In this episode of VIP Lounge, I had a few beers and a chat with Russell Crowe about his life and career, some of his biggest and most memorable roles, and his upcoming supernatural horror The Pope's Exorcist.

Damn, took the words right outta my mouth. Russell should get together with Christian Bale, Henry Cavill, Daniel Day-Lewis, Bill Murray, Ed Norton and Wesley Snipes and form the LOSWADOS (League Of Stars Who Are Difficult On Set). Motto: "You Must Have Skin This Thick To Enjoy This Ride". To chair their annual meetings, they could dig up John Huston's mouldering corpse and prop him at the head of the table, with a stiff drink in his bony fingers and a lit cigar between his teeth.

Also, the chemistry between Gosling and Crowe was perfect and the combative nature of their partnership really added to the comic element. I think it's done on purpose. If they tried to do the normal hollywood kind of press campaign with this movie it would flop hard, instead they are going a different way. Personal interviews with people that actually carry a modicum of respect in the industry, no woke crap, no accusing the audience of being racist if they don't watch the movie...just a good heart to heart chat. It's a sad sign of the world we live in when we consider two blokes having a nerd out over movies as a groundbreaking form of marketing.

@@jotun.616 For its time Virtuosity was great. Sure it had all kinds of plot and writing problems, but it was still an awesome movie. And yeah, if you take two acting legends with a ridiculous number of amazing movies under their belts, and consider Virtuosity was the first movie Crowe was in, and one of the earliest movies Denzel had a lead role in, of course it doesn't stack up all that well. In any case, thanks for the response.

I raved about them to anyone who’d listen. The writing was superb, it literally transported me to that time. It reminded me of Tolkien, the level of detail was amazing and the style was very 1800. I learned what an Orlop was! The humour was brilliant, clever. I remember Maturin trying coca leaves to replace his laudanum habit and falling down the stairs in Stockholm when he got a great batch of heroin! I might go back and read them again, they are superb.

If any of you like reading, try the original novels that the movie was based on. Patrick O'Brian is the author. There are 20 in total. All of them with a nice blend of storytelling and military detail that is particular to the Napoleonic wars. The movie was based loosely on the 10th novel 'Far Side of the World'. If you like Bernard Cornwall's Sharpe books or C.S.Forester's Hornblower books, you'll like these .

Russel Crowe is up there, in my book, of great movie hero's with Kurt Russel and dare I say John Wayne? Well the duke is in class by himself for me. I have to say. Love Russell Crowe, I own 11 of his movies ! my video library is only about 1k on digital, but I still have another 800 or so on vhs(can't play 'em though ) and dvd's. I've watched oh , maybe another 2k more over my 5 decades. Love the movies.

Master and Commander is one of the best films ever made. Can watch it whenever it’s on, watch with your dad or friends, it’s just a classic. Perfect film, wish they’d made a trilogy at least.

The Aubrey-Maturin novels really need a whole HBO series treatment. There are too many wonderful stories to cover in a few films.

I think the original plan was to do a trilogy, but the first one wasn't as big of a success as they had hoped.

The movie just has a bad timing to be released at the same day with LoTR: Two Tower.. I guarantee if it released at any other time, it’ll be considered as box office classics

I knew Russel when he had a nightclub in Auckland New Zealand, early twenties we would have been, he was a charismatic guy even then but you could tell he was a man on a mission. A few years later i moved to Australia and hadn't heard anything of him and then the movie Romper Stomper came out. I was blown away by his performance as a racist skinhead whose narcissism eventually consumes himself and most of the people around him, its pretty grim viewing but a must watch.

Russel Crowe hates the press. There's interviews with him out there staring daggers at interviewers asking him dumbass questions about his personal issues instead of his projects or the craft.

Somewhere I read about a director doing casting, who felt so bad for all the really talented actors she had to turn away. She couldn't cast them all! There's a lot of talent out there.

I was thinking that. This was so much more relaxed and it allowed Russel to really shine and talk about the things that were important to him. Drinker got to approach it as a fan, who knew and appreciated his work and his talent. This made for one of the most enjoyable interviews I've watched and it reminded me why I'm a fan of both Russel and the Drinker.

Master and Commander stands as one of the best Naval action/adventure films ever made. The script is brilliant, the actors are perfectly cast and deliver brilliantly, the direction as good as it gets, editing and action sequences done to perfection. I own the disc and rewatch it regularly. Same with Cinderella Man. If my wife and I are able to sit down together and watch a film and still be talking about it days later then it has to meet a very high bar. Loved it.
