda... has a proven acting range in an ensemble cast setting, but since she's like 30 now they were like "nah, need a younger chick plus Maisie Williams is kinda cute so definitely not, who else do we have on the short list from our GoT pool?" The intersectionalist crowd really hate fit and attractive people.

Well said, I think this is the main reason it is difficult to connect with show Ellie. If she was more vulnerable and afraid at times it would really help to connect with the character. I think a big problem was the casting was way off for Ellie. I'd much rather of watched the season with the actress that played his daughter in the beginning. They had better chemistry, and she had a far more expressive face. I dunno why on earth they cast the Mormont chick from GOT. While she eventually grew on me a little, I still think they could've picked damn near anyone else and it would've been for the better

I think they got Joel right in 1 scene. I believe it was the 1st episode (I could be wrong), when he was standing on a building corner, waiting for Tess to finish meeting with an informant. A firefly recruiter shows up and does the whole “if you’re lost in the dark…” but then Joel cuts him off and retorts, “if you say ‘look for the light’ I’ll break your jaw”. Holy shit, fantastic video! This sums up my thoughts so far pretty much exactly. You absolutely nailed the character changes to Joel and Ellie to better fit the versions they gave us in part 2, but there's one piece about Ellie I feel you didn't fully address. You mentioned how she's capable, confident, and unflinching to the violence around her, but it's more than that. She's being portrayed as sadistic, likely to make her brutal revenge-fueled massacre across Seattle in season seem more believable. First she seems to find it "cool" when Joel beats that soldier to death, rather than disturbed or at all uncomfortable. In the first game, Ellie would often comment on Joel's brutality both in scripted moments and randomly during combat. And then when she kills the stalker in the basement, she slowly cuts into it with her knife before she puts it down. Neither of these are things Ellie would do in the first game
@muyangcheng3874
@muyangcheng3874 Жыл бұрын
Ellie slowly cuts the forehead to observe how the fungus grow in the zombie's brain, not for some random sadistic pleasure....and given when you commented you've probably seen episode 4 already where Ellie was explicitly shown to hesitate before finally shooting someone to save Joel. The Ellie in the show and the Ellie in the game are both naïve and compassionate, just not in the same way. And I would argue that the show Ellie is not changed to fit part 2 (as a lot of whiners seems to believe so), but to fit the post-apocalyptic world more. The kid literally went to military school surrounded by kids who can't stop talking about resistance and rebellion while, simultaneously, never been outside the wall and never seen a real life-threatening zombie. If anything, the game Ellie is more explicitly naive and compassionate in the "wrong" way, I for one am glad that the show producers decided to change it up instead of following whatever the source material went with, it implies actual thought put into adapting it into actual screenplay.

Eventhough the DLC was a great extension to get to know more about Ellie, I think the fans fell in love with joel and her. So wasting a whole episode in an already short first season with ellie and riley was annoying to say the least. I also didn’t really like that they adjusted joel‘s character to fit the narrative of the second game more. Why fix arguably one of the greatest storylines just to justify the extremely divisive second one… Obviously this is my personal opinion but i don‘t think the show was executed anywhere as well as it could have been.

Some issues here. Joel wasn’t a former soldier and he also seems very skilled with guns. I don’t think hitting a charging superhuman fungus beast that wants to tear you apart limb from limb is going to be a clean shot, and him “losing control” is a great way for them imo, to humanize him and add some layers of severe PTSD to his character. In real life people aren’t killing machines like video game pro tags and him having knee pain, PTSD and signs of aging is a great way to add more layers of depth to him that aren’t easy to pull of with the constraints of games. As for him meandering through scenes as you put it, I don’t really see how. He’s terrified of connecting with anyone else after the losses he’s been dealt and he seems genuinely unable to relate to other people in any way which makes him seem even more emotionally broken. All valid complaints I suppose but I disagree

I think moments like that will still work. In fact, it was mentioned that they wanted Ellie’s personality a tad more harsh in order to make the contrast between her and Sarah more stark (notice that Sarah was depicted as VERY gentle, kind and almost a little ethereal). I would think this heightens moment’s like ‘I sure as hell ain’t your dad’… and then heightens the impact when they develop this relationship as it’s DESPITE her differences, and more authentic in some ways because she’s not a 1:1 Sarah substitute. He grows to lover her in a fatherly way despite her being a very different person. This approach was confirmed per Druckman, btw

Neil Druckmann wasn't the lead director of the original The Last Of Us game. It was actually Bruce Straley who left Naughty Dog in 2017. Hence we got the polarizing version of Part 2 of the game that we did. And now it isnt that surprising that the show is continuing more of the same flavour that we got in second game. RIP OG Joel and Ellie😥

One thing this show finally did right: They hired a showrunner (Craig Mazin) who actually loved the game and since playing it wanted to bring this story to television. This is immediately apparent by the care and respect in which the show is put together. There just might be one problem: I think Craig Mazin misunderstood Ellie or accidentally projected the twisted version of her from the 2nd game into the 1st game. In the official podcast for episode 3, he described Ellie as sadistic and a troublemaker, which explains some scenes (like the joyfull killing of the trapped infected guy or the admiring look while Joel kills the FEDRA soldier - while Ellie in the game was horrified in this scene). But "sadistic" is absolutely not how I got to know Ellie in the 1st game, so I am quite worried what they will do to her character. I don't even think that Craig Mazin is screwing this up intentionally, because he got everything else so right and he really seems to care, so it's a real shame that he seems to misunderstand one of the main characters so much.

This is weird. I didn't get "sadistic/troublemaker" vibes from Ellie at all. Not even in part 2. Yeah she killed a ton of people but she was blind by revenge. I’ve discovered over the years that most shows follow the same format: the first couple episodes they try to give people what they think people want. The next couple episodes they start to work in a little bit of what they want to desensitize and prep the viewers for episode 5 without scaring them off. Then around episode 5 you start to see the story/messages/values of the writers. They figure that by then the viewer has already invested so much time into the show that they will tolerate crap that would have them turn it off if it was in episode 1. Now, that breakdown was made when most shows were 13 episodes, so the timeline may be a bit accelerated now. But I would bet those cracks you’re seeing is the writers preparing you to transition from watching the story you wanted to see to watching the story they want to tell.

I think that despite the points being made by the drinker being accurate at the time it turns out that it was kinda nessisary for the pay off. Bella Ramsey plays a more realistic version of Ellie. Her cocky, eager and arrogant nature was just a facade to hide how powerless and scared she is which is most evident in episode 6 where she says she can't do this without Joel and her eagerness towards violence is also key as after killing David she realises that there's nothing cool about murder. There's just destruction. Also Bella Ramsey now plays the more optimistic Ellie after episode 3 which is an improvement. The only real criticism is that the show lacks action. In the Kansas section and David section they could've had more action.

In the game Ellie was told at the outset to do whatever Joel told her, and she did up until he was in danger and she provided assistance. This became a big area of development for both characters as he later learned to give her more leeway to be more than a burden and she learned that the more direct her participation, the closer she was to the danger. It wasn't self-reliance but mutual trust they each leaned to give into and both benefited from in the story. It sounds like this misses that point, which made up for a good portion of the game's initial relationship between them. It's a gaping hole in character development that sounds like it didn't have to be missed out on.

I like that they got Marlene’s voice actress to play her on the show. It’s uncanny how much she looks like the character. Having only just found "TCD" I am absolutely delighted to find someone whose frank, accurate and beautifully grumpy reviews are always bang on the money. My only question for you is this.... How did you not want to destroy the actor who plays the character of Kathleen with the psychotic hatred of Henry? Surely one of the worst portrayals of a good person turned bad ever made.

I don't know, she always seemed evil to me, it was her brother that was the good one and who kept her in check, but since he's gone and she's the next one in the chain of command, then she gets all that power and no one to stop her from squandering it on something so fruitless and stupid like putting all the blame on a man and his mute deaf brother and hunting them down instead of dealing with the actual imminent threat.
@tlf2818
@tlf2818 Жыл бұрын
@@justanothergopnik1853 She has more depth than that, in my opinion. I see her as a broken person who lost her only connection to reality; her brother. You can see from her discourse that she heavily suffered seeing her people oppressed by Fedra. On both occasions where she is talking to collaborators, she mentions how her people were tortured and killed, not only er brother. She genuinely felt that, to the point of not being capable of feeling anymore (something that almost happened to Joel). When she asks Henry if Sam is worth everything, it's a very honest and loaded question: she actually means everything. In her perspective, Henry deprived everyone, not just her, of Michael. He took away from her people someone who would guide them to freedom and wellbeing. To keep Sam alive, Henry jeopardized years of a more pacific revolution that could have resulted in a much better situation for her whole people. Henry doomed everybody of a more fruitful, healthy outcoming. Michael was the man with the kindness, integrity, morality, and (in her eyes) a world without him has lost all reasons for these virtues to exist. Of course, she IS a lunatic and a very bad leader. I'm not denying that. I just think she has more layers than that.

I remember Ellie in-game has different idle animation,when she was first handed to Tess&Joel, Ellie's body language was timid-shaky-afraid (distrusting perhaps?), and her dialogues also has those vibes. As the game progresses, Ellie saved Joel, got her gun, and her dialogue became progressively calmer, same with her body language/idle animation animation. Meanwhile, the film's interpretation was just 'abrasive'. I'd personally cast Dafne Keen (X-23 from Logan), as she managed to convey a wider range of expression throughout the movie, but that's just my opinion.
@doggodproductions2259
@doggodproductions2259 Жыл бұрын
Dafne would have been WAY better as a pick for Ellie, she could definitely add some of the same depth to facial expressions and she's just a killer actress, but shes not young enough to play Ellie anymore (i think shes either 18 or 20). Everything Bella does feels way too forced and I'll just never buy that she's the same character. She just can't hold the screen in the way she needs to. The actress that played Joel's daughter would have probably been a better pick for Ellie honestly, she has way more charisma than Bella does.
@caimanaraujo479

You are remembering wrong. She was always asking questions, always making sure she was heard, and always trying to prove herself useful. She asked A LOT of questions before tess died, she fought a lot for joel to give her a gun on bill's town, she was absolutely antagonistic against bill, always showing sarcasm and rudeness and not shuting up when joel asked, so much so he just gave up right about the middle of that part. On the car she poked fun out of joel just like sarah would have done, she clearly wanted him to help the hunter faking injury, she was really agressive against the hunters, and got really mad when joel scolded her for saving his life.
@shanetaylor761
@shanetaylor761 Жыл бұрын
I don't think you can blame the actress because it seems obvious to me that that's how the director wanted the scenes to play out. It's not as though she's incapable of playing subtle. I thought she did that well with her scenes trying to explain to Joel the tess wasn't her fault. Also the scene when she saw the dead bodies. Also i think you're seeing the game with rose colored glasses. Yeah she was more reserved meeting them first in the game but she started asking 100 questions and quipping away ellie style really quick into meeting them. I mean she instantly was fighting with Bill when they first meet. I think it's too early to judge character development when the characters haven't had time to develop. I rather they stick to some small aspects of characterization from the game too but I do think there's other ways they've improved in the foreshadowing. It's not exactly inept to focus on both ellie not trusting Joel and being naive. The classic time tested play will be she gets in over her head and finally realizes she's not invincible. Then Joel saves her. Boom two birds with one stone she matures and she begins to trust Joel. Writing her a little less apprehensive isn't going to do any thing to sabotage the narrative.

It really sucks that they took away interaction between Joel, Ellie, and Bill. That whole section of the game brings Joel and Ellie closer because of Bill’s eccentricity and it teaches Ellie respect for what is out in the world that’s so new to her. They could have kept in backstory and still kept in stuff from the game. Like, cut the running and eating strawberries part and replace that with JOEL AND ELLIE WITH BILL. Bill surviving would make us empathize deeper with Bill and really deliver on how destitute the TLOU world is.

Recreated scenes don’t translate to faithfulness Joel: changed from a gun runner to a battery runner, doesn’t hunt down and break Robert’s leg before torturing him for answers and instead just finds him dead, isn’t a twisted man who instead gets angry at Tess after finding out she’s infected but instead a defeated man who is cold to the fact Tess: no longer kills the men who Robert hired to jump her but instead works out the misunderstanding and is let go, isn’t the ruthless and respected criminal that had abandoned hope until seeing Ellie’s mark and pleading to Joel that there’s enough between them that he has to feel obligated to get Ellie to his brother, that is before she then refuses to become an infected and stands her ground against the militia that ultimately shoot her down Infected: no longer any spores, now share a hive mind, no longer cry or contribute to Tess’ story about how the people might still be alive but not in control Ellie: no longer an emotionally vulnerable kid being traded around and defensive of those she cares about, now an overconfident and constantly snarky girl Marlene: no longer is she the only firefly to survive the ambush but she also doesn’t know Ellie this time around after having been a friend of her mother and seen her grow up, to the degree where she has to chain her, but instead captured Ellie after she was found with the bite mark Bill: no longer the bitter, controlling man who begrudgingly helps Joel out after being indebted to him and feels betrayed by Frank running off Frank: no longer revealed to have come to hate bill and feel suffocated, trying to escape and instead getting bitten and then deciding to hang himself No longer are Joel and Tess gun runners, no longer do the militia pursue them to the capitol building, no longer does Tess beg of Joel to take Ellie to Tommy (having been a firefly) and instead to just take her as far as bill (because apparently bill would care), no longer does Joel immediately tell Ellie upon Tess’ death to stay silent and do everything he says when he says it (instead he now does this days into their journey), no longer can Ellie reveal her immunity through openly breathing spores as that concept has been excised altogether and no longer is Ellie remotely comparable to Sarah which is the whole point and neither is the story told through Joel’s pov and instead he’s just one of many - all these decisions snowballing into greater problems down the line The only reason for people to think that it’s being faithful at all is that they only have a superficial recollection of events and can’t immediately see the changes to not only the story but the characters

Tbh Tess couldn’t receive a lot of growth or impact from the game because of how short we spent time with her. 9:40 How has no one talked about the whole "I dissect cats for fun" moment in the basement when she just... cuts... the infected for no reason just to see it bleed before she knifes it? All this not too long after asking Joel if he feels remorse killing infected knowing that they used to be people. Show Ellie is an obnoxious and creepy character with random bouts of silliness that feel out of place. She doesn't take anything happening seriously until people are literally dying. Hell, when she watched Joel beat a man to death right in front of her, a scene that shocked and appalled game Ellie, she looked... fascinated and joyful? The portrayal of her character is the only thing actually holding this show back from being great. In the game you, the player, developed paternal (or maternal) protectiveness over the character because she was so damn endearing. If she'd been like Bella Ramsey's portrayal this game would have gone down as "fun but flawed."

Ellie's reaction to hostile humans (which she isn't accustomed to, unlike zombies) will determine if the character can show vulnerability and not be "perfect". I really hope they try to make Abby likable for season 2 or when Part 2 will be adapted. Instead of just having her jump in and kill Joel and then force us to see what kind of person she was like before then as some excuse to get us to care, I'd rather they meet and build a close connection, a relationship, until she ultimately finds out that Joel is the one who killed her father, leaving her with conflicted emotions, a sense of betrayal, and unsure of what to do: Take revenge or get more answers. An alternative would be that instead of killing Joel, she ends up beating him into a coma, only barely rescued by Tommy and other members from the scouting party. While he's in recovery and comatose, Ellie goes to chase down Abby for answers. She ultimately attempts to reason with members of Abby's group in order to get close to her, but when they refuse and attack her, she resorts to killing as many of them as possible to get to her as soon as she can, doing much of what she did in the game in the process. Once she finally reaches Abby, she ultimately realizes she still plans to kill Joel in retaliation. After a last conflict, Ellie manages to kill Abby. By the time she gets back to Jackson, Joel has regained consciousness and asks Ellie if she's okay and what happened. Ellie lies and tells Joel that Abby and her group won't be coming back, and swears. Joel, much like Ellie at the end of Part 1, knows she's lying, but accepts her swear. For the alternative, instead of Joel's actions being done out of selfishness as Part 2 says, rather than it being an impossible choice as Part 1 depicts, Joel's actions remain grey, and while the conflict between him and Ellie still happens, he has the evidence showing that they've already done tests on others with no success, meaning she would've been another failed test subject. Regardless, she's left with conflicting emotions and some unwillingness to come to terms with such a realization. After she kills Abby, she realizes what Joel had to do, and while she doesn't completely forgive him, she still comes to terms with it and accepts it.

At this point in the game I was already endeared to her, but I don’t really feel the same in show and it absolutely has everything to do with her writing. She 180s between hostile and chipper inquisitiveness it’s like whiplash sometimes and doesn’t feel natural. I also get the sense from a few of her scenes that they’re definitely trying to set her up for the narrative in part 2, which is messing with the impression you get of her present character.

"Retroactively trying to validate Neil Druckmann's choices." This is what I was worried about. Think back to how hard he doubled down on being right with the second game, and how we were all just too stupid to get it. When I heard he was involved with the show, I was worried. What a shame.

I'm no expert in facial expressions or body language, but in case of bella ramsey, you just dont see a lot of activity in her eyebrows and temple, which are some of main markers of pain, sadness and anger. I mean its as simple as the inside edges of the eyebrows raising to show sadness. If you look at her face through the hard hitting scenes, theres hardly, if any activity in the upper part of her face. even when sam dies and henry kills himself(especially here), you hear the horror in her voice but cant see it on her face.

I got attacked online for expressing disappointment in the 3rd episode. I love The Last Of Us, it's possibly my favourite game of all time. A game where the gameplay is nothing compared to the storylines. My favourite section is the battery/school. To me, it is huge for the plot development, but the writers of the show thought otherwise, and labelled Bill's section a massive plot hole. I loved the section due to the bickering between Bill and Ellie, Bill's portentous words to Joel, Bill's caustic lines, Joel trying to keep the bickering pair apart, Joel growing to realise Ellie is more than she seems, the setting of the town and the school, the twist of the battery missing, the gymnasium scene, stumbling by luck on the battery that Frank stole and the Frank reveal. It is the best bit of the game for me. I voiced this and was attacked, had my intelligence questioned and was mocked. All because the bit I looked forward to being recreated the most was ignored and removed. I was buzzing about Offerman being cast, and he did do a good job - they both did - it just wasn't what I'd hoped for. Apparently, that means I must be stupid.

That *was* some of the best stuff from the game. The characters were all written really strong in that whole segment. Lots of tension, character development, action, and humor. Not to mention the intrigue Bill brought to the screen in the game. The slow reveal that he was gay in the game was brilliantly understated as well. I still thought Ep3 was really well done, but I too missed the fun and character building moments that they cut out of that part. It sounds like the biggest reason is for cutting out action set pieces. They wanted to cut a lot of action for the show adaptation.

While I do understand the let down of not getting what you expect (I felt this a lot in season 3 of Atlanta), I also appreciate what they did. For me the game and this episode tell a similar story in that they both have the same message, but from two different perspectives. I feel like the game says "if you close yourself off from everyone and everything, you'll end up like Bill, hateful and alone" while the show said "If you open yourself up to loving again, you can actually have a nice life, even if the world is fucked". At the end of the day, I get the part that people wanted Ellie and Bill to interact and so on, but also. In the game Bill isn't a huge part of it (really... he's not), so I don't really see how this change massively effects the overall story other than just wanting something more true to the game. A critique I had myself was the pacing. I felt the episode could easily have been shorter and/or focused a bit more on Joel and Ellie if to show contrast or similarities between the "couples" so to speak.

Eeeh, I don't know if I quite agree all the way. To me, it seems more like Ellie is trying to project herself as confident and brave to hide her fear and insecurity rather than actually being brave and confident. When she leads the conversations with Joel, it's less that Joel is being passive, and more that Joel doesn't want to talk in the first place and Ellie is going out of her way to try to get him to open up. Maybe I'm just biased in its favor because of the game, but I still have hope for the show

@SidVirtuous

In what way did they make Ellie the dominant one though? You have to substantiate because from what I've seen, Joel has been the one calling the shots, getting them out of sticky situations, and is constantly talking down to Ellie just like in the game. Like when Tess says she's staying and Ellie doesn't want to leave her, Joel grabs her and they take off. He maneuvered around clickers and he and Tess got them through that museum while Ellie was just watching. He killed that military guard when shit hit the fan. Dude is risking a ton for this operation while Ellie is just dead weight and actually almost cost them a couple of times(stepping on that dead body on the stairs, gasping at the clicker). Honestly, they make Ellie seem super helpless at times, which drives me crazy because she grew up in a world where survival is key, she seemed way more competent in the game.
